There are many young players on VAN who broke in with Vignaeult as the coach. For a guy who hates young players, many of them played under him. What young players does VAN have? Gillis has traded how many picks and prospects for the Ballards of the world? I read an article from a VAN writer who thought the young player argument was a crock.

Agreed, although the main complaints about AV with young players have stemmed from first Hodgson and now Kassian.

Not for anything, but I have no problem with whatever player(s) disliked Torts... I know I am usually in the minority for this, but I don't look at athletes as cattle or circus clowns who dance for our entertainment. They are not martyrs by any means, and yes, they are the luckiest SOBs in the world because they get paid to do what we'd do for free, but that doesn't mean a coach can treat them like he's R. Lee Ermy in Full Metal Jacket..

A coach should coach his players in a system based on the team's talent as a whole, not as to what he wants because "dammnit, I'm the coach and this is what i want"

I assume Richards is the person Boomer is talking about, and if so, good for Richards... Not saying Richards played well by any stretch, but he came here to be a top-line center and help lead this team. Torts constantly shuffling lines and benching him and others (Hi Gabby!) because they don't block shots/play Selke-like hockey must have been infuriating.

I truly believe that this team, with a calmer, more adaptive coach (not saying I have an answer as to who) will flourish. They're not 1 player away from a Cup, but they're not a mediocre team either.

actually, boomer flat out said......"btw, it wasnt brad richards" who he was referring too......

He is safest and best choice for this team out of those that are available. Babcock would be second. I cannot see this team being entrusted to someone with zero head coaching experience.

Ruff is the best candidate but this is Hfboards and like a younger player is ALWAYS better than a veteran. A younger coach with no NHL coaching experience is a genius and Ruff is an idiot.

I'm sure only a week ago the people calling for Eakins to get the job never even heard of him. Now he's the "it" choice....it's hysterical and predictable....We have a veteran poster that wants the job to go to somebody nobody has ever heard of.

It's crazy....

You know exactly what it means. Hasek had an ego (like Hank) Hasek hated got Nolan fired (much like Hank and Torts) Hasek was 32 and in the prime of his career when Ruff was hired. (hank 31 and in the prime of his career)

Nolan was also fired and blackballed from the league (and probably blackballed again) because of the rumors... A coach that good doesn't go without work without a good reason. I tend to believe that rumor is true, meaning, not Hasek's fault really.

Ruff and Eakins are Uncle Roger disciples. Ruff was an assistant with Roger in FLA. Eakins is from Peterborough which is Uncle Roger and Soupy Campbell hockey. Why do think Eakins played for the Rangers under Soupy and Dick Todd? Peterborough Petes connections.

My guess is Hank, since there has been so much talk about him souring on Torts. No matter who it was, it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth...

Didn't listen to B&C that day, so I stand corrected on Richards.

I still believe it's okay who said it. It's not like Torts is a quiet, respectable guy who never threw his own players under the bus. There's only so many times you can bench guys, call players out in the media, and be a jerk before the players finally revolt...

Tom Renney is a perfect example of how to be a respectable coach. He might have worn out his welcome because of his style too, but no one, be it player, fan, or team employee can say he was an unlikeable jerk.

Ok...you can't believe what you want but I remember what happened.

During the 1996 playoffs, in Game 3 against the Senators, Hasek left with an apparent injury. He skated right off the ice and straight into the trainer’s room without even looking at head coach Ted Nolan. The two had not been getting along and many feel Hasek faked or at least exaggerated the injury. Hasek was cleared to play in the next round but refused to do so.

On the day Hasek was presented with the Vezina Trophy he said "it would be better for him" if Nolan didn't return as coach the following season. That same day Nolan won the Coach of the Year award. The Sabres offered Nolan a one-year deal clearly knowing he would reject it. With Nolan gone, the Sabres signed Lindy Ruff, who is still coaching in Buffalo even though Hasek moved on after the 2000 season

I really don't see Tippett being available. If he leaves Phoenix you might as well ship the team out now. Eakins seems like an interesting choice. Up and comer who could be lightning in a bottle. Could snag him early and then we have a coach for years to come, or he could be crap in the NHL. I think you know what your getting with Ruff and AV. I think the whole AV hates young guys is ridiculous. He probably has the same mindset that Torts does. If your on my team, in the NHL, your going to be held accountable for your actions. If your trying to win a cup a rookie cant play like a rookie. I can easily see this going to Ruff or AV. Boucher might be a dark house but Sather will go with the big name I think.

McLellan?

McLellan is an interesting candidate, if he's available. Unable to take the Sharks to the next level, but then again, neither was Wilson. McLellan came in as the next big coach after a great AHL career and some well-spent years as Asst in Detroit under Babcock.

Don't worry, I'm sure we'll find this mythical coach everyone clamored for, who will always be consistent with his lines, will be willing to sacrifice defense for offense, will give rookies who don't play well tons of ice time in important games, will magically turn a so-so group of forwards into an offensive juggernaut, will always divulge what injuries players have, and won't be mean to reporters.

well at the very least, one who can construct a power play that scores once and a while...

that and not asking his players to play shooting gallery defense...

not too much to ask...

So, as I was going to bed last night, i was watching boomer and carton......really, more by accident, I had just finished watching the Detroit vs. NYR game where Coccur and Probert fought. Anyway..... I got to listen to both boomer and carton spout off about how they were either for or against torts getting fired. All of a sudden, boomer starts talking about how he had spoken to a highly respected player and vertan on the rangers squad about two months ago, and he was told that the team had basically turned on torts. The player said that the big core of players had begun to tune torts out and were getting tired of him. now......

1) Boomer wouldnt tell us who he was talking about......but did say however, that by what he had just said on air, you could probably figure it out....

2) Boomer then proceeded to say that he now thinks much less of said player and his level of respect for him has changed....

Does anybody have some insight on this?

This jives with what I heard from someone who knows Brad Richards.

Was told he was "Happiest guy in NY. The team wanted him gone"

I never said you were wrong... I just added that those rumors about Nolan and Hasek's wife were serious enough that cost Nolan a legitimate career coaching the NHL...

If McLellan was available, I would be all for it.

I'll put my two cents in with Boucher since I was a Lightning season ticket holder during his tenure.

He is a coach who expects effort every night and is hard on his guys. He's definitely a short life span coach, maybe 3 years max-- BUT -- he's an excellent tactician both offensively and defensively. He plays to the teams strength and covers up their weakness by making solid adjustments PER OPPONENT. He's big on preparation with special teams - epsecially the Power Play. They never had that great of a PK while he was there but it was more about personnel imo.

He treats each player like an individual and tries to find ways within his system to let them do what they want to do. Martin St.Louis attested to this and many of his AHL guys said they 'felt comfortable' playing within his system because it didn't stifle their own personal playing style much.

No one will confuse him with Scotty Bowman or Jaques Lemaire (his good friend) but he can get the job done in New York. Going to watch all of his teams they were always well prepared but a lot of the time they were let down by poor goaltending or individually pathetic attempts at defense. He also got pretty lucky (Tampa Bay did I guess) by facing the Penguins without Crosby or Malkin.

Yzerman is a far bigger culprit than Boucher was in Tampa Bay. Boucher did the best with what he was dealt and when he was dealt a good hand like the Rangers have now - he produced results. When he had NO depth, sucky goaltending, and questionable defense - well he got about what you'd expect any coach to get.

I'd be fine with Boucher here honestly. We could do a lot worse.

Messier and Gretzky as possible coaches are the lazy NY media playing to the average fan. If Mark wants to coach,go do what Roy did. Or what Weight is doing now. Wayne. I would rather have Paulina coach the Rangers. The Canuck fans hated the Hodgson for Kassian trade. Hodgson hurt his back. VAN doctors misdiagnosed the injury. Vigneault told Hodgson to stop making excuses about being sent back to Brampton. Then when Hodgson made the Canucks,he wanted out. Gillis traded him for Kassian. He took a chance on getting a power forward which are hard to find. The trade hasn't worked out for the Canucks. Kassian hurt his back this season. Those power forwards are projects and hit or miss.

To the few people constantly harping on how terrible our roster is (like a broken record) to satisfy their egos, was the Hawks roster good enough this year? They were a 6 seed last year and an 8 seed 2 years ago. No coaching changes but also no major changes. The Rangers added like one good not great player last year and went from 8th and out in 5 to 1st and the ECF. Let's stop pretending like it's impossible to make huge changes in a year.
