Wow. I was thinking more in the 2010-2017 era that he played like that. I can’t help but feel that if that continued refs kind of considered him to be grandfathered into that style and continued to let it go since they did throughout his prime.

1. Rule change that diving infractions are 4 minutes so when refs call both, teams are punished for diving.

2. DOPS to take diving more seriously and start enforcing progressive fines that lead into suspensions. The fact that we can list a handful of players such as Stutzle known to be falling all over the ice every game and he gets nothing said to him can only be taken as endorsement.

I'd go the opposite direction. Institute a 1 min penalty the refs can call in conjunction with legitimate instigating penalties and I believe the refs would call embellishment more.

And distinguish between "embellishment" (response to a legitimate foul against to draw attention to the foul, 1 minute penalty) and "diving" (faking a reaction when there is no instigating foul, 2 minutes or even more).

The officials refuse to call anything unless someone is flopping around on the ice like a fish, so they incentivize it. Playing "through" abuse is no longer good enough. Fix that, and diving will decrease substantially.

The game is so fast it's next to impossible to catch everything on the ice. Take one official off the ice and put him in a video booth where he can see and call obvious penalties that are missed on the ice. It would take just a bit for the players to adjust, but I don't think it would take them too long to realize that they can't get away with a lot of the stuff they used to and would adjust their play accordingly.

there are players that make it a regular part of their game like stutzle and kadri but it's always been there. the problem is the refs are too reluctant to call it. id like to see the league review the call afterwards and start issuing suspensions with increasing severity for repeat offenders.

I hate diving as much as the next person, but I don't think it has been normalized. It has been at about this level for years now. Players know that refs watch game tape and learn who the divers are, which usually results in less calls from certain refs involving certain players.

Sure, there some punks who continue to dive, but most players are too proud to engage in diving. Also, a lot of times people think a player dives when it's not a dive. There is no one right way to fall at high speed even when slightly tripped or knocked off balance. I'm not saying diving never occurs, rather pointing out that fans seem to think more things are dives than actually are,

I'll start worrying about it when it approaches soccer level.

Haven't seen anything even close to a dive for a long time now as he got the message loud and clear not to embellish.

I do agree that “diving” is relatively rare compared to “embellishment”, where the players want to make sure the ref sees the infraction.

In some cases, they commit an infraction themselves, like holding on to a stick that was briefly hooking them.

People complain a lot about snapping heads from high sticks near their face, but it’s pretty hard to control that flinching reaction when a blade flies up an inch away into your line of sight.

Embellishment comes in cycles it seems, the refs season to season for some reason seem to be focused on different penalties.

For the fans and I imagine the players it’s hard to figure out wtf is going on.

Add the speed, how much the players themselves can police what happens on the ice and we get some really weird calls or non calls.

Also some players get a reputation and can get away with playing over the line or never get calls there way.

God I love this sport.

This is very true. Still a lot that are very questionable though.

Also, call more instigation penalties when people are forced to fight after clean hits for the love of god.
