People who don't watch us play will hate on this deal because of Aho's point production, but if you drop him into a more offensively focused system he's a 100 point guy. The dude is a chameleon who could succeed playing almost any style or tempo. And we have him for 9 more years - what a great day!!

I feel like Aho could've gotten more. Maybe not in terms of salary, but in terms of taking like a 3 year deal to get a super-blockbuster from someone, a la what Matthews might try to do. This is where going past the 1st round in 4 straight seasons and making 2 ECFs helps the Hurricanes. It seems like Toronto has had to constantly pay premiums because of their choking reputation.

With Orlov and Bunting getting signing bonuses, Aho gets in the fun too with his 8yr deal (on top of all the bonuses he got froM the OS):

The 7M for 2026-27 is doubtlessly related to the potential lockdown due to the CBA ending.

He left money on table for Canes to afford better team.

I don't think it's some insane discount or amazing deal currently. As I said, it's great for both sides. Now, if the cap rises the $10 million-ish in the next two to three years that has been speculated, it will be even better than his current contract. There's always some risk with these long ass deals that a guy gets hurt and you end up with, say, a Seguin type situation. But it seems to be about as safe as one of these deals can be.

If he went to UFA, no doubt he'd get at least 11m, maybe even 12m.

I mean he absolutely left money on the table to take this deal. He just signed a long term UFA contract that is only $1.49m more aav than his last RFA contract.

Less their choking reputation than the fact that Tavares got that massive deal and the other members of the core who were already there and rightly thought they were just as good refused to take any discount because of it. And nobody is going to be the first one to take a discount while everyone else is cashing in.

God, that signing was dumb in so many ways. And it really makes you appreciate having guys like Aho at the top of the salary range who don't try for every last dollar.

It's not a gigantic discount, but it's a pretty significant win for the Hurricanes considering that it's slightly under the Barkov number of 8x$10M. Aho has provided a similar caliber of two-way play and overall value while not being as lauded from an awards prespective.

yea, no. Aho is a tier below Barkov, not similar.

he got 1.1 less cap percentage than Barkov. That is very fair knowing Barkov is the better player.
