I'm not too keen on Hank having a cap hit north of $8m, but on a positive note; surely it would stop all those 'poor hank', 'hank should demand a trade' posts after a Rangers loss

How are they not further back? Rangers went to the ECF last year, then the second round this year. Islanders didn't even make the playoffs for 5 years, then got in this year and lost in the first round. Yeah, they gave Pitt a few good games, but they were good compared to what was expected of them, which was practically nothing. The Rangers disappointed by losing in the second round. The teams have totally different expectations on them at this point. The Isles very well may be a force in the future, but they're not one now and they still have a ton of work to do.

Cap space doesn't really impress me or dictate which team is closer to contending.

This is toally about the future...the last five years are irrelevant to how the Islanders will be a year from now if/when Hank becomes a UFA, and then going forward from there. And us going to the ECF last year is irrelevant as well...we don't even have the coach who brought us there anymore.

We finished one point ahead of the Islanders this year. One point. Take Hank off the Rangers and put him on the Islanders for this season...do we still finish ahead of them? Exactly.

They have one of the best players in the league locked in at a $5.5 million cap hit through 2018. You may not think cap space matters, but it does mean the Islanders can sign players that the Rangers can't. It matters.

We're going to have enough trouble signing our own RFA's...the Rangers still have a ton of work to do as well, with or without Hank.

Cheapest year can be no less than 50% of most expensive year. Change the 4 to a 5 and it's CBA compliant.

Price's cap hit is $6.5 million per, which is what matters regarding the contract, but your point is still valid. It would be insane to move Hank to an $8M plus cap hit.

The bold sounds like a fair deal.

A slight paycut, but nothing extreme. Locks him up for practically the remainder of his career and all of his prime.

Since we can't see the future, we need to look at the past and present and make judgments about what is mostly likely to happen going forward.

All of this "if" scenarios are useless. There are a million factors in every season for every team, it's never, ever as simple as hypothetically moving one player to another team and thinking about how good they'd be then. Teams suffer injuries, players slump, other players play way above their heads, etc. The fact is, Hank is on the Rangers now and was last year and, and that year is over for both teams.

The Isles have a great, great 1C to build around. That's a huge advantage, but it doesn't mean that they don't have a ton to prove still. Cap-space helps with UFAs or trading picks and prospects for big money players. The Isles can go UFA all day, we've seen first hand how UFAs get paid for what they've done, not what they're going to do. I'd rather have the Rangers d corp and established forwards like Callahan, Stepan, Nash, etc than cap-space. Maybe the Isles will trade prosecpts and picks for a big money guy and put that cap space to work, but they'll still have holes.

The Isles are on the upswing, no question, but team building rarely goes the way you expect when you expect. If Hank leaves NYR, it'll be for a team that is done building and is real close to a cup. If he leaves NYR for the Islanders, he'll have the same odds to win a cup as he would here, if not worse IMO. You can disagree. The Rangers are farther along in building than the Isles also IMO. Well, it's not a paycut. It's a cap hit cut. His pay would certainly increase by quite a bit for the first couple of years.

I do disagree with your posts comparing the Rangers to the Islanders, but we'll leave it at agreeing to disagree.

As for why Hank would leave, there is the chance Hank leaves for nothing more than the highest bidder....like so many athletes before him. In that case, the answer can still be the Islanders, because they have cap space available that the Rangers do not.

Not this Brooklyn. I suspect that the contract will be higher than many here want, but I have no doubt it will get worked out. Don't want any distractions about this during the season and Lundqvist is too important (both to the fans and the team) to lose to free agency, much less a trade.
