Henry Mews 3rd Round 74 Overall

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Mews is a smooth, skillful defenceman with crafty activation, poise under heavy fire, and rush defence skills. Cranking up the pace in every facet is required. Every time his teammates turn to look for a passing outlet, he’s right there in a pocket of space. He walks the line and skates all over the opposing zone in search of passing plays and shooting lanes. -EliteProspects 2024 NHL Draft Guide

Wasn't a thread, decided to make one.

Moves the puck very well, smooth skating but he does tend to get beat and look slow in the process. I started to drop him down my list towards the end of the year and U18’s where I thought he got outplayed by almost every D on that Canadian roster.

Pretty good spot to take a flier on the player, but kind of a weird pick to me given Parekh, Poirier, Morin.

I've seen comments about Mews not looking happy, but in the interviews he just looks like someone that doesn't smile much in general, and smiles did creep through. Especially when talking about Battaglia and Parekh as he's friends with both of them.

I liked Mews early in the U18, but he was a faller for sure.
Lots of potential, lets hope we have another horse on the backend

Ah guess like that, I think the theory is coming true. We will batch develop prospects to increase chances of nhl graduation and then retain currency if a log jam develops.

The goal is as many nhl games from all draftees as possible. Even if the player doesn't play for us, maybe we're aiming for ensuring they don't feel like they lost development opportunities in our org?

I'm liking this pick. It'll be fun to monitor his progression going forward.

When are we going to draft Henry Mewtwo?
I hope that doesn't happen via re-entering the draft

Mews is another draft pick I have high hopes for. So nice seeing Calgary picking guys like Mews instead of players like Jake Boltman.

I think these CHL to NCAA moves will benefit alot of these guys. Too bad Parekh couldn’t join his brother in Bemidji.

If Parekh was able to move to the NCAA, I would hope he'd choose a much better program lol... He's an Ivy guy through and through with his brains.

So as far as I know if Mews goes to the NCAA the Flames could lose his rights after only a year (or 2) since he was a CHL draftee? I saw someone post it in the prospect thread, the Flames don't retain his rights for the full 4 years (would be 3 if it carried over from the CHL). I really hope the Flames don't lose him because of rights issues with the NCAA.

Pike wrote an article on this a month ago

Basically the Flames should retain his rights until August 15th after his class graduates

This makes sense and it's how it should be, I think the poster I saw who said they'd lose the rights after 1 year in the NCAA is because that would be the 2nd CHL year after draft which is when we'd lose his rights if he stayed in the CHL (we would have offered a contract anyway so that wouldn't have mattered). However if Pike is right and the transfer goes from the CHL to NCAA rules then we'd have those 4 NCAA years to hold his rights.

Hopefully he's only there for a year then he we can get him into the AHL.
