People only think Barkov is better because the Panthers for a long time didnt play any defense. Hes not that much better than Aho.
the rest of the panthers may not play defense but Barkov definitely does

Aho has a slight offensive advantage but Barkov is 2 tiers above Aho in defense. Then you consider Florida has a mediocre defense the last 3 seasons

huh, but I thought Habs fans told us the last few years that the offer sheet was a sign he was looking to get out of Raleigh as soon as possible.

Guess this just proves the theory that he played them like a f***ing fiddle to get what he wanted here

And huh, I guess Joe Ovies really was full of shit with his insistence that Aho was going to walk for more money.

Much of Aho's defensive value comes from being way above replacement on the penalty kill. That graph only compares 5-on-5. Admittedly, yes, Barkov is better defensively, but the margin isn't by as much as it appears on this graph.

Seems like kind of an odd contract "structure" with that random 7M thrown in, I understand the last 4 years decreasing. Would have preferred $9.5, but really anything under $10M wouldn't bother me in the least, I'm not quibbling over $500k with Aho.

And yea it's amazing to think we have a core group of Aho, Svech, KK signed for under $23M...yea KK isn't a 1st liner but a damn solid 2/3C at 23 (barely) years old (sometimes you need "core" complimentary pieces as well if they're young)

yea, no. Aho is a tier below Barkov, not similar.

he got 1.1 less cap percentage than Barkov. That is very fair knowing Barkov is the better player.
Not sure i agree with your Aho Barkov comparison. While Barkov is slightly better then Aho with assists and points Aho is only about 25 goals less with 144 less games played. Aho is also slightly better in the playoffs. So Aho is actually a tier above Barkov

It's very much not random. Whenever you see a silly dip in salaries paid for specific years or some anomaly in signing bonuses (to either direction), you can bet it is there in anticipation of a potential lockout for that particular year. In Aho's case that anomalous season is 2026-27, which may or may not happen as planned after the CBA expires in the summer 2026.

This isn't the only post i've seen, just highlighting that there are some still "preferring" the contract was lower. Its 500k. He's making just 1.29mil higher than his previous contract. Aho deserves more than an 800k raise with the cap jumping up next few years. This is a contract for a guy who loves the team and took less than he'd get next year.

I figured there had to be something...and I was hoping/figuring you (as our resident CBA expert) would step in and explain!!!!

This contract is for ages 27-34. An 8 year 2nd contract would have moved the range on his 3rd contract to 30-37.

Paying a bit more 27-29 to avoid the risk of 35-37 might be preferable, knowing what we now know about their tendencies.

Thanks Montreal?
They got played like a f***ing fiddle.

And the best part is that they put a target on their own back that led to them losing Kotkaniemi leaving and signing here for another 8 year deal that is probably already on the cheaper end, and represents our 2-deep at center going into a season where many are calling us the top Cup contender.

So.... again, thanks?
