How exactly were the matchup's decided?
I try to create the most interesting matchups while also giving the serious contenders a chance to go deeper (so things aren’t too anticlimactic). That was tough with this tourney since there were so many great Gretzky seasons; 75% of them could easily dominate the later rounds but that felt too monotonous/redundant. So I made a few Gretzky vs Gretzky matchups early to trim the fat as much as possible

Going with 1985 as Gretzky played the full schedule and was +100 while doing so, highest ever by a forward.

OP giving us easy Gretzky matchups in round 1.

In my mind - all of Gretzky 82, 84 and 86 are legitimate contenders to win the tournament. Haven't decided which one I have #1 however.

Gretzky 85 is still great and not far behind - but he was simply better in 84. If he had played all 80 games, he'd have potted more than 92 goals and 215 points. But even with 74 games, I prefer it to 85
