I think either Hank or Tortorella is gone after next season. Heard from a bird that Hank was not a Jonny Cakes cheerleader. Not a fan of Stone Age hockey. The Avery tweet had wheels. This I know...

Maybe someone should start a poll which of them should be gone in 2014. The closeness of the results would not surprise me with some of the moronic comments and shill like loyalty to the coaching staff that I have seen around here.
That's concerning, and really not surprising. If it's true, I wonder if Tortorella will be gone this offseason.

The Lundqvist contract situation reminds me of Darelle Revis and the Jets. You got the best player at his position. But, two things: First, his best days are likely behind him. Second, is it prudent to pay commit that much cap space to this position?

Brooks wrote Lundqvist wants at least $10M per. 8 years. Henrik can't complain about the team around him when he is making $10M minimum.

There is very little doubt that Lundqvist, operating on a six-year contract under which he is earning an average of $6.875 million per, will surpass Alex Ovechkin ($9.538 million per) as the NHL’s highest paid player.

Lundqvist’s asking price is likely to be a minimum of $80 million for eight years, the maximum length allowed for a player re-signing with his own team.

Chicago and Detroit are paying their goalies under $3M cap wise. Howard got an extension worth $5.29M. Niemi has a $3.8M cap hit. $5M for Fleury. Lundqvist is better than those goalies. That's not the argument. Its hard to have many other high priced players when the goalie is making $10M. With the back-up,the Rangers will need to invest $12M of the cap in goaltending. Stepan needs a new contract. McDonagh needs a new contract. Hagelin needs a new contract. The Rangers will need to amnesty Richards just to pay for the increases in 14-15 to Lundqvist,Callahan and Girardi. There is no way they can risk Richards suffering another concussion and they can't buy him out. Lundqvist by himself with take up any cap increase for 14-15.

With the Cap Benefit Recapture clause, max 35% variance year-over-year, and max 50% variance between cheapest year and richest year of contract, the NHL effectively eliminated back-diving contracts. At $10M per year, that's a tough pill to swallow. How many goalies are effective starters in their mid-to-late 30s anyway? And at $10M per year, Lundqvist is going to have to be a lot better than just "effective".

Martin Brodeur signed a 6 year deal at $5.2M per at the age of 34. The Salary Cap at the time was $44M. Players were entitled to between 54 and 57% of hockey-related revenues. All signs pointed to the cap going up during that term.

Lundqvist reportedly wants an 8 year deal at $10M per at the age of 32. The Salary Cap is going to be $64.3M. Players are entitled to 50% of hockey-related revenues. No one knows how quickly the cap is going to grow over the next 8 years.

I know this team would be screwed without Hank and I hope Brooksie is wrong, but $10M per for 8 years? I'm sorry but Hank could leave if he wants that much. I'm not a fan of skaters getting 8 year deals, and DEFINITELY not goalies. God forbid Hank suffers a major injury in a couple years and declines rapidly to the point he's a minor league goalie. And a $10M cap hit is beyond ridiculous, even if it's for Hank.

Oh, hells no!

An average of 10 mil a year til he's 39? Not a freaking chance.

If Henrik truly wants to win - and do it in New York - he'll sign a friendly 7 mil a year over 4 years, and even that is stretching the budget.

Which NHL team is paying Lundqvist $10M per? Or more? Philly? Lundqvist is going to a division rival to be public enemy #1? OK.

His current cap hit is $6.875M, so going up to $7M wouldn't break the bank.

Its until he is 40. Henrik has another season left so he will be 32 at the end of his current contract. An 8 year extension starting in 14-15 takes him to 40.

He's the best goalie in the world. I love the way he plays his position. But 8 years at 10 per? Yeah, I'd rather tank for 3-5 years than taking that risk. Even if he keeps playing at an elite level until he's 40, that kind of cap hit is going to handcuff us sooner or later. We're not going to be competitive giving him this much. No thanks, Hank. I hope the Post is just making **** up, though.

Don't forget the crop of RFAs coming up in the next year or two, and you'll have to spend some money for a top 6 guy to replace Richards as well.

Even worse. Imagine paying a 40-year-ole netminder around 7-10 mil (whatever the variance allows)? Ouch!

Henrik can't command this kind of money and expect a competitve team around him.
If this is the case they should trade him and start a rebuild. Draft a goalie.
Paying him $10 per is insane

But maybe he is skeptical about the program. If that is the case, the Rangers should be afraid.
They should be very afraid of taking another step sideways
.

Hank is really skeptical about winning it all in the new NHL (post lockout) with Torts at the helm - feverishly condoning Cave Man hockey. He and Torts have at best a frosty relationship. This I have been saying for some time. This I have personally heard from 2 separate sources close to him here in Sweden.

Definitely puts Sather on the spot in the hot seat now. His contract demands - as per Brooks - sound outrageous to me as well - and if correct - well then "Houston we got a problem". Or as Red said in Plutoon "I got a bad feeling about this one..." Nobody deserves the money he is asking for here (if true) and I think he overplays his cards if he goes out with this in negotiations as it will hurt the team quite a bit (and hamper the chances to win it all) if such a crazy demand for a max-contract were to come as a "take it or leave it" situation.
Maybe Torts stays and Hank leaves. Sad to say it - but this nightmarish scenario looks possible as of now... Well then we will be drafting high for some time at least...

There's no way I make Lundqvist the highest payed player in the game. Look @ Luongo and his contract. I love the guy, but 8 Yrs/$80 million? Huge, huge pass for a multitude of reasons:

1.) ~15% ($10 million + 1.5 for back up/$64 million cap space = 15+% of your cap space for goalies)
2.) Injury / early retirement = likely. No thanks
3.) Want to win, Henrik? Then you simply can't get a contract like this for the sake of the team. Any team.
4.) Diminishing value/play is almost a certainty at ages 36-40
5.) More $ than Crosby? Ovie? Malkin? etc... No thanks. Go the Brodeur route and be reasonable and look at the whole picture - legacy, honor, loyalty. There's lots of $'s to be made from that and lots more if you spend your entire career in NY

Gotta agree with you there
6 years at 8 M average max is the most I would consider paying. 48 million dollars. Stretch it to 50. Take it or leave it King

What teams can afford to pay Hank that kind of cash? Teams with youn star players on low contracts... Oilers?.... Islanders? ....

Just watching Hanks post season presser and when they ask him about an extension it didnt sound that positive to me. "I'll talk to my agent" doesnt give me a lot of confidence. The guy is an utlra competitor and wants to win a Cup first and foremost. If he really wants 10mil a year then I say you have to let him go. That contract would cripple the teams ability to ice a competitive teams. Pains me to say, because he's an amazing goaltender, but you cant give a goalie that kind of money.

I thought he would always be a Ranger, but Im starting to think he's gone after next year.

HAHAHAAHA 10 mill a year? for a goalie? with the cap going down? Im the biggest Hank fan there is, if that were remotely true then say no.

In all fairness, this is either Brooks speculating to drum up readership or Lundqvist's camp leaking a high number in hopes of negotiating down to what they really want/expect.
