He is just not a very talented hockey player,...I don’t think he gives you what you want as a coach... I am not surprised at all that he is cut at the AHL level.
.... it’s so much of a thinking game, it’s so much about being able to react fast and cover — short — distances fast and so forth. Day can cover long distances fast, but he isn’t overly smart or quick etc.

Maybe there can be some positive side effects to this, with everyone being a bit more patient with things.
He have been able to study the game in the AHL the last months and listen to the coaches etc.

Day is still only 21, and only 81 games into his pro career.
I am one of those guys who some posters will dismiss, i will wait out his full ELC before labeling him a bust.

I do wish a had more clarity whether Maine staff can help him along,
maybe CHRDANHUTCH or Ranger Ric, or someone can talk to that.

I am fan of Jeff Taylor, saw him play well for Union, 2d pair minutes as freshman on a NCAA title team.

But is disappointing (and, yes, telling) that coach KK and Murphy (with Drury's blessing) has played Taylor (and 2 other guys on AHL deals,) (and very often 4 RHD in games), over playing and coaching Day.

His arc has been a yo-yo since being drafted.
Regular ice-time in Maine may have him best ready for a return to HWP, once inevitable injuries and changes impact HWP and NYR.

There's no denying he has slid down the depth chart, behind Hajek, Lindgren, Rykov, Tarmo, then Miller and Robertson due by fall (spring ATO's even)'21, and even Gross not unlikely in spring/fall'20

The thing with Taylor over Day and any number of other things, is that (and I know you know this) the AHL isn't purely a developmental league. It comes up in all the AHL vs European League X discussions, where people say the AHL is just there for developmental purposes. It's a pro league in its own right, and both coaches and players feel pressure to win. Guys make entire careers of playing in the league. So for Day, while the Rangers obviously would like to see Day turn into something, they don't seem inclined to demand he (or really anyone) play over superior players, just in the name of development. In the AHL, it still has to be earned.

That said, while I have spoken harshly of Day at various points, I agree that he should not be written off. He could be a Junior in college at this point had he taken a different path. 21 is not that old for anyone, particularly a defenseman. While it's troubling he can't win a spot in Hartford right now, he could still take a few steps forward and eventually make the NHL around 24. It's not unheard of.

you guys are more in tune with the Pack, cwede, then we are aligned with the Mariners, it wasn't 4 years ago that the two played against each other in the same division

Yeah, but one thing, I don’t at all think Day is demoted because he is dodging it or doesn’t care or whatever. He isn’t deemed to be top 6, that is what it is.

But of course, the kid is still young.

My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that while the Rangers have an agreement with Maine, Maine is independently run. Maine also has a secondary agreement with the Montreal AHL team in Laval. And I think most of the team is made up of players signed by Maine with no connection either to the Rangers/Hartford or Montreal/Laval. So there are players from both organizations although more from the Rangers. Maine will play the Rangers/Hartford players because it will want to keep the Rangers happy but it's not like the Maine is using Ranger strategies the way Hartford would.

Day had an excellent short time in Maine last year even being selected to the ECHL all star game. So he will get a chance to play but he already proved last year he can play very well at the ECHL level. The bigger issue was after a strong second half of the year last year in Hartford why he wasn't able to take advantage of the chance he got in Hartford at the beginning of the year to build on his game. While I was with Cwede on Day's prospects I am very disappointed in his performance this year. The only question I have is whether his hip injury is affecting his play.
