Prospect Info: Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL)/Maine Mariners (ECHL) Thread: Part XI

That was an interesting read on JD about Hartford. Very good to know that they're narrowing options down on a coach that "doesn't need to have prior NHL experience". Glad to see he wants a mix. Could Mark Letestu be brought in for help?

Letestu is a ufa so it’s possible

Charlotte Checkers (Canes) are 1 win away from winning the calder cup. just realized that they have an old friend on the team...former rangers 1st round pick Bobby Sanguinetti ask bobby pasta. had no idea he was even still playing

Also, ex-Ranger pick Aleksi Saarela. He's killing it too!!

Saarela is weird because he's been very productive in the AHL and hasn't even been given a cup of coffee. I remember reading the Canes disliked something about him, but don't remember details. Wonder if he leaves when his ELC expires.

Saarela actualy got a game in this years playoff for the big club. But his stats looks like he deserves more.

Was one of the first guys sent down in camp. Word is that Brindy didn’t like his preparation and effort, particularly on the defensive side of things. His skating wasn’t great (not speed, more strength on his skates).

That said, seems to have really put in the work in Charlotte and Vellucci has been positive about him. He’s got an NHL shot. Question is will he be able to find space and get it off in the NHL.

Carolina has quite a lot in Charlotte--youth, 1st and 2nd rounders--Necas, Gauthier, Bean, Fleury, Kuokkanen, McKeown-- a couple guys who are not that old but have a lot of NHL experience--McKegg, Jurco--good goaltending, toughness. Players have their roles--a guy like Patrick Brown gets called up to the NHL during the playoffs because they know what kind of a player he is--that he will fit into a role--so they don't necessarily bring up a big scorer when they want someone for grunt work. Carolina was like that too--their 3rd/4th liners aren't there necessarily to outskill other teams--they're there to outwork them. That's kind of what Boston and St. Louis are doing too.

To compare to our situation, when was the last time we had a 'Necas' in Hartford? and not in a "Andersson/Chytl sent down on a Conditioning Stint" way, but a legit 'lets place a prospect there and let him play there all year. let him be an AHLer' way.

Necas, Saarela, and Bean all were full-time, "not getting pulled up and down all year" AHLers this season.

Historically, we haven't done that. Either we let them stay in Europe, or we have them healthy-scratched in the NHL. It always seems like the AHL is always a second thought to this organization.

I would argue Chytil in his first season with the org.

andersson and chytil spent almost the entire season in the AHL 2 years ago

Mostly the Europeans can develop just as well in Europe--and partly that is because the Hartford franchise has been a trainwreck for a long time. Really though if the Rangers hadn't been selling off futures for several years running--players like Chytil, Andersson and Howden and probably Pionk too would have spent more time in Hartford. If those players were in Carolina's organization last year instead of ours they would have probably spent almost all of it in Charlotte. Instead Chytial, Andersson, Howden and Pionk are up with the Rangers because the big team has holes to fill however ready those guys are to fill them. Sometimes players are where they are because their team has no one better and no other real options.
 
i'd expect alot more key prospects to be in hartford this year...whether its fixed or not. the number of guys we have is going to force it

A lot of key prospects this year? Maybe you have a different definition of "key prospect" than I or most do.

Let's look at the current non-NHL roster players signed by the Rangers that are probably going to be in the AHL for parts/most of next year, as anyone who signs just an AHL contract is not going to be a key prospect for the Rangers:
Meskanen - not key
Kravstov - key
Elmer - unknown
Gropp - not key
Newell - unknown
Ronning - not key
Leedahl - not key
Fontaine - not key
Gettinger - not key
Fogarty - not key
Lettieri - not key
Rykov - more key than not as of right now
Lindgren - not key
Reunanen - Liiga
Keane - not key
Crawley - not key
Day - not key
Raddysh - not key
Bergman - Sweden
O'Gara - UFA gone not key
Bigras - RFA but not key
Gilmour - UFA gone not key
Huska - not key
Shestyorkin - key
Nell - lol
Halverson - lol
Tokarski - UFA not key

I even hesitate on Shesty b/c goalies are voodoo. No one else on the reserve list is signing this year, more than likely. So this list is pretty much it for prospects in the AHL.

Where is this "a lot" of key prospects? Majority of these guys aren't "key" to anything in the NHL.

EDIT: Forgot Hajek who is legit, and I don't think Fox is HFD bound.

I don't think it would have hurt for all of Chytil, Lias and Howden to spend most of last year in the AHL. More similar to Hajek and Lindgren.

They could have used some combo of Holland, Fogarty, Beleskey, Lettieri in the NHL often enough to let all three rookies start the year in the AHL and stay there until near/past the trade deadline.

I'm not sure if they feared having them in the AHL, or if they wanted to show they were rebuilding at the NHL level, or if they thought Quinn was better for them than the AHL, yet regardless of the reasoning now both Lias and Chytil have burned a season which will count towards their UFA status starting at age 26 instead of age 27. There must have been some reasoning for them to decide on allowing for that.
