Carl Reiner (Rob's dad)

didn't invent the television situation comedy (arguably, Jackie Gleason did), but perfected it.
Innovative on several counts, not least the introduction of a sitcom within a sitcom, "The Dick Van Dyke Show"
en.m.wikipedia.org
was both a domestic comedy and an office comedy.
Featuring stellar writing and a magnificent cast, the program was the first to grant American TV viewers a peek inside a young married couple's bedroom (even if they had separate beds), also presenting black characters as members of the middle and professional class, a rarity at the time.
Guest stars included Danny Thomas, Richard Dawson, Wally Cox, Godfrey Cambridge & Don Rickles, many character actors of the day, and often, production numbers performed by cast members.
The great Dick Van Dyke, a devotee of Stan Laurel and gifted physical comedian, played Rob Petrie, head writer for "The Allen Brady Show."
(Reiner is a scene stealing scream as the demanding, egomaniacal host, modeled after Gleason & Milton Berle, not, as many assume, "Your Show Of Shows"'s star Sid Caesar.)
Comfortablely within my Top 10 TV Sitcom Hall Of Fame.
Dick Van Dyke, who had his troubles with alcohol, will celebrate birthday number 99 Friday,
In the clip, which was filmed in October, Van Dyke sings, dances barefoot and offers meditations on aging, family and love.
