No great surprise. There has been massive roster turnover, they lost several high level players (Turcotte, Thomas, Clarke + others) and the remaining guys are changing to a new system.
Realistically, Helenius is the only skater on the roster that I would rate as likely to be a full-time NHLer. There are a couple maybes and a couple long shots, but it's the kind of AHL roster you associate with a longterm contender, not an also-ran.

And they got (and had) several AHL-veterans, who had scored pretty well earlier.

This year:

Fagemo 0+0, -5
Hudon, 0+0, -6
Malott, 0+1, -6
Gawdin,, 0+1, -5
Studnicka 0+2, -3

This year's team is offensively talented enough to be a contender in the AHL, but coaching and goaltending is below average and defence is so and so. Reilly Walsh is not a good pp-quarterback, nor is Joe Hicketts.

Pens fan coming in peace. I was wondering what you guys think about Sturm and his coaching? I think he could be a potential Head Coach for the Pens, when they finally fire Sullivan.

He did well when he had talent as a coach in the AHL.

He was awful as an assistant in the NHL though. Keep him away from the powerplay.

He's not playing some of the youth, so if you plan to rebuild, he wouldn't be my first, second, or third choice.

What is going on with the Reign? Granted this is just looking at stats and is a smallish sample size. But wow, top scorer on the team has 8 points in 10 games, good for 83rd in the AHL. Both goalies have GAAs well north of 3.00, and Save %s of less then .880.
Not looking great.

Consequences of having few picks or a regular pipeline. They lost Clarke, Turcotte, Lee, and Thomas as regulars, and they're replaced with Jamsen and Booth.

And Fagemo isn't producing like years back.

Jämsen will add to the team's offensive depth once he adapts to the North American game. He's barely scratched the surface of his capabilities, although his small frame is a bit of an issue – needs to pack on some muscle so he's not getting knocked off his feet every other shift.

At his best, he's the most entertaining player on the ice – one who can solo dangle past defenders and score highlight-reel goals.

Haven't been keeping up with the Reign but is Sturm even playing this kid. Sturm seems to love journeyman AHL lifers over prospects.

He's already adapted , the benches and press boxes in Europe are pretty similar.

Really liked his game in preseason action. High on the kid

That's the thing that frustrates me with Ontario, the AHL is a developmental league, but Sturm is overeliant on veterans to win games.

But the Reign are a middle of the pack team loaded with AHL scrubs... So not only are they not developing younger players, they are still losing games.

Literally the worst possible scenario.
