Personally I still dont think you can give a goalie 8m a year. Dont get me wrong, he is the best in the NHL. But at 8m a year its going to have a huge impact on what you can put on the ice in front of him. I think you can win a Cup with an average goalie in todays NHL, as its been done multiple times. He doesnt have to be your best player.

In all fairness, this is either Brooks speculating to drum up readership or Lundqvist's camp leaking a high number in hopes of negotiating down to what they really want/expect.

Or, maybe Lundqvist's camp put out a high number like that, implying to management that it's not his intention of staying with the team?

Basically saying, "I'll sign here for a King's ransom (no pun intended), and only in that situation, otherwise I'll sign at a lower cap hit elsewhere."

It just sounds like to me he doesn't want to stay here past his contract and coming up with a contract like that is evidence of it. It sounds better than coming outright and saying "I don't think this team will compete for the Stanley Cup in my tenure here."

I don't read it that way at all.

I think asking the rangers for 8years / 80 million is a no brainer considering the amount of money he has made Dolan. Hank has essentially dragged this team in to the playoffs every year he has been at the helm.

I think Hank is saying that if he stays he wants to get paid because he doesn't see any of that changing. He envisions more years of 6-8 finishes with him having to stand on his head to get there.

If he thinks that way, and I don't think he does, then he's exacerbating the problem.

And what would be the loving destination to send him?

He's in a good situation here. There have been two teams who have made it past the first round in each of the past two seasons.

2 seasons is a pretty small sample size

Hank's comments weren't awesome for NYR fans, but I wouldn't read into it too much. There's an immense amount of posturing that goes on (particularly behind the scenes) prior to contract negotiations. Dolan will kidnap Hank before he lets him walk. $10M per is crazy with the cap going down; even Philly wouldn't do that. I have to think Brooks is off on that estimate.

The issue is: could you have a better overall team by trading him knowing you'll get a king's ransom (unavoidable terrible pun)? With almost any other star of that caliber, I'd say yes, but he really carries your team; he's irreplaceable. I went to three of the seven Caps v Rags games, including the miserable Game 7, and he's just awesome.

Hank's not going anywhere...2 teams have made it to the 2nd round the last 2 years, Kings and Rangers. We're not the dregs of the NHL like some of this board occasionally paints us as.

Pretty small sample size as I pointed out in a prior response...and while I'll agree we aren't the dregs of the NHL. Maybe, just maybe last season was the outlier season for this team and they have now returned to their norm

I posted this in another thread, but where exactly would Hank go?

We've seen enough of a window into his life to know that he LOVES NYC. I realize he's a major competitor, but I highly doubt that he'd leave NY to play for a more competitive team in a small market.

As far as major markets go, most already have no need for him...L.A., Montreal, Vancouver, Chicago...they've all got their goaltenders.

Toronto is a possibility I guess. NJ and NYI would allow him to stay in the city too. Otherwise there's no chance.

Replace Hank with Messier in these comments...

think the Fishsticks wouldn't love to make a splash ahead of their move to the Barclays?

Lou would never pay Hank $

He has been on the team for 8 years. No one has a better view of whats going with the team than hank.

He has pretty much been the reason the NYR have had any success. He has seen free agents come and go and get PAID BIG TIME MONEY. While he quietly drags the team forward regardless of the dumb moves made by management. So while Hank might make things difficult with his salary demands he has actually earned the right to command that money. And I think he knows that nothing major is going to change with this organization in the remaining years he has left to win it all.

So his salary would handcuff the Rangers but that is the price they will have to pay if they want the continued luxury of his services. Hell it would certainly make if it difficult for Sather to give out crazy money to mercenaries.

If I was Lundqvist, I'd ask for the same as Nash is making. Best player on the team should be paid at least equal to the other highest paid player. Like Malkin and Crosby.

Lundqvist knows if he asks for 10mil the rangers won't win ****. He won't ask for that, not sure how some people are taking this so seriously.

I love Hank, but we've seen guys like Tom Brady in the NFL take a hometown discount and this season a pay cut to better the team.

Fatso took less money to stay in NJ.

If Hank really wants 10 per, well then let him go to market or trade him at the deadline next year...

This I fully agree with. Like you, I don't put almost any stock in the 10 mil nonsense. But I can easily see him asking to be the highest paid player on the team, or at least tied with Nash, and who could honestly argue against him on that?

You make it sound like he's being paid the league minimum. Have you seen comparable salary/cap hit info on goalies?

So to sum up what you think Hanks mindset is, Management is going to make the same poor decisions they always have so I should get as much money as I can?

Just watched hank's presser, and I do not like the vibe I got when he was asked about re-signing.

He made an awful lot of references in the past tense, "The Rangers treated me well" "I have liked being here", etc. Not really quotes that make me believe his first priority is to resign with NY no matter what. If he truly wanted to be here he would have made the same comments Stepan made about wanting to retire a ranger and be here for his whole career.

Hopefully lundqvist forces the issue and makes Sather fire Torts. I think it's a possible angle lundqvist is trying to play with his contract demands.

To be honest as far as goaltenders go Hank was overpaid on his last contract, considering its still fair value. He has earned it, it was given on faith and he lived up to it.

I don't do 10 but I offer him a nice raise. If he shows he wants to test the market trade him.

can we end this thread?

Hank loves NY, Rangers love him, they were first in the East last yr so they have pieces that can make it work.

why do we have jump off the bridge based on a short season?

i think we're all jumping off the bridge due to Hank's comments haha

Lundqvist signed his current contract in January 2008. That contract is still market 5 years later. Rinne makes $7M per. Henrik's AAV is $125K less. Usually a player outperforms a contract or the contract is not considered market value anymore. That hasn't happened here. Great goalie. He has been nominated for the Vezina many times but won once. He doesn't have a lock on it like Lidstrom with the Norris.

Hopefully lundqvist forces the issue and makes Sather fire Sather, as well as Torts. In a perfect world Hank would resign here for less (maybe 5 m per year) so that they can build a better team around him.

As I replied to an earlier post.

Turn back the clock to 1997 and substitute Messier for Hank...

Rangers were 3 seasons removed from a Cup, had added TGO and went to the ECF
