Bad teams tend to stay bad for what's left of the season, obviously.
But the Habs are severely under performing. They're a team most people expected to see in the playoffs. I don't think the same rule applies then.
This season so far reminds me of 11-12 where we ended up picking 3rd overall, but everyone knew it was an anomaly. The next season we were back in the playoffs. This season could either go in that direction, or we'll claw our way back in range of a playoffs spot. Neither would surprise me, but I'm hoping for a high pick and a revamped management team at this point.
I'm not suggesting the Habs aren't getting crappy luck. But the reality is that with the parity in the NHL, it may not even matter. The Habs may simply run out of runway to bounce back. They wouldn't be the 1st team to miss the playoffs while playing well for the most part.
And that's assuming they remain healthy. Remember, even if they've been getting unlucky, the team still has serious flaws that could have sunk them even if they were healthy. Plekanec remains a heavy minute center who is an offensive black hole. The D remains slow and poor at moving the puck and both Weber and Petry need to find their games.
