I've watched parts of most the HWP games. A few thoughts.
- Someone brought up the idea of moving Lias to the Wing. I think that might be a good idea at some point. He plays a fairly responsible game (if uneventful). I feel like putting him on the wing and telling him he needs to be first man in on the forecheck might force him into a more straight line approach. He's not a bad passer, is not a terrible stickhandler, but his lack of separation speed (even at times in the A) and confidence is preventing him from being a better facilitator or more dangerous in general. In some ways, he's the exact opposite of Chytil. Chytil will hold the puck and try to skate around, bull rush players, sometimes at the expense of facilitating. Lias, perhaps because of foot speed, perhaps because of being rushed to the NHL too soon, tries to move the puck as quickly as possible. This is why playing for a long while in the A is appropriate for his development. He needs to find a better balance to his offensive approach. And it's all about finding time and space and confidence. Sadly (or maybe better for him) I think Lias will get moved because his development curve feels like it's better served by playing in the A for another season and a half. Once he develops into full man strength and continues to work on his foot speed, there will likely be a role for him. But I don't it's any time soon. And it's unclear if he'll stay in NA long enough to carve it a bottom six spot.
- Rykov. He shows flashes of good vision. He's a big body. He's good at using it to shield the puck. He's also good at defending. Where he seems to struggle is he occasionally gets caught mis-reading a play or is flat footed. He's a decent skater, he's got interesting agility, but he is not fast enough to recover once he loses the puck at the blue line. He's kinda like Staal in that regard. This is either rust or just something a part of the game he will have to minimize. He's also pretty sharp with his passing, but I have seen him make some bad turnovers on outlet passes. I think he will be an NHL player, but he's going to need to play a safer game. I honestly think if the Rangers played a more defensively tight system he would thrive. The system they play right now may expose Rykov's weaknesses more than on say, the Kings.
- Fogarty is really peaking.
- with the addition of Kravtsov, the Wolf Pack will finally have a decent pool of legit prospects playing down there. Kravtsov, Andersson, Rykov, Keane, Shesterkin, Huska and to a lesser extent Gettinger and Jones.
- Finally, as for Keane, the thing that separates him from a guy like John Gilmour is that he manages to create offense without being a defensive liability. He plays a smart game, not overly physical and does fairly well at separating players from the puck. In some ways, he sorta reminds me of Kevin Lowe.
