I watch the third period and saw the replays of the earlier goals. Pack played a good game. The Carpenter-Elson-Reuschhoff line remained hot with two goals from Carpenter. Trivigno very active with the two assists. Pajuniemi didn't hit the score sheet but was very physical and had several good chances. Whenever I watch Henriksson he always makes a couple of good plays. I'll be interested to see if his scoring picks up in the second half.

With the score tied 2-2 heading into the 3rd, a double minor results in a 4-4. Trivigno and Emberson do some good work to set up Jones who is all alone in the slot for a score. Then a couple of minutes later Reuschhoff makes a good play to keep the puck in the zone and gets it to Elson in the corner who finds Carpenter for the winning goal. The Pack gave up a goal with four minutes left on a 3-2 but hold off the Islanders who take two penalties in the last two minutes to lose any chance of scoring the tying goal.

The team is playing better going 5-5 in the last ten and are now only 6 points behind 4th place Charlotte. The offense has picked up. Ironically, the team has played better without several of the veterans -- Brodzinski called up, Smith, Gettinger and Whelan injured -- and the youngsters getting more of an opportunity, particularly Trivigno, Pajuniemi and Reuschhoff. Carpenter has been very effective at the AHL level and his line is scoring and working well together. Emberson is showing more offensive ability. I'm not sure he's an NHL defenseman but his play has picked up.

Tough on Garand doing his first full AHL season at just 20 years old, hopefully it doesn’t kill his confidence, going to be many a long nights for him this season.

Nice to see that he has shown the ability to have to some good starts sprinkled in.

It's a bummer because the Rangers really need him for next season to save money, however that's not where his development is and you can't force him to be ready like that. It may take another year and a half to two seasons.

Even if Garand was tearing it up, I wouldn't be in a hurry to promote him. He needs to play games. Next season he should get the lion's share in the AHL.

There will be guys available for under 1 mil. They may not be very good, but you get what you pay for. Hopefully Benoit can work his magic and coax a decent year out of him. We've got Domingue for another year, so he's always an option as well. Boyko will probably be in the ECHL and Lindbom could move up to the AHL alongside Garand. Ollas is probably a 3 or 4 year college guy, so we'll have to wait to see what he can do as a pro.

There will be cheap (sub-$1M) backup G options that should be perfectly fine. Some possible names are Raanta, Greiss, Rittich, and Hellberg. Are they world-beaters? No, but they're all better options than Halak. Rarely do goalies come in on their ELC as impact players unless they've spent years developing overseas. Garand is 20. Igor was 23 when he signed his ELC.

We traded away pretty much nothing to bring in Raanta, they signed a young undrafted Alex Georgiev 5 years ago from the Liiga. Hopefully Drury and Co have their fingers on the pulse elsewhere. Some really good goalie prospects have come through SKA in the KHL lately. Dimitri Nikolayev is a 22 year old UDFA, playing almost Igor-like for SKA right now. He is still signed for another 2 years though. Maybe there's an option to get out of that contract. It'd be a smart choice to poach some UDFA goalies. These guys will come in on ELCs, can't get much cheaper than that.

Anyone know what Beat writers are covering the following teams?

HFD Wolfpack, Springfield Falcons, Bridgeport and Providence Bruins?
He's not a professional but on Twitter you can follow Ricky Milliner for decent HFD coverage. Mitch Beck and Gerry Cantlon who write at Howlings.net used to have the best coverage around but they don't do anything on Twitter and Howlings seems to go extended periods without being updated. They also still cover random teams like Greenville even though they're no longer affiliated with the Rangers.

Alex Thomas is the PBP person but they don't provide much other than official team releases and all that.

Also on Twitter, re Pack, greg markiewicz, but also, like Howlings, much less often than he used to
Ahh right, I forgot all about Greg. I think I unfollowed him a long time ago after he tweeted some political stuff. Which is cool, I don't tweet about hockey anymore, I just wasn't a fan of his takes LOL.

Was able to take in HFD vs SPFD tonight. T Birds win 2-1 in shootout. Feel like I watched a Jr high soccer game - lots of activity but nothing.
Not sure what Drury and Ryan Martin are trying to accomplish. A highly ineffective series of possession exchanges tonight.
I understand a typical hockey game involves anywhere between 400-600 possession changes, with only a couple leading goals. Tonight's game was horrible. I'm surprised any goals were scored.

Pack responding to their attrition at F,
by trading D man Luke Martin for LW Ben Tardif

Martin had been at Jax,
to start season, Pack had multiple F's at Jax,
but Whelan, DiGiacinto, Ryan Lohin, have all been recalled, Zach Jordan too, but sent back recently

Tardif may end up there, too, but press release has him reporting to Pack

I don't watch Jacksonville (or even Hartford) but I wondered if Martin was a guy the organization wanted to do something with, pretty high draft pick to be hanging out down there

He went unsigned, after college, to be one of those August 15th UFAs (vesey, hayes, gilmour, kerfoot, .. ) (drafted guys whose rights expired aug 15th after their NCAA commitment/eligibility expires)
most get that far because drafting team lost interest
In Martin's case, he didnt get a pro deal until an ECHL deal in Dec
In 2+ seasons since, just 6 AHL games each season before this
So NYR mighta hoped for a lightning strike, but more realistically just AHL depth
