Here you go Terry, you’re right back at the point where you started, a full blown rebuild required to react to a roster that is soft and underperforming and won’t back their teammates up when the chips fall. I’m sure next game they will do something to “makeup” for their lack of actions and will trick/fool others that they really have it, but they showed you who they really are.

YOUR GM built this team and this is the product result. In the face of organizational respectability, you have very few shreds of opportunity left to show any life, any pulse, or any sense of respect as a man, or businessman (since that’s the only language you seem to care about). Things need to change.
When someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

I appreciate that Pegula bought the Sabres and kept them in Buffalo. Same goes for the Bills. If we ever lose a pro sports team, they are never coming back.

With that said, Terry buddy, the dream is dead. Hockey heaven isn’t happening. Do the right thing and find a buyer that will keep the team in Buffalo. Or hand over full control to your kids and go back to being a fan. This level of failure can’t be fun to endure as an owner.

With locals losing interest how important are the canadian hockey fans for Pegula?
Is it a minor part of gate revenue?

Leaf, Habs and Sens fans pack it probably 8 games a year

Growing contingents of Edmonton and Vancouver fans coming down from Southern Ontario as well. Then there are the number of metro fans coming up - it's not just UB and Buff State students at Islander/Ranger/Devil games. There are people coming up for the cheap available seats.

I wonder how much of what is going on with Canada and the US, will hurt the Sabres financials

Pen fans show up in force as well

Hadn't really thought about that, but the travel industry is projecting major shortfalls with Canadians cancelling reservations. Combine that with a relatively weak Canadian dollar (not quite to early 2000s levels, but pretty close), and you have some problems. Toronto and Habs fans will travel no matter what, but the situation won't help the rest of the schedule.

Judging by the fire this has stoked, i wouldn’t be surprised if it keeps some from coming down who are Hab/Sen/Leaf fans.

Another great day to sell this team Terry.

Someone asked Chad if he expected the Pegulas to sell the Sabres anytime soon and he said that he does not see them selling in the next 5 years. And he talked about how there was talk in the past of selling a minority share of the team, like they just did with the Bills, but nothing came from it.

I fully expect them to leave the Sabres to the kids and we are stuck with Terry running things for the foreseeable future.

Ahhhhh... memories... feels like it was only yesterday

Will never understand why a guy as rich as he is, who supposedly loves the franchise as much as any of us here, who hears this kind of ovation, would decline to spend a couple million bucks a year to improve the roster/org.

It frankly doesn't make sense. Blow money on your toys like every other Boomer in the country does.

To be fair, he did. For multiple years.

The Pegulas have probably lost more in operating expenses of this team then they spent on purchasing this team.

The problem is, the only way to fix what ails the team is spending. Spending on the front office to get experienced people. The training staff. The facilities.

The thing that is frustrating is the Bills are a model franchise and do all these things. Yet the Sabres are an embarrassment. And I think its mostly because the Bills are self sustaining and the Sabres are bleeding cash like a stuck pig and the fixes have to come directly out of the Pegula family coffers.

--Replacing the roof is not "routine maintenance" 😆 ..this isn't patching a hole.

--It seems pretty logical to me to layoff employees when there is no work happening. It's idiotic to put blame on someone when that happens.

Nobody is going to sit here and say this organization has been run well.. but the constant whining about stupid things is unbearable.

Come on. You have to admit that it is strange for the org to glorify and promote their new jumbotron and roof? Especially when you consider that 1. they are contractually obligated to replace both, and 2. the scoreboard was recommended to be replaced by Daktronics early on in Pegula's tenure and then another decade passed.

The Sabres are only contractually obligated to maintain the inside of the building. The roof was not on them..and the jumbotron i am sure is not a contractual obligation if the old one was still in working order.
No I don't think it's weird that the organization glorified and promoted it. They would be dumb not to. Was it cringe and not done very well by the marketing team? Sure. But it's definitely not weird to me.

Pegula tried to get the county to pay for both and they said no, that isn't the terms of the lease, then Pegula paid for it.

“Under the current lease, it is the responsibility of the team owner to do that,” said Peter Anderson, a spokesman for Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz

For reference on the scoreboard, even a cheapskate like Golisano replaced his after 10 years, within manufacturer recommendations. As somebody who works in proAV, it is not very common for professional sports teams to keep their stuff for nearly double its life expectancy.

Professional sports venues aren't your grandmas living room where they keep a wooden zenith on the floor because "it works fine".

That is very different from saying they are obligated to replace scoreboard every 10 years or whatever.

In regards to the scoreboard.. we are talking about obligation. There is no obligation contractually to replace jumbotron every 10 years or whatever. Bag on him for not doing it sooner all you want... but it wasn't contractually obligated.

As to the roof... Idk what your article stated because it is paywalled ..but instead of taking words from the idiot politicians spokesman ... take it from the politician himself.

Replacing things within factory recommended timelines seems to fall under "maintenance" to me, but I am not a lawyer.

I don't know what you want here, I am not gonna pound my head against the wall to try and convince you of something that is clear as day. Somebody whose paychecks are signed by Erie County, spoke in an official capacity that the county would not be paying for the roof or scoreboard because Terry Pegula was required to pay for all the work that was to be done on the building. Then Terry Pegula paid for it. It is fairly straight forward.

You have to jump through a lot of hoops to get to "The county was supposed to replace the roof, but Terry Pegula did it himself anyways".

I am not arguing that Pegula wasn't responsible for the jumbotron... he is responsible for everything inside the building... But you stated that it was obligated to be done. It wasn't.. Pegula didn't have to replace it.

What hoops am I jumping thru? The actual Erie County Executive ..who also gets paid by Erie County..flat out stated that the County is responsible for the shell of the arena. Case closed.

Now the reasons the Pegulas decided to take on the roof? Idk.. I would venture to guess it wasn't out of the goodness of their hearts. I am assuming they got more money from the county for the Bills stadium or something like that..but it is clear as day they were not contractually obligated to in terms of the lease.

if a owner of a sports team wants to own a team he has to keep up with other teams to compete, to bring fans in, to attract players and so forth, I’m not sure if they can do this but the new clippers arena has ports to charge their phones, improvements just as this is what keeps fans happy and coming, as for the jumbotron it should have been replaced a long time ago it should be automatic decision, Toronto maple leafs who put a new one in 2015, will be putting in a new one within 2 years

Absolutely.. it is what good committed owners do. I won't argue that.
