man the thing is the stanley cup playoffs are really a bullshit tournament made up mostly of luck and matchups. Is your team mostly healthy? Did you get OK matchups? did you get some puck luck? did your goalie catch a lucky hot streak? congrats you got a good dchance at winning the cup

Did you own the shit out of all current analytics models and everyone say you're a cup favorite? Oh, did some other random team get "lucky" against you? tough shit, try again next year.

As a Florida fan. Opportunistic. Not lucky. Huge difference.
yea very much this! not like they're unbeatable or some crap, rangers got plenty of flaws like pretty much every team, but they're extremely good at having someone step up and making big or important plays. They're resiliant as hell. I dunno if it's enough to win the cup, I wouldn't be surprised if the fall short, but straight up stats/analytics aren't enough to decide how they're gonna do

Was there a thread like this for the Panthers last year for a WC2 team making the Stanley cup finals?

Whoops, won the Presidents trophy. Oopsie, 10 and 3 to start the playoffs.

They have a top 3 goalie and elite skill. They tend to get outshot a lot but that's just how they play. And they bury their chances more often than not. I don't think they're lucky to be in the position they're in right now.

Unless you wanna count lucky to have Igor, than sure.

We are lucky the panthers arent dying. Bennet, rodrigues efc. They all need prayers and help for the hits they are taking. So lucky they are alive.

And devils fans are lucky. They already won the cup this year.

No, they have the best goalie in the league.

That said, they were awful today and definitely fortunate to win that one.

Weren't FLA and CAR considered two Cup favorites? FLA is easily the best team in the Atlantic.
*Checks previous Rangers/Canes playoff matchup
*Checks regular season standings
*Checks this year's Rangers/Canes playoff matchup
*scratches head in confusion

Edit: not trying to say you're wrong. Just how wild it is that Canes were favored.

Vegas odds had Canes as cup favorites.

If Rangers were getting outplayed and scoring flukey goals there'd maybe be an argument for Rangers and luck. But Rangers are winning in the playoffs exactly how they won the President's trophy in the regular season: play the rope-a-dope, allow as much perimeter shots and outside edge zone time as the other teams want, and then bury quality chances when they get them.

Vegas odds had Canes as cup favorites.
Yeah, that was my point. Rangers keep getting disrespected and people keep saying they're 'done' and all they do is keep winning.

Rangers play very opportunistic hockey. They have not really scored lucky or soft goals this series. It could be argued the goals that have been scored this series Florida has been luckier with bounces or own goals. Don’t think they are lucky either they just work hard and throw pucks that have a good chance of being deflected.

Has New York has been the luckiest team these playoffs? No disrespect this is a hell of team that finds ways to capitalize on their chances but let’s be honest with all the OT wins they’ve been very lucky. Just like Florida last year.
Who cares.

No team in NHL history has won a Cup without being lucky.

I’ve never understood why having an elite goaltender win games is called luck and stealing a game while having an elite forward or D win games is considered having the better team.
For some reason HF posters don’t consider a goaltender An actual member of the team and rather his own entity

Lucky? Maybe at times but really that's the hallmark of a good team, managing to squeeze out wins out of games you "should" lose. They've been clutch. Getting goaltending ranging from good to great every game helps.
