Has Marner priced himself out of Toronto already?

Does he sign for 3-4 years? 5? Longer term? That's what I'm thinking now really, no longer "is Toronto going to sign him?". My guess is he'll take an 8 year deal with Toronto at $12.5M to get that $100M deal and staying in his hometown. Good luck to Leafs as this will likely happen before playoffs too.

Even if they can afford to pay him, the better question is should they? Likely Tavares will be willing to re-sign and maybe for a good deal to guarantee he can retire a Leaf. Maybe at the deadline they can trade him for something, especially with retention, and get multiple useful pieces back (likely futures) that maybe they can then also deal for two or more good role players.

I don't think the Leafs care about Marner's regular season stats. They've seen it for 9 years now.

Marner's lack of scoring ability hinders him in the playoffs, and will likely continue to hinder him unless he ever decides to improve his shot.

If he wants 14M+, I'm genuinely curious if any team in the league would offer him that. This is the player claiming he was turning down offersheets to stay with the Leafs his last contract.

Priced himself out of Toronto and then signs 9-10 mill deal with another team Mitchy Marner probably wins the cup.

Toronto has 3 of the best players in the league. It is very simple, those players get paid.

You can hate Toronto all you want but the fact is, there is not a GM in the NHL that does not pay him $11M AAV.
So he would accept a 0.8% raise ?

If so, please tell him i've got a great bridge to sell...

I heard that the Leafs were able to get permission from the Pens to sign Dubas to a one day contract just to re-sign Marner for 14 mil per

I think you have to chance it with somebody as talented as Marner, the problem is that trading him to another contender at the deadline does nothing for us. We might be able to get some good-great draft picks, but they are in all likelihood 2-4 years away from having real impact in the NHL, at that point Matthews/Nylander and Rielly will probably have declined and the team won't be great anyways.

You just treat Mitch as a self rental and hope he finally figures it out in the playoffs. If not, you can sign or trade or let him walk, all options are equally valid using different types of strategies. But there's no point in trading him now.

When JT sees his buddy Stammer sign 8 x 4, why would he think he should earn less? I guess only if Toronto is his only team he would play for. On the open market, why is JT worth less than Stamkos at the same age?
Stamkos probably would have given the Bolts a pretty good discount if they had asked.

Marner has been the Leafs best player this year. Cap set to increase significantly in the next few years, they will have to pay him 13+ mil to stay. Maybe even more if he has a strong playoffs.
