Has Marner priced himself out of Toronto already?

He will stay if the Leafs want to keep him, money isn't an issue there. Tavares is the bigger question.

Do they want him? Does he want to stay? Is he willing to take a substantial pay cut to make it happen?

Since they already paid him so much in his last contract they only need to give him around 1 million as a raise, shouldnt be a big problem. On the other hand if another team wanted to sign him they would have to clear 12+ million in cap space, that would be quite difficult.

I could see a 8x12M contract. If he wants to ruin his relationship with his childhood team over 1M extra per year go for it. He has the ability to be paid handsomely for his talents and not drag his name through the mud again.

Let's see if he's matured at all or if he will skill let agents and family members whisper in his ear.

The Leafs are quite happy to have a top-heavy cap structure. They've proven that for years. The only forwards on the roster that get paid between 1.5 and 10 million are Domi, Kampf, and Jarnkrok. The latter 2 of those guys are losing their spots to younger players right now, and will probably be jettisoned. Toronto has no fear of paying for the stars, and filling the rest of the forward group with whoever else fits.

They'll pay whatever it takes to keep him, and I think he'll be a bit more reasonable in negotiation that some of the publicized estimates.

Plus Toronto will front-load the contract, pay most in bonuses, and do some deferred shenanigans to make every dollar count. He'll be well compensated on his next contract, which will undoubtedly be with Toronto.

Yea, because they are dumb. Having this much money tied up in Willy and Marner is incredibly stupid. They ain't winning shit. Sell a ton of jerseys, though.

That might be the case. I won't argue it here. But this isn't a thread about what Toronto should do, or if they are better off to move Marner.

The thread asks if he's priced himself out of Toronto, and the objective answer is unquestionably "no". There's nothing to suggest that both sides aren't totally happy and willing to make an extension work. Everything suggests they're willing and able to keep him, in spite of any perceived price increase because of his recent play.

When JT sees his buddy Stammer sign 8 x 4, why would he think he should earn less? I guess only if Toronto is his only team he would play for. On the open market, why is JT worth less than Stamkos at the same age?
My gut says JT is all about the team and this core

I swear Leafs Nation was 99.9% onboard with trading Mitch after the loss to the Bruins.
The worst thing that could happen is Mitch leads you guys in scoring to a Conf Finals appearance.

Marner didn't take a hometown discount last time, and he sure as shit won't take one this time either.

You're going to be paying him $14m. Same as Draisaitl.

Yzerman's salivating at the thought of giving JT an 8x8
lol no one is giving him 8x8
Wait if one team would it would be the leafs.

Regarding Marner, they screwed themselves by not moving him before NMC.
Now they are forced to sign him, at the rate leafs pay all their stars, or let him walk for free.

They may pressure him at TDL to sign a deal, if not tell him he’s gone in the summer, to apply pressure.

Teams are already sold on his regular season success. He will get paid based on his playoff numbers this year

His price will be determined by his playoff performance

Also JT/Marner are both coming off the books, that's 22M, so even if he wins the Conn Smythe he wouldn't be "Priced out"

Expecting a stronger playoff from him, he's changed his game completely under Berube. He's getting into dirty area, fighting, not only is he getting in scrums he's initiating them and driving plays. The most noticeable change to me has been his movement, I think training with Crosby/Mackinnon is paying off. His feet are constantly moving, he's always skating when he's with the puck. He doesn't float with speed/momentum, he's driving and moving his feet, creating lots of space.

He's having a great season, but again his price will be determined after the playoffs. If he leaves Toronto it won't be cause the Leafs can't afford him.

You confident they'll let him get to the TDL without a deal?
Hundred percent, I think he goes to UFA and then re-signs. He's a Leafs fan and if he's betting on himself for a payday, he'll get the most in FA.

It's hard to overstate how badly Treliving has fumbled the major decisions for Toronto.

Paid at the absolute peak price for Nylander. He's kicked the bucket on Marner so now his decision is either 1. Let him walk, or 2. Pay an inflated price.

Not to mention wasting more piles of cap space on Reaves, Domi, etc....
