Hayton has never (at least since he started for the Greyhounds at 16) been slow at processing, or had noticeably slow feet. I think the last 2 years has messed with his confidence - that would explain why he looked slow at times this year. Armstrong not mentioning him means one of two things - they are trying to relieve some pressure on him, or they are considering moving him. Either way, I hope he reaches his full potential. I've said before, he is one of the most well-rounded Greyhounds ever.
He reflexes have been slow as shit in the NHL. His reaction time is way slow.

Really think there's a bunch of people reading way to much into Hayton's development. A player doesnt often just lose their potential unless they don't work hard behind the scenes. If you disagree look at players like Bennett, Turris, Seguin who all had the same things said about them and their development then got utilized differently on another team. Or even just sometimes it takes time and coaching changes... Look at mac and Rantanen in Colorado who had to listen to those same things and even trade rumours till they broke out.
Say what you want about how much Hayton played last year but the fact is those 13min in 82 games are minor to his development compared to the hours he spent training on and off the ice every week with actual professional hockey players instead of junior players... He hasn't lost the potential/skill he had before.. at most he might need a coach who will play him to his strengths, some time to grow and maybe some confidence. Still think he likely becomes a good-solid 2nd line center who is a good post season player... Best case scenario is likely Horvat.. worst case (hopefully) Bonino, but more likely somewhere in between.

Great post. A cheap 2C is still a wildly valuable asset, especially if he is coming into his prime as people like Dvo or Chychrun need raises/extensions or if we manage to bring in Eich or Matthews. Having two Dvo's down the lineup instead of one Dvo and a Schmaltz would be a wonderful problem to have. I would rather have two very good two-way centers who can pot 20g-45p than two Duchenes/Schmaltz's. His WJC performance shouldn't be understated. I feel confident in saying he shouldn't have been a top 5 pick, but that doesn't mean he won't be a valuable asset.

I thought BA's chatter about Kyrou was a direct correlation about being patient with Hayton. I only heard a clip though so maybe I am missing something.

WJCs showed a helluva lot of potential.
He wasn't going to learn to process more speed at the same level. He also wasn't going to learn it in practice and the press box. He needed to be in the A, but the safeguard to the Canadian Jr's made that impossible.... it's a mess and in hindsight definitely should have gone back, if he was going to see such miniscule NHL icetime.

No interest in naming Jay Varady? Maybe keeping him as an assistant coach? Name him alternate coach?

His 'assistant' role was largely limited to video and working with the taxi squad. I would personally explore it given how many Roadrunners have come up and delivered, but it's very early. It's possible some of Armstrong's candidates will be open to retaining him as a forward/PP coach.

As someone who works out, trains and plays hockey with professional hockey players most summers during the off season I strongly disagree with this. I think in game is better for getting the feel of the speed but practice is the main place you go to improve on it... the better the team you're on, the better and faster your practices will be and the more you will see improvement in the players themselves... Also why having good leadership and personalities in the locker room is important.. players like Kessel who don't practice hard will hold back players he's paired with in practice.. where as a kid like Chychrun who practices hard will have whoever he's paired with pushing themselves to keep up with him

It's anyone's guess how Hayton will end up. Hope for the best but expect the worst. I have a feeling BA is going to use Hayton for trade bait. If BA did in fact have Hayton in the 20's on his draft board I don't think he is as high on him as most of the posters here.

Junior is one thing, the NHL quite another. Processing the game at the junior level compared to the NHL is night and day. Many a high end draft picks turn out not making the NHL or never meet expectations.

Army is always interesting and entertaining.

Even his introductory press conference was more exciting than any game this season.
He always sounds genuine too. That's what I liked about Maloney as well. He really emphasized the draft in that interview but he said "we have to find a way" and "there's no excuses" several times. There's no feeling sorry for themselves about the draft picks lost. About the coach, he specifically said Murello would "spend the money" if they came to him with a good candidate. Who is the "big name coming from Europe" he mentioned?

I did that every summer for three years and disagree, it’s just not the same. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but my point was he should have seen far more game time.

Exactly, who is the "Big Name" coming from Europe?

That would be Russia though, not Europe. Or did he play in the European league??

That's what I was thinking at first that Jaskin is playing out of KHL so how can that be a big name from Europe, but reviewing the top scorers in all those leagues, there aren't any big names as far as I can tell.

If you actually listen to it, he's talking about a player not a coach and I think it's clear he means Jaskin.

1. He said "pretty big" so we aren't talking about a star. Jaskin is obviously a bigger name than Vejmelka or Provolnev. We didn't have to Google the name Jaskin.

2. Jaskin is the leading goal scorer in the KHL two years running. That's the 2nd best league in the world.

3. In hockey, Russia is "Europe". I've never once heard anyone make a distinction. If a guy signs with Kunlun, he's gone to "Europe". It doesn't make sense but it is what it is.

Anyway, that interview made it clear Jaskin is getting done. Which is good news. He's better than Fischer or Hayden or Cagguila. This is good news.

Jaskin never did it for me in 5 years of playing for the Blues. Hope he learned a lot in "Europe."

As far as a coach, you guys can have Van Ryan. Yes we won the Cup with him, but the real change on defense came when Larry Robinson gave input. If I were trying to pilfer from the Blues Assistant coaches, it would be Steve Ott.

My 2 cents.

That is setting the bar pretty damn low. Dumpster diving.
