How does this team look on defense? Are they structured?
I need to start watching games. I'd like to see Shesty in action along with Rykov and Kravtsov.
Seems like a pretty decent structure. Lots of 5 guys in the picture. They keep it simple. Are pretty disciplined as far as shift length. Very good puck support in the D zone. So, when their D make a mistake there's usually another player there to support.
They are not the most skilled team. And as a result are a bit more boring at times. For instance, no one seems capable of taking advantage of playing with Kravtsov as none of them process the offensive side as fast as VK. Their PP has been reduced to Lettieri one-timers. Overall, they're solid if not a bit uncreative. But that feels par for the course at this level.
Shesty also processes the game at a higher level than anyone else. And his movements are precise, powerful and quick. He's got more quick-twitch than any NYR goalie right now. He's outshined Huska by a bunch and Huska has been solid.
Rykov is solid at this level. Not dominant. But reliable. He uses his size and frame well. He's got decent agility and decent vision. He's on the 2nd PP unit. His weakness is explosiveness. If he falls behind the play, he's not necessarily catching people from behind which makes me wonder if he'll end up playing a very conservative game at the next level. Keane's a faster skater and takes the body pretty well for his size. Though, he seems less noticeable than he was at the start of the season.
Kravtsov -- by the nature of his position he's not as dominant as Chytil was in the A. As a winger VK has to rely often on the D or Cs to get him the puck in transition. In addition, Chytil is a bit more of a bull who barreled through teams. Whereas VK is a winger and a little bit more of a finesse player and a passer. His vision is something else. I can see him having great chemistry with Fox one day. His D since coming back has been solid. He's been persistent and used his body and stick well. He does get knocked around a little along the walls from time to time. He needs to grow into his frame more. But from a pure hustle standpoint and getting his nose dirty -- it's all good. If the Rangers were smart, at some point they'd make him watch hours of Elias Pettersson tape. Their games are similar in some ways and I think Kravtsov could learn some tricks in regards to driving the play a bit more.
