Lundqvist had an interview with a Swedish tabloid today. To summarize it shortly, he said he was happy with his performance in the first half of the season, he considered himself to be a top goalie, but then he fell through like he has never done before in the second half. He wasn't happy about it. It wasn't anything physical, only mental.

He basically said his focus and morale diminished, he was in a situation he has never been in before, where the team didn't try to win. That affected him alot. He also said it affected him way more than he thought it would, when Zuccarello and other key pieces were traded. We all remember how he started to cry when the media asked him about Zuccarello being traded. That surely didn't help his mentality for the season.

He says he's really happy that it seems like the team is ready to compete again and that he's pumped for the next season. He's excited to see all new faces and he's excited they're all big improvements for the team. He believes he's physically and mentally ready to compete for the Cup, he believes he can still perform as a top goalie - and he expects the team to try the same.

For some reason, this point feels like it kinda got lost as last season progressed. Hank was really f***ing good to start last year, and he really only started to falter in mid-January. If we can find a sweet spot to balance his work load, it'll be the best situation for both him and the team moving forward these next two years.

As long as the team and the management shows him they want to compete, it will be the opposite. He'll become more focused after january. As they showed him they wanted to mail it in, it broke his heart - and so it affected his game.

Lundqvist knows the team is in the middle of a rebuild though. And I don't think anyone mailed it in- we were just "unfortunate" to have lost so many games. I thought the major positive of the season was that they worked hard every game, despite the depleted roster and no playoffs.

I think when he says the team wasn't trying to win, he is referencing management and perhaps even the coaching. Gorton was clearly in re-build mode, and Quinn's time was most likely divided between trying to win and trying to teach.

From David Quinn, via an interview in the Athletic today:

............

I know this is months out or a year out, but do you have any vision or guess as to how this goalie situation with Henrik Lundqvist, Alexandar Georgiev and Igor Shesterkin will play out?

Yeah, listen, Hank’s obviously an elite goalie and people look at his age, and I’ve said this a lot last year, I think the guy still stays in phenomenal shape and played at an elite level for a while last year. Then I think our circumstances kind of got to him a bit. He talked about that. But he’s going to be here this year and next year and he’s going to continue to help us to grow and get back on track. That being said, I also think the trend in this league is there’s a lot more balance in the number of starts for the goalies. Rarely does one guy play 65-70 games anymore, you know? Hank and I have talked about that and Georgie certainly proved he’s earned an opportunity to play an awful lot of hockey for us. So I feel very good about our goaltending situation.

...........

Sounds like they plan at least to have Hank be a split starter with Georgiev and/or Shestyorkin the next two years, but probably not shipping Hank out.

again hank faced a ton of shots. and quality chances too.

thats a big problem.

.915 is fine. thats solid work. overall he was mostly stellar.

less high danger chances and better net from defense will help him and georgie win alot of games for us.

after last night i sit one of fox or hajek and give smith a game on the 3rd pair.

lindy ruff doesnt impress me much

Congrats to Henrik on reaching 450. Doesn't feel like very long ago he was a rookie.
I still remember Creating him in like, NHL 2003 because he wasn't in the game and making his potential 99.

A shot from an elite forward in the high slot off the rush is hardly a softie. Always been Hank's downfall that he stops so many seemingly unstoppable shots that anything that beats him clean is a 'softy'.

If he and Georgiev see a split like Rask and Halak did last year this team is going to be a lot closer to the playoffs that many imagine, and a lot closer than they'll deserve to be.

Our goaltending has been keeping us in games that we should probably have lost. Should be 1-6-0 or 0-6-1 instead of 2-4-1 right now.
