LA was supposed to be fighting for a WC. They still might by season end but so far he has been one of the biggest reasons why. NJ was the 2nd favorite for the cup last year. The roster is stacked all around.

Sidney Crosby is leading all forwards in 5v5 high danger scoring chances against (161). The 2nd worst defensive forward in the entire NHL has 142.
Crosby is also on pace for the absolute worst even strength goals against season of the past 20 years:

Spend some time on the Sabres GDT’s and you’ll see what folks really think of his defensive effort game in and game out.
One case where some statistics (and let’s be fair - blocked shots and takeaways are really, really poor benchmarks of anything and being utilized on a PK doesn’t actually make you good defensively) don’t tell the story.
He should be nowhere near this list.

Tuch is actually bad defensively technically.
I think some see him as good because he is very good at poke checking the puck away and getting shorthanded breakaways..
But as far as in zone posotionally sound defensive player..he's bad
I'm actually shocked by that 2nd in blocked shots stat.

This is a tough award to win. The player literally has to be on the radar for a couple of seasons before they are even considered. So a player like Hischer might be talked about this season but has next to no chance of winning it. If he plays like this for a couple more seasons then he can win it.

I think he is a good pk'er ... he harrasses the puck carrier up the ice and has good wing span that helps him poke check the puck away or is able to get in passing lane..and as a result gets breakaways.
5v5 in zone defense is another thing..
