Power Rankings Based on 2-3 played games.
Will be updated as teams play:
1. Russia
2-1-0-0 8 points.
After two tough games versus main group opponents, Russia cashed in 5 points. In the last game against Belarus, the Russians coasted and still collected the win. Unless Russia collapses in the game vs Slovakia, they should finish first in their group.
2. Sweden
2-0-0-0 6 points.
Swedes had no issues with the Swiss, but lost their best player. In the game against the USA, they were outplayed, but thanks to solid goaltending, they came out victorious. With an expected win over Denmark tomorrow, Sweden will clinch the group.
3. USA
1-0-1-0 3 points.
USA had the toughest schedule of all teams. They had to open the tournament playing their northern neighbors: in a tough game, Americans finished with 3 points in their pockets. The second test came with another powerhouse, Sweden. Americans outplayed the opponents, but were unlucky and failed to convert their chances which resulted in a loss. Nevertheless, the USA led by Matthews looks like one of the best teams of the tournament
4. Finland
1-0-1-0 3 points
The hosts had no problems with the Belorussians in their opener. The second game against another Russian speaking team Suomi started very strong and dominated for 30 minutes. Then, something happened and they allowed 4 goals in 8 minutes essentially losing the game.
5. Canada
1-1-1-0 5 points.
Canadians lost their first game to their North American rivals. Then they had troubles with Danes who gave them a fair challenge for a half of the game. Finally, today Canada was unable to defeat Switzerland in regulation time. Unless more upsets are to come, Canada will finish third and likely meet the hosts in the quarterfinal game.
6. Czech Republic
1-0-0-1 4 points
Czechs are my 'dark horse' team this year. They played an even game against Russia and only lost in penalty shots. Following that, they defeated their neighbors from Slovakia showcasing another solid defensive performance. The Finns will certainly have to play their best game to beat the Czechs.
7. Slovakia
1-0-1-0 3 points
The 2015 bronze medalists needed to make sure they beat Belarus to avoid any potential relegation round appearance. They did so and even though they lost to the Czechs they can still finish high in the group.
8.Denmark
1-0-1-0 3 points.
Denmark's most important game was against Switzerland and they came out to play. Can't call it an upset, but most people probably predicted a Swiss win. Regardless of that, Denmark will most likely avoid the relegation round and face Russia in the quarterfinal.
9.Switzerland
0-0-1-1 1 point.
The Swiss lost to Denmark and were projected to finish the group round with 0 points. However, they had a better idea and they were close to providing the biggest WJHC upset in years leading 2-0 against Canada. They lost in SO but that still gives them a slight chance of surviving.
10. Belarus
0-0-3-0 0 points.
Not much to say here. Belarus will play Switzerland or Denmark to try to avoid relegation.
