But man I love carbs. No rice or potatoes or pasta seems like hell
Zwift (interactive cycling and treadmill software) is an unbelievable experience. I set my mountain bike up in the basement with a smart trainer attached to the rear wheel and a TV in front of me and pedal through London, jungles, volcanoes and other locations. There are workouts, social rides, races, training rides of every level. The smart trainer simulates flats, hills and slopes by adjusting the resistance o9f the roller on the back wheel. It's been an awesome experience this winter and my 10 year battle with left leg ITB syndrome is gone. Zwift also can be used with treadmills, the runners are visible on the roads as I pedal.

Anybody else here eat coconut/coconut oil?
Recently tried coconut oil with breakfast. Im impressed

I’ve been lifting weights again for a few months now, a modified P90X with dumbbell bench and incline bench, and just switched to this Arnold Schwarzenegger program that hits each muscle group twice a week. Day one kicked my ass in a good way, definitely more intense then what I’ve been doing. Arnold Schwarzenegger Volume Workout Routines

You have to take what Arnold says with a grain of salt when it comes to training though, the guy talks about lifting 5 hours a day which is only possible on steroids. Thought I’d try to resurrect this thread.

I eat a Lot of salads and am 5’9 190 lbs last week - going to gym/cardio/yoga 4 days a week

I been eating salads 4 to 7 days a week for lunch - protein dominant low grains/bread carbs only couple times a week

My salads I use Primal kitchen dressing made with avocado oil and no croutons or other hidden carbs

Is eating this many salads extreme?

Anyone else eat a salad a day?

Sounds like it’s good for me but to much of anything not sure is good

I don't think a salad a day is too much. My sister has salad with or for lunch 5 days a week.

Not salad but I was eating kale shakes for awhile, I don’t know why. If you need to clean out the plumbing that’s the way to do it. The taste wasn’t bad but they’re a pain to make all the time. Instead I eat no fiber.

Eating is the hardest part of working out, getting enough protein isn’t easy.

Eating well is really hard when you travel 5 days a week. I need to be better about it though, and I decided I'm going to get a Planet Fitness membership I can use where I travel and also at home. Them being open 24 hrs a day is important. Not that I'll be getting up early, but working out late is more likely to happen, especially with me being in the office until 9 each night.

two glasses of non alcoholic red wine at the evening time has been a godsend

very good and noticeable health benefits

Think about introducing a 50 billion probiotic into everyone's diet. One sandwich can screw up stomach flora for about 6 weeks. Unbalanced or poor stomach flora which is caused by grains and sugars is showing itself more and more as part of the causal daisy chain of a myriad of illnesses and conditions.

different things work for different people/goals as well.

Personally I plateaued for a while and decided to try something new. Went to the 1 body part per day and almost immediately broke through it. For me, working 1 body part for 60-90 min straight was what worked.

Also added a drop set to the end of every exercise

Wow, hadn't see this thread in a while! ;)

I've been doing really well with exercise, but part of that is mindset. I took up jumping rope as a hobby three years ago and I absolutely love it. So I never think about it as 'working out' or 'exercising.' It's just something I really want to do. I've gotten a decent handle on a lot of the trick jumps, which makes it even more fun.

But this year I did work on being mentally fit. It's excruciatingly hot most of the year where I live, and this year was especially bad - 90's in April and no relief until November. But I persevered. There were days my body did not want to be subjected to what I was putting it through, but I've worked so hard on my technique, I'm unwilling to let it slip. So I feel like I'm mentally stronger, too. ;)

As for food, I try to eat mostly clean so I can perform with the rope; but I'm not obsessive about it. I also have to be realistic. I don't live on a farm, nor do I have time to shop for 'real' food that's fresh every couple of days. So I have sandwiches, cold cuts, etc. I'm 50, and so far no problems.

I read Tom Brady's book on maintaining a lifetime of peak performance. He's got some interesting suggestions, some of which are doable for me, others of which are not. He does claim that many athletes train incorrectly which leads to injury, so I've wondered if someone from the Bruins' staff should pay him a visit? ;)

Recently found a used Precor 5.23 elliptical (older model/fixed handlebar).... first time using and all I can say is impressive! best elliptical/cardio machine I have used. My legs are on fire today...no knee pain you get from running also

also anybody a fan of pure concord grape juice? (none of that from concentrate Welsch grape juice). A glass or two of these per day has been a godsend. It's like medicine

New Year new me! :laugh::sarcasm:

Went on a two week hiatus during the holidays. Jumped back into it last night.

Anyone else have a home gym setup?

Kind of curious what others have found equipment wise to be a necessity/cost efficient in their home gym... Guess it also depends on your goals.

I have somewhat inadvertently amassed quite a bit of home fitness equipment over the last 6-7 years.

If I could do one thing over, I would have bought adjustable dumbbells in the beginning. Having never lifted weights, I started with 8 lb. and 10 lb. dumbbells. They were inexpensive and easy to store. As I built strength, I would buy the next heavier set.

Even through the 20's, its was OK. But as the weight got heavier, the price got higher and the dumbbells bigger (obviously!).

I've now got through 55 lb. dumbbells and have two racks full. It's not a huge issue, but for likely less money, I could've bought a great pair of adjustable dumbbells and one stand.

That being said, if you go that route, don't skimp. I did buy a set a couple of years ago, but it wasn't a high end pair. I didn't feel comfortable pushing them over my head, since there are movable parts.

Another great inexpensive first addition is a stability ball. In addition to endless challenging core exercises, it can be used for dumbbell bench press, and it makes the exercise even more challenging.

Five years ago I did add a gym machine. It was a deal I couldn't pass up, as with rebate it was only $150. As I progressed, I used it less, as I understand free weights are better. But it is great to be able to do lat pulldowns at home, as well leg extensions and single leg curls. The latter two are especially nice to have after tiring compound lifts on leg day. This is the one I have:
10530721

I don't do the seated chest press a lot, as I prefer free weights, but it is a safe way to go heavy. I also use the preacher pad with dumbbells.

I did add a squat rack with barbell a couple of years ago. I also have an EZ bar, but lately I've been using it less. I'm left side dominant and can definitely notice weakness on my right when not isolating.

But as nice as all that stuff is, for me nothing beats the humble and inexpensive jump rope! ;)

I’ve had a pull up bar for years, and a set of bow flex adjustable dumbbells for a couple years now. I got back into weight training last summer and picked up the powerblock 70’s. With those I’m lifting more often then ever, soon I’ll want the expansion set to make them 90 lbs. Beats going to the gym imo.

Thank you both!

I started this home gym project at the start of 2018.

I currently have- A bench that inclines, a barbell with two individual stands that support it, an ez bar, dumbbells (5-30 pound sets), a stationary bike, a treadmill and one of those all in one machines like Aeroforce has and I too use the preacher bad but I also use the pully above for pull downs and the pully on the bottom for rows.

My newest addition is going to be a bar that I'm installing in my wall for different style pull ups and hanging leg raises.

I feel like I have done well with the space I have available. Although I've been looking to add more in order to expand what I can do in my gym.

The next piece of equipment might be a hex bar. But I feel like it's going to take up a lot of space whereas it might not be necessary.

I've been told by many that free weights are best and that it is all about natural movement. I try to stick with this philosophy as much as I can.

I can't remember (and frankly I'm too lazy to look through 12 pages of posts to find it) if I posted about this, but I've dropped an entire size in one year of walking & eating better/less. I've also started lifting, if you can call 8 pound dumb bells lifting) to strengthen my shoulders, arms & hands. When the heaviest thing you lift during the work day is a stapler your upper body strength can really deteriorate lol.

Good luck to everybody!

High parallettes - dips and inverted rows. A must for a home gym, is you ask me.
