Two guesses:

1. Montreal being so close, they want to show there is a separate market for hockey in Quebec that is unrelated to the Habs.

2. They need teams that will report a positive experience to the NHL and they do not expect the Montreal Canadiens to do that (and rightly so)

The whole venture is another pitch to the NHL. One that is probably not going to work.

Yeah they have zero chance of getting a team. Quebec City is basically the only major city that hasn't been booming from all the money coming into the country. Only major city that will likely see population decline or mild growth rather than ridiculous growth

Quebec is not even in the top 10 (sadly) in consideration from the NHL. They will probably award a team to New Orleans before Quebec.

Québec isn’t getting a team because it doesn’t move the needle for tv deal…

They have the new Arena there was 2 expansion they got past over ARZ playing in a 5000 seat arena if they wanted a team in Quebec it would already be there…. Player and positive review won’t change a thing…

This is criminal waste money, people will say how about F1 and golf or other sport being subsidized… Those are flagship events with some reach no one will care outside Quebec City not even kings fans (LA couldn’t even play at home seem like there were renovations at there rink).

LA had to find a venue, second getting the kings to quebec(flight, hotel and meal) for a week I have a hard time believing it cost more than 500k$ so why are we spending 5M$+
If Montreal offered to come for free it is even worst…
This is one of the stupidest thing I hear in a while and biggest waste of money… there no way to recover any of that money, Make Zero sense to give money to a team or the NHL that jerk us around while there a bunch of town struggling to have or keep there rink open…

I hope Habs have part of their camp and at least one or two preseason games in Trois-Rivières. They have their ECHL affiliate there. It'll help that community. And they have a very nice arena. That place will be packed.

Let Quebec pay $7M of public funds to have the Kings come there. Habs can go to 3R.

If we get more growth, the roads and housing crisis will be even bigger clusterf***s.

Good point about TV money.

Honestly, this whole thing just comes off looking like spite as they’d rather have tax player money spent to bring in an American team to play, actually two teams since the Kings need an opponent.

No clue why this happened. First off, Molson would have done this for free. Second, why would the organisation allow this (they were certainly consulted because Québec is part of Habs’ territory)? Unless they get a cut. That’s all I can think of.

The habs havent played a game in Quebec city since 2018 and have showed no interest of coming back, once they learned that the Kings were coming, they contaced the firm managing the building to show their interest and were told too little too late

At least if it was Colorado, I would get an idea why this is happening. But LA??

I saw this meme today, pretty on point: (for anglos, the initial question is: what do we do with our money and the kid is saying let's use the money to help the school system)

Lets see if they go to Quebec next season or if its a convenient one-time offer.
Got to admit i do the same with my in-laws. Inviting them when i know they will be on a trip and wont be able to accept. « Lets reschedule » …

Even if this was true, what does it change to the fact that the government is spending millions of tax payers' dollars as as part of an already failed sales pitch to the NHL while at the same time saying there's no money for education/healthcare workers, transportation and many other issues?

It's despicable.
