They played like 4-5 full games together and no games as a main pair the year before.

People here are saying things like Byram had the easier matchups and now he will have hard ones. Byram often had thr tougher matchups. Especially him with Power. They faced more top lines of other players and played more with their teams 3rd lines while Dahlin was given the matchup battle. Thats a role he won't have to take anymore. But you can compare matchups on hockeyviz or naturalstattrick.

Byram should now have a role he has been not able to get his entire career. Vlasic will be the matchup guy. Unless they play them together.
Should be encouraging and I’ll try to dig up the article because it flatters Bo as well, Power was getting Seabrook comparisons from someone on The Athletic based on under the hood numbers.

Maybe some Keith <-> Bo comparisons aren’t too far off

What does 2.5 years ago have to do with anything? You think players dont evolve or improve especially young d?
think people are anchored to the fact that Colorado gave him away when assessing the return on the subsequent trade...Colorado having piss poor asset management has nothing to do with what Byram is worth in 2026...If a 50 point winger in Eklund is worth pick 9 then why is a top 4 defenseman not worth 5 picks better when the production was good, the draft pedigree is elite and most expect a positive bump to his numbers as his opportunities increase a lot

If some folks are upset that the 4th wasnt used to land a forward to help Bedard, I can understand that. Those of us who wanted to make a move felt that was absolutely necessary.

Byram was a player the brass has wanted and yes it is a heavy price to pay but he was arguably the best dman available that can help not only the younger dmen but our overall offense and power play which in turn helps 98.

Free agency hasnt even started yet, the draft hasnt happened yet, offer sheets not allowed yet..we arent done, Bedard will get help as KD has tons of assets to move to do so...

Don't know how to determine if this is a great trade or a huge overpayment yet.

Interesting quotes from last game of last season from some on this board. Example Musto "Crevier was the best d-man on this team this season imho".

For the next couple of seasons I see improvement from the "D". There is no argument there I would hope. Even Crevier points (25) was significantly below Byram's 40.

No one at number 4 would be ready to play NHL hockey for at least 1-2 seasons. You remember the "chu**ies everyone was getting when Rinzel played in 9 games 2 years ago. It didn't pan out like everyone expected.

So why has everyone forgotten the missing man?

This is going to be long but if you want to feel better about it, I recommend reading this as you just might. Well some of you at least.

I hated the deal last night and I woke up hating it less. Still not loving it but starting to see things clearly? Here's my logic as to why I and pretty much all of the hockey world sans Mario Tirabassi hated it and a logical rebuttal:

1. They could have gotten Byram for less: Well if the reporting on what SJ offered is accurate, this simply isn't true. Turns out they offered 9, 27, and a player (Assuming Pohlkamp - maybe Chernyshov?) It sucks that SJ is in a better situation to acquire assets this offseason as the extra first they acquired didn't transfer to next season and they had Eklund to sell as expendable. The good news is we, as of now, have 3 1sts to play and finagle with next year and will have a full extra year of data on our young players that will make them attractive to other teams as our next wave comes in. (Nestrasil, Felcman, Boisvert, Vanacker, Spellacy)

2. Bowen Byram isn't that good: Well it's true that he's not a top pairing defenseman. But I think KD is gambling that he becomes one. He's had the fortune/misfortune playing behind Makar and Dahlin his entire career eating at his potential PP time to pick up points. None of us know what he's truly capable of if he's deployed in a #1 role getting top minutes and a decent chunk of O zone faceoffs. The conclusion here is that KD is thinking the only reason he's not a top pairing defenseman is that he's been stuck behind one. Let's see what he can do in the role. Another thing that nobody is talking about is that he can play both sides which adds a level of versatility to the core.

3. They still paid too much and would have been better off holding onto what they got: At least we can be confident they weren't bidding against themselves. That was the price they needed to pay to get Byram. Was it too high? Maybe. Probably still. I know I'll be furious on Friday if somehow Stenberg makes it to 4. But if McKenna, Stenberg, and Reid are all gone by 4, the question starts t become would I rather have Bowen Byram than Caleb Malhotra or Carson Carels? Think of these 2 questions:

Would I rather have Bowen Byram than 4OA? Oh god no.

Would I rather have Bowen Byram than Carson Carels? .....Maybe?????

In a vacuum, I think the answer is still probably no. But Caleb Malhotra is another center that we have plenty of and Carels, another defenseman, isn't likely to significantly contribute for at least 2 if not 3 years. We need the help now and have plenty of cap room. I've been saying for months that the young D playing together to end last season did not look good. You just can't have 6 guys out there all with less than 3 full years of experience. Sure you can sign a UFA for that, and I still think they will, but here's a chance to get a 25 year old potential top pairing guy. And that's what they did.

Losing Crevier sucks. But if Byram plays the right side or if they sign another RHD in UFA, where's he going to play? It's also possible that we sold high on him. I doubt that but we'll see how his career progresses somewhere else.

4. None of this helps Bedard: I mean not to the naked eye. But how many full shifts did we see Bedard spend chasing the puck in his own zone? This will help with that. Now it's true that we could have used what we gave up for a winger. But is it? Tkachuk wasn't coming here. I have no idea why Toronto would trade Knies for futures unless they're completely blowing it up. I am curious to see what happens with Robertson but I'd be shocked if KD hasn't checked in on that situation and already offered 4OA.

5. This is Seth Jones all over again: Kind of. They did offer quite a bit for a youngish and promising defenseman. The key difference is that was a desperate GM giving away any and all of the futures he had left to add to a core that was hanging on for one last breath to possibly make the playoffs. Then Seth Jones gets here, the season flops, a new GM comes in, sells everyone, the team sucks, and then Seth Jones, fair or not, is the symbol of that major flop. Byram is coming into a young up and coming team with plenty of talent and futures. I'm sure he's aware of the situation and I highly doubt KD is going to blow it up in Byram's face like he did to Jones.

The main question to this whole thing is will Byram become something he currently is not nor has shown compared to what will become of who is available at 4? You also need to consider how his presence may help everyone on the team right now.

Yeah and notice how I'm still the biggest fan of this trade

Crevier being the best D last season was an extremely low bar to clear because the blueline was garbage

Byram is an upgrade the likes of which this team hasn't seen in ages

You can also expect Vlasic to play way better now that he won't be tasked with being Chicago's #1

What does 2.5 years ago have to do with anything? You think players dont evolve or improve especially young d?
Exactly....Colorado made a bad assessment on MIddlestadt thinking he was a 60 point C that was about to blossom into a perfect fit for a team wanting to make a run at another Cup in desperate need of a 2C to have any chance. Colorado isn't trading Middlestadt for Byram with 2 years of hindsight.

Besides, we don't have the luxury of a Makar (or Dahlin) to either stand in his way or make him a grade a trade chip to even consider miving him.

People who have spent the most amount of time watching this draft are the ones that know the 4th overall pick has an inflated sense of values

The casuals are the ones balking
Yes almost all draft picks are overrated. It's nauseating.

The value of players playing well above their cap hits is seldom considered years ahead of time. For example, Bedard in year 6 is going to play way over his cap hit because his extension (hopefully it's 3 or more) covers multiple cost controlled years. It doesn't matter where the player fits skill wise, there's a huge AAV savings component that matters when a team is in a window. You lose that swapping about a 4 oa for a UFA unless the UFA is elite and can play to a massive cap hit.

How is it that this move inspires confidence? Anyone can make a trade if you just step up and offer the moon and the stars for a guy not worth that. Of course they would accept.

Confidence is inspired by making good value moves that also improve the roster. Not paying through the nose just to make sure you don’t have FOMO.
No kidding on the offer.

I'll add that if this inspired confidence, please explain what the hell they've been doing with defensemen the last 4 1/2 years?

Bedard is this rebuild. We don't have another 5yrs for this #4 pick to maturate. I am good with the trade. The only problem I will have is if they do not sign an extension. I couldn't imagine KD would make the trade without that.
Agreed that everything starts and ends with Bedard.
Agreed that a defenseman will take years.

I think they could address alot more with the 7 2nds, non tank 1sts, and cost controlled prospects, especially since they're still giving away capspace.

Yeah. Trade ups and high picks on D and they still haven't addressed Bedards line.

We know KD hates 2nds, and he has 6 to burn next 3 drafts, might be another one coming.
at this point he needs to go all out..you dont make a trade for Byram who is now owed a new contract that he now can basically control due to the nature of the trade and still have to pay Bedard. KD for all intensive purposes gave Bedard and Byram a free contract to name their price and sign it to whatever term they would like.

Did Byram not play the second most minutes in Buffalo? By definition, is that not a top pairing dman?

Seems like a stretch to claim he’s a second pairing guy. Draisaitl isn’t a second line center just because he plays there.

The bet is he becomes the outright number one guy. He’s already a top pairing guy.

I think Knies makes alot of sense as you said. I could see that happening based on what has been reported.

IDK about Robertson though, KD may have never gotten close on this one.

I think Chicago fans are getting ahead of themselves thinking Robertson would actually sign an offersheet or extension in Chicago since there seems to be so much interest around the league who can actually offer something better.
