Played a little last night and as its my first time playing a Halo game online, I gotta say, it was pretty fun. I just don't fully understand the different modes though. Is there a filter to only play certain game types? I could only seem to get into a game that mixes the game type after every round.

Right how only looks like quick play, ranked and BTB. I’m sure when the game launches they will break out all the modes like in the past

I'm in the same boat. I've only ever played local PvP multiplayer in Halo, and not since Halo 2. I very much enjoyed jumping in last night, although I was admittedly terrible.

I don't think there is a filter for specific game types other than the 4v4 mode and the big team mode, but I could be wrong.

Playlists will definitely change and evolve. I think they’re stress testing everything.
As part of Halo Infinite’s multiplayer beta launch today, we’re excited to debut our matchmaking playlist lineup. In this section you can read up on the playlists, their settings, and the map and mode pairings you’ll find within each one.
Our approach to Halo Infinite’s launch playlists was fairly simple – start with a focused offering to ensure healthy matchmaking and be prepared to adjust as needed. It is truly a live game, so we will be monitoring all playlists, including event playlists, to see which ones are performing well and which ones aren’t. Using that data, combined with player feedback, we will be able to identify opportunities to add or remove playlists (or even certain map and mode pairings within a playlist), to ensure a quality experience when playing Halo Infinite matchmaking. Launch is just the beginning - Halo Infinite's online multiplayer experience will grow and evolve over time!

Yeah I don't like not being able to just play slayer right now, but the gameplay feels really tight.

I also think they will change the challenge stuff pretty quickly since everyone seems to hate it.

I haven’t had this much fun playing Halo since Halo 3. Wow. What a great combo of old and new.

Feels great. It's straight up just Halo. No gimmicks, no bullshit like you see in other shooters. Just straight up arena shooting.

The good;

Map design seems pretty solid. None of the maps i played on outright stuck out as bad/lame.

Weapons are...interesting? Not a lot of returning ones outside of the BR, Pistols and rocket launcher. I think my favorite out of the new additions is probably the commando. Feels like a DMR with more recoil. Most of the weapons feel fun as f*** to use just like it would in other Halo game.

Like they didn't outright eliminate stuff like thrust and just turned it into a powerup you can find on the map.

The bad (not sure how much of this is technically because it's a "beta" but still):

Battle pass progression is horrendous. I get once you purchase them, you own them forever, and that the season is like 160 days but like....man. tying it to just completing challenges is dumb considering they get progressively harder/force you to play modes you might not enjoy to do so. At least give the player some type of xp progression just through playing/winning matches like literally every other battle pass does.

What did they do to my carbine? :_:

No stat tracking. Surely that's just a beta thing right?

Great experience thus far though.

Progression is terrible. What's the point of getting kills, playing the objective, etc if you don't get XP for it?

…to win the match.

Remember when people played videogames because they were fun, and not just to see exp bars fill up?

I for one don't really care about the progression system as long as the rewards aren't op weapons and what not. I just want a smooth experience and to be able to play what I want to play.

I really like these maps. The Halo 5 maps felt computer generated and none of them stood out. Aquarius is gorgeous and the big team battle maps are pretty cool.
I think too many of the maps play the same way IMHO. Again, huge upgrade from Halo 5, but Recharge, Live Fire, Aquarius (which is similar to Warlock for me), and Streets are all multiple level maps that have numerous catwalks and entry/exits. As I mentioned in the last post, Streets will probably become my favourite, but Recharge is definitely the game's best map (atm) because it somewhat resembles Prisoner from Halo: CE.

I didn't know you could do this, but last night I found out that you can go in a custom game and play with bots instead of going to training if you just want slayer. They upped the challenge with Spartan-mode and I think they're tougher than in Alpha. I then tested them when it came to different playable modes and they all played Oddball, CTF, and the new territories one. Afterwards, I tried to play a BTB, but there is a glitch or error in the code and teams become really unbalanced when setting up the match (teams were always 8 vs 2). Only thing bots do not do currently - and hopefully they upgrade them - is use vehicles.

Same. Turf was amazing. Still is.
There was a lot of wrong about Halo 2 when it came to gameplay, but I can't think of any other game in history that had as many class-A multiplayer map designs than that game did. Off the top of my head that I absolutely loved includes Ascension, Containment, Headlong, Ivory Tower, Lockout, Midship, Sanctuary, Terminal (another personal favourite), Turf, Warlock, and Zanzibar.

There are rumours that some guns are going to return in the future such as the original shotgun.

A ton of Covenant weapons were removed including all of the Promethans. Hopefully they come back in Forge because 343 mentioned they're going to do a major upgrade with it and I thought Forge in Halo 5 was the best aspect of that game. :x

There is definitely a lot of weapons, and I need to do weapon drills to understand how to best use some. The only one I hate is the pulse carbine. I’ll just walk right past that thing.

I had the same reaction. Seems to absolutely shred with headshots but it's not a hitscan weapon so it's much harder to do so.

I miss the covenant carbine, but it makes sense why it's not there after what seph said.

I wonder why they completely ditched teleports from their multiplayer map designs. I think this started at Halo 4 onward. They were a staple in so many of the classic maps. I still think they could have their place in Infinite.

The game is too fast now. They’d make things too chaotic

Jumped on for a few matches last night and absolutely got my dick kicked in. I'm so used to the extra vertical mobility in games like Destiny and Titanfall, not having a double jump leaves me feeling naked now. I'll relearn, and might need to adjust some of the controller settings, but the game definitely feels good.

They were almost completely phased out in Halo 3 in favor of lifts and man-cannons because they were more fun and interactive, plus provided the enemies you were attempting to evade or out-flank a chance to shoot you out of the air.

I approve of the change. Teleporters were essentially a map-design 'cheat' they put in to cover for the fact that they basically put together the shipping maps in Halo:CE together in like 6-8 months. They didn't have the chance to iterate and iterate and ensure flow through the different areas, so they included teleporters to basically let you bypass areas and routes entirely to ensure combat kept flowing.

You can look up your stats online if you want.

Been playing against people and getting my arse kicked (haven't played competitive games in years'). Very much dislike how overpowered the assault rife is and really hate the spawns. I keep getting double teamed constantly because I am battling a bloke and another spawns close and just finishes me up.

E: Holy shit the spawns are horrible, literally spawned and two seconds I get gun downed by an assault rifle.

Yeah I must say, after one day of playing, it's got a chance to really bring Halo back into the spotlight IMO.

Arena is all kinds of fun, feels so much like that "MLG" playlists from back in the H3 and H2 Days.. Quickplay is just ok IMO, I think the AR is a tough too powerful and forgiving in its power. Haven't played BTB yet, but that's usually a good laugh of a game mode.

Beyond that, I kind of agree the maps are a little "dull" per se. Could definitely use some more vibrant color changes. Battle pass seems really tough to level up for sure.

But overall its a lot of fun and as someone who's introduction into gaming was essentially Halo 3 and as someone who spent the better part of 3 years straight playing that game seemingly non stop, today felt like one of those days again for the first time in a decade.
