That's awesome... i mean, seriously... that takes balls.

So he effectively said "I was referring to tard being the perfect way to end his name, because obviously that's exactly how his name ends. It's a very nice name, just like that."

more like..

"I've heard people insult each other using the term "tard" but I had no context for where the term comes from"

Pegula should hire some actual journalists to cover the Sabres. Give them an absurd amount of seed money, put a CEO in place who will promise to not be partial to the source of the funding, and go. Publish the news online, for free.

Would be hilarious.

Even for Mike, this is lowbrow.

I mean, I've long been convinced that he just goes with the fake Twitter persona, but this is too much.

Yes Mike we know the guy who let Deadspin readers vote is name Dan Le Batard. So you tweet:

" @BNHarrington Tard is a perfect way to end the name of the look-at-me specialist who sold his HOF vote to @Deadspin."

and then claim to not know from what word the insult "tard" is derived? And claim that you were making a point about his name? What point, then is being made?

"@BNHarrington Apologies for the last tweet as a couple point out. Frankly, never heard that context until a link was sent. Point was about the name."

This guy is pathetic. I wish this issue had some legs and Harrington would get fired, but I realize chances of that are slim to none.

I would think if he was actually going to try to make a point about the guy's name, maybe, if he's as smart as he seems to think he is, he might point out what "Le Batard" means in French

I'm never one to scream for someone to be fired. He said something dumb, and if saying something dumb got you fired, I'd be out of work twice a day. :p

If you said what he did you'd be harassing a peer over social media using a slur, though

I actually don't think he should be fired for what he said. I just want him to be fired because he's an arrogant a-hole.

He did post this on the BN

"A note of apology

January 8, 2014 - 6:35 PM

By Mike Harrington

While discussing the aftermath of today's Baseball Hall of Fame voting, I tweeted a comment about another voter's actions that included inappropriate and regrettable language.

As a parent of a special needs child, I am well aware of the daily challenges they and their families face. No one should demean them or what they go through.

My deepest apologies".

So he has a special needs child and didn't know what "tard" meant? Puh-lease.

It's even sadder that he's only apologizing, half-assed, about using that word. Not for insulting another journalist he disagrees with.

When I was 5 I called my grandmother a lesbian. Heard it on the bus and had no idea what it meant. Still got the belt, still got grounded. This is a grown man who is supposed to be qualified to conduct himself appropriately in a public medium, as his journalism degree should attest too. If nothing else I hope his new Sabres connection goes to someone else from now on.

It's not a "my black friend" argument when it's your own kid, though. Your kid. I didn't know that. I still think he was being unprofessional, but I could never hang the man over a term that only exists to hurt one of the dearest people in his world. That takes the incident, for me, from one of him being insensitive to one of him just being careless, and an apology is enough.

If he has a child with down syndrome and is throwing around that word publicly, hes pretty heartless. I have never met a person who had a special needs child or sibling that hated that word and urged others to stop using it.

You're far too free and certain with your condemnation.

I have multiple autistic, immediate family members that I would lay down my life for. I've used that word. In the right context (certainly not in the public sphere), I don't even regret it necessarily. It's not heartless. It's a word.

We live in a society that acculturates us to offensive language so that it becomes reflexive sometimes, where so much of our strong language is rooted in denigrating a group of people that it's easy to use a term without the specific malice originally intended for it. When you use language that insults another group of people directly without thinking about it, you should be rebuked. We should presume that, at best, you have insensitively chosen to ignore the way that group feels and suffers from prejudice. At worst, we should be wary of your actual malice.

When you use language that does the same thing to your own people, or to yourself, you should still be rebuked for your thoughtlessness, but I can't see imagining that you're insensitive to the pain of your own children, or that you have malice towards your own flesh and blood. It becomes a poor choice. It occupies a completely different context for me. It's something you should be reprimanded for, especially when it's in public like this, but in the sense that you're carelessly allowing other people to hear it and perhaps normalize the term where it should never be normalized. Not in the sense that you have actual cruelty in your heart.

In the end, we care about these words because of the intent reflected in them. They're not magic spells. I don't see a reason to presume his ill intent towards the mentally disabled anymore when I know he has a child with issues. He was careless, not cruel, and he apologized appropriately. That's it for me.

I don't know. At an early age, my son was thought to be autistic and/or mentally Pejorative Slured. It turns out that his development was impaired because he was nearly deaf. His eustachian tubes never formed properly causing fluid that would normally drain away to build up tremendous pressure against his ear drums, rendering him about 60% deaf. Just enough to be able to respond to noises etc, but not enough to hear the subtleties of language and sounds. Horrible speech impediment and wrongly thought to be Pejorative Slured or autistic - but ultimately "cured" when the problem was detected and surgically repaired.

With that experience my only one with a special needs situation and having had to haul my son to years of speech therapy, summer Special Ed summer classes and such, I would never dream of using the expression Harrington did. It does seem so heartless and insensitive. Maybe one builds up a tolerance over time?

I know he has a journalism degree, but it seems he has a masters level in d'baggery.
