SOMEHOW, Someway, Mariners need help from the opponents of the Beast to make it..... Worcester is likely done after a 4-2 loss on to Manchester...

Maine needs to win out, and hope Toledo damages Brampton's run tonight

Hartford had the shit kicked out of them by Utica, 4-0. Huska stopped 27/30. Elmer had 4 shots. Newell had just 1. The team only had 21 shots total.

Maine lost last night, so they are locked out of a playoff spot after being in playoff position for most of the year. Here's the primary reason why:

Halverson: 2.67 GAA, .924sv%
Nell: 4.16 GAA, .882sv%

Yeah Nell blows ass. And didn't they lose Lacouvee for a large portion, too?

If they're smart, the don't qualify Nell, qualify Halverson (for ECHL Maine and AHL emergency call-up).

Quite the feat for the NYR organisation... all 3 teams, NYR, Pack and Maine, miss the playoffs... speaks volumes of the state of this organisation.

Laval recalled LaCouvee for good about a week after the Pack recalled Halverson. To make matters worse, thinking they would be okay with a tandem of LaCouvee/Nell down the stretch, the Mariners released Hannu Toivionen so he could finish the season in Finland.

Until the Mariners were able to sign Brassard out of college near the end of the season, the Mariners' tandem was Chris Nell with Ed Minney (5.82 GAA, .828SV%) up from the SPHL.

Pack up 4-2 after two periods now. Fogarty with two goals and Dmowski with the other. Gropp, Gilmour, McBride and Lettieri picking up assists. Dmowski has been pretty good all in all. A goal and two assists + 16 SOG in 6 games and 2 periods so far.
Fogarty up to 21 goals and 50 points now. He's had a great year.

Pack ended up winning 6-2. Dmowski's goal was changed to Zerter-Gossage and Jones and Gropp scored in the 3rd. Gropp with a goal and two assists and Fogarty with 2 goals and an assist on the night. Adding Gilmour, Lettieri and Lindgren back in the mix had to be a real shot in the arm.

Some of these ATO's are doing okay though.

I really don't think poor performance at the ECHL-level indicates anything about the state of the organization. I mean, some NHL orgs don't even have an ECHL affiliate. The best thing ECHL teams usually get from their affiliates is their goaltender. If there are good young players with an NHL or AHL contract on an ECHL roster, they don't stay in the ECHL for long.

IIRC, the only Rangers/Pack contracted players that started the year in Maine were Halverson, Nell, Melanson, and Salvaggio. Once the season was underway, and Day, Ronning, and Gropp (and also Leedahl and Pedrie), were sent down for stints, the Mariners looked like worldbeaters.

Also, don't forget that the Mariners were an expansion team and had to build their roster from scratch without the benefit of keeping players on the protected list. The Montreall/Laval thing didn't help. Montreal decided not to have an ECHL affiliate this year and use ours instead because the Mariners had signed 3 players to ECHL contracts that Laval later signed to AHL deals. (If an ECHL contract is signed prior to an AHL one, the ECHL team keeps that player's ECHL rights.). While Morgan Adams-Moisan was the only one of those three players who spent more than a few games in Maine (LaCouvee was not one of those players and came later.), but Laval called up several other non-contracted players. Kile and Culkin were probably the team's best FW and D for the first part of the season and then Laval kept them up for the rest of the year. Milwaukee also called up and kept one the Mariners' best D for the season.

These are valid points.

But my problem with Maine is that the Rangers did not sign enough young players under Hartford contracts to make a positive impact on Maine and to help out as necessary with Hartford. As you pointed out the Rangers only had Ranger contracts Halverson and Nell and Hartford contracts Mealnson and Salvaggio. Salvaggio was sent off to Siberia and Melanson couldn't make an impact in Hartford. I am somewhat encouraged that Hartford has now brought in several players on ATO contracts who, if signed by Hartford, could start out at Maine and come up to Hartford when Hartford needed players. But there is no reason that the Rangers don't have several players under Hartford contracts that start out in Maine and that when Hartford needs players they are stuck with picking up players, and sometimes older players, with ECHL contracts who have little chance of making an impact on the organization.

Salvaggio was traded for Taylor Cammarata, who is a better player (PPG+ for Maine) , and despite having a few years of minor-pro experience, is actually younger than the rookie Salvaggio. Sean St Amant was also supposed to be down in Maine on an ECHL contract, but he made a good enough impression that he spent almost the entire season in Hartford. Hartford did have a tendency to keep a taxi squad of extra players up in Hartford rather than send them to Maine, though. Greg Chase was also better than Salvaggio and Melanson and younger despite his minor-league experience.

Also, the ECHL. has instituted pretty strict rules on affiliates parking a lot of AHL-contract players in the minors. Some years back, a team won the Turner Cup with IIRC 15 AHL-contract players on the roster. It's difficult to find ECHL info online (the new website is no help), but basically, if a team over the limit on AHL contracts and these AHL-contracted players haven't played a certain amount of AHL games during the season, then those players are not eligible for their team's ECHL playoff roster. The days of orgs sending 6-10 contracted players down to an ECHL affiliate like the Rangers did in Charlotte are basically over.

Couldn't find any limits on parking AHL contracts although as you point out this may be a problem with the website. The website does describe limits on veteran players: Frequently Asked Questions

"How many veteran players are allowed in the ECHL?
Each ECHL team shall be limited to four veteran players (excluding goaltenders) on its Active Roster and Reserve during the Season (Regular Season and Playoffs).
What constitutes a veteran player in the ECHL?
A veteran shall mean a player, other than a goaltender, who has played in at least 260 regular season games of professional hockey. Provided however, any player signed to a NHL or AHL contract which contains an ECHL assignment provision shall be exempt from the foregoing rule. Notwithstanding the above, any player assigned to an ECHL member team on a NHL or AHL contract shall be deemed to be a veteran if said player is 24 years or older and has participated in 260 regular season professional hockey games as of the opening day of the season of said year."

But I think my point is still valid. Maybe Salvaggio and Melanson were the best players they could sign for Hartford last year. But they were only OK ECHL players and neither made a positive impact in Hartford. The Rangers should be able to find some players under Hartford contracts with better potential than they did last year. Just two forwards and no defensemen. Whatever the contract limits that exist the Rangers should be using all available contracts to strengthen the entire organization.
