Speculation: Has Adam Oates Been Fired Yet???? How about now?

Really hope Columbus beats Pittsburgh and the Capitals can get Bylsma.

Pens fan coming in peace.

If you want your new coach to be a guy who mishandles your lines by putting square pegs in round holes, a coach who doesn't adjust whatsoever to any adversity presented to his team by the opposition, a coach who doesn't play your better, younger players over your old grinders, and a coach who is all about "grinding" and forcing every one of your skill players to dumb their skill down in order to be more like the Craig Adamses of the world...then by all means, take Bylsma now. You'll quickly see why most of us smart Pens fans would get rid of him in a heartbeat.

But your team is successful. We said the same things about BB (minus the grinding part) yet he found ways to win games. While it didn't get it done in the playoffs, winning games is more then we can say we do now...

Most nights, we win in spite of coaching. The pure talent of Crosby and Malkin takes over many games a year.

Looking from the outside, this season may have looked like a regular season success, but the way we've played down the stretch is definitely causing many of us to be worried going into the playoffs, and the constant is that the games we're dropping are because of more of the same...lack of coaching adjustments. He's one of the most stubborn coaches around.

With Bylsma in, Ovie may win you guys some games on his own, in spite of Bylsma. That's not what the Caps need obviously. You guys need a coach who is going to bring the team together. Bylsma isn't that guy.

Bylsma walked into the perfect position. He has probably the most talented player on his team as well as another that is top 5. Add to that, the team's captain actually wants to lead the team. They have a team identity unlike our own team.

No thanks on Bylsma. No thanks on Laviolette for that matter. Definitely a no thanks on Tortarella when he gets dumped as well. I don't want a coach who have made their name on the backs of the worlds most talented players (I don't know who I want honestly).

I would prepare for the coaching staff's status to be unresolved until a new GM is brought on board (if indeed that comes to pass). Oates only gets fired over the next few days IMO if either the coaching staff burned their bridges with ownership/mgmt. or there's a player revolt against the coaching staff in their exit interviews. Otherwise I'd guess that decision will be put off...and hopefully not something ownership determines so as to handcuff a potential replacement GM.

McPhee always talks during final media day so maybe he'll break the news himself tomorrow. He's not one to typically talk about his status but I don't know that he'll be able to skirt the issue entirely. I think we'll be able to read between the lines at least.

We're ****ed.

I saw that yesterday, no way he means that. he said right after that if upper management wants to change its up to them to make the change, not on the players? I read that in two ways, one he was stating that he wants a new GM and Coach/shake up, or two it means ****ing nothing and gmgm and Oates are extended 6 years each and I have no idea what i'm doing, i don't want to live on this planet anymore.

i'll probably snap if they keep Oates.

In this article he responds "Yeah" to the question of whether he wants Oates back. There are also comments praising Oates from Alzner and Brouwer.

Then there's this:

http://www.csnwashington.com/hockey...etter-ive-got-get-better?p=ya5nbcs&ocid=yahoo

“It’s a funny thing,†he said. “While I’m waiting to talk to you guys, the Masters is on and they’re talking about Tiger Woods changing his golf swing, right?

“The best golfer in the world is changing his golf swing. You’ve got to work on your game. They’ve got to get better. I’ve got to get better. You meet in the middle.â€

Really? When has Oates compromised? Does he realize that Tiger has changed his swing most recently because his previous swing was causing or exacerbating career-threatening injuries? Would Oates' handedness obsession be similarly subject to change if it's found that it doesn't work like he thinks it does, and is holding the team back? What about his other theories, including his aversion to motivation?

I've got a bad feeling about this.

oates may have burned bridges. the coaching STAFF was following directions. I doubt that Calle and Olie burned squat.

I imagine they all go in one form or another but I would not be surprised to find Oates the only one fired. The other two reassigned. the third guy seems to be someone everyone likes. I am fairly sure he hasn't burned anything either.

For me GMGM is the biggest problem - biggest by far. We won't win the Cup next year, with or without Oates, so if he stays one more year, I don't see it as a big problem. And if he curbs his incredible arrogance, he can actually evolve into a decent coach.

Of course, I'm in the minority on this, I know.

what Ovechkin is saying without saying it is this:

"Our team sucks...you know that we know that, Oates knows that...who makes the team? The coach? The players? Let's make sure we actually get the right guy this time around."

I think the players are tired of the revolving door coaches and would prefer stability with a competent GM.

Ovi was smart enough to not answer NO when asked about wanting Oates back. Can you imagine the firestorm it would have created answering Yes?

Coach Killer blah blah it would be a national headline in Canada in the middle of the playoffs.

While I am nervous Oates gets retained heck George too, I feel like its time. The fans yesterday cheering until the end, may have fooled Ted, but I doubt it. If anything, seeing the loyal fans should make him act even sooner.

I meant to add this take to my post as well.

Ovie seemed like he was trying to be political while punting the question because get out of my face it's over and I'm tired of talking about it and where's my Richard Trophy.

The quotes from the other players bother me more.

edit: as I said previously, people will call him a coach killer if Oates is fired no matter what he says. But yes, better to not add to that.

I am not nervous at all. Oates and GMGM are toast. 100%

The thing I am nervous about is the rest of the festering front office (Patrick) that maybe retained. THAT is the real worry.

GMGM was not extended for a reason and that was before he missed the playoffs.

Ted read that post article and responded to it. He knows what the fans and media feel. The fact that he said the criticism is justified leads me to believe at least a good share is on Oates.

But he won't fire Oates I don't think. The new GM will. Thats how it probably should be done anyhow.

It would have been awesome to see a Bring Back Dave Prior sign yesterday.

Well, I have to eat crow. I always say making the playoffs is simple as pie. I do not watch the standings since Stevens comments after getting eliminated in the first round after a strong first place finish 20+ years ago.

However, missing the playoffs remains a testament to how horrible George and Adam have been.

You're way too optimistic Bob. My gut feeling tells me Ted retains George at the very least.

After I saw McKenzie and Dreger discuss this (at the time we were still in the playoff hunt) it made me believe 100% he is gone if we don't make the playoffs.

Again..to recap...its unique that a GM goes into a season as a "lame duck". Ownership usually extends 1 year and then makes a decision at the end of the year.

The fact that Ted and Co. did not extend him is very telling based on what they said.

Now we miss the playoffs....if anything GMGM is 100% gone. There is a chance Oates can survive depending on the new GM. 50/50 is the rest of the crew upstairs.

The most likely scenario imo is GMGM walks away and a new GM keeps Oates to at least start his final contract year, but is also looking for replacement candidates in case a move needs to be made.

I personally think Oates is a disaster and is more wrong than right. I think he should be fired asap. But I don't know that it will play out that way.

At the very least a new GM will want to come in and pick Oates' brain and talk to all the players, and then see how things operate from there. The only way Oates goes in this scenario is if the review is incredibly unfavorable or if Ted calls the shot. Neither of those is likely.
