Post-Game Talk: Habs lose to the Blues. Fail to come back from another large deficit.

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Yes, absolutely. We can't be a bottom feeder forever. Playing games that matter this late into the season helps. Plus, what would they have gotten for Matheson? At best, a late first who may or may not ever have a huge impact on the team.
You think trading Matheson at 50% retained at last year’s trade deadline only gets you a late 1st?
I think we are getting a lot more.
I want an organic ascension to the playoffs, not trading 1st and 2nd for 3 rd line forwards to please the fefans or Because Molson wants playoffs revenue, but that it’s team.

I can get not matching Broberg at the price.. but why the hell didn't they match Holloway?

Probably felt they saw what they had to see and that he wasn't worth 2.3m AAV. 25 points in 114 games and about to be 23. Oilers thought he wasn't going to be anything and they were most likely right. Sometimes players need to change teams to blossom.

He was their 8th best forward scorer in playoffs while being strong on the forecheck. Not evaluating this as being worth 2.3 millions is madness specially when the player is 22.

I shut it off after the first period. The Blues had our number, they gave us no space whatsoever. Brian Mudryk and Frankie Corrado gave me anxiety and rage with their god damn useless stories that went on for 30-40 second increments instead of doing the play by play.
I got annoyed too and went to cook some shrimp in the intermission. Did I miss Kenzie?

So you thought this was a cup contending roster this year? Wow...

Not according to both this board and the concensus from media pundits heading into the season.

We are quite further ahead than most predicted... I was one of the few posters here that saw this level as realistic, and even then, I didn't think we'd hold this high if we ran into major injuries to key players.

Right... Because he'll get less out of an improved roster lol

Possible, just not very likely.

Couldn't disagree more.

Again, could not disagree more.

Right... Quick question, how many cups have you won or been a part of?

This is perhaps the worst take you've offered. The comparisons are so off base as to wonder if you've ever actually listened to either Keefe or Boudreau discuss hockey...

You mean last night when the Habs lost to the hottest team in the league that has beat the Caps, Avs & Kings 2x during their current league best run since Feb ... The same Blues team that has scored 5+ goals in 1/4 of their games in hat stretch.

Its one thing to acknowledge context matters, it's another to actually apply it. While personal & emotional preference is what it is (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) your argument is largely incoherent with the ways coaching affects team and sport performance.

Objectively, the Habs have improved in key metrics (points, GF, GA, special teams efficiency), and this despite minimal roster turnover and offseason/in season player acquisition.

We also have one of the youngest rosters in the league (2nd to Buffalo but I believe that includes Price).

Qualitatively, the available information suggests that the roster is very much bought in and aligned with the coaching staff (despite the rebuild process and associated losing).

Coaching is quite clearly a strength for our organization right now. Assuming the tactical and game management decisions will remain static as the roster improves and as the organization pivots out of rebuild focus is.... A very poor assumption.

How well MSL & co. will adapt to being a top roster with high performance pressure and greater scrutiny & preparation from opposing teams, remains to be seen. But there is zero reason to assume the worst, and it's pretty foolish to hold up individual poor game outcomes (while ignoring the full context) as some kind of evidence of coaching inadequacy.

1-1-2 with 4.25 GA... Outch.

I think the 4-Nations break recharges have been expended and not much break from now until the last game of the season so this should only get worst.

Just feed them edibles (to make them sleep all day), rotisserie chicken and donuts. This should suffice to recharges the batteries.

Yeah the last offer sheet we did was totally met with indifference.
If you extend an offer sheet that makes sense it would likely be years before the other team could do anything about it. Making an offer sheet when the other team has cap room to match it is idiotic. See Bergevin. You do what the Blues did and it will likely be several years before the Oilers have cap room to even contemplate retaliation.

Dude it's a message board. Have a take, don't suck... And don't take it personally if a bad take gets called out.

I responded to your poorly reasoned point as directly as possible, sorry itge reply was too hard to understand :dunno:

Need to put things in context here.

1. Montembault has played behind mostly dreadful teams.
2. The team got off to a brutal start this season.
3. Going into last night’s game, he was 7-0-3 and .911 since 4 Nations.

He’s been pretty good. I get why MSL started him. I agree with you that he probably needs some rest and we can’t ride him like this but you can’t blame MSL for going with the hot hand.
In that win streak Montreal faced Ottawa, Carolina, SJ, Buf, Buf, Edm, Cal, Van, Seattle
you can add Armia & Dvo to the list of players to let walk, and can someone file a missing persons report on Evans ? he's been practically invisible since re- signing .
Agreed on Dvorak and Armia need to trim the fat, already have Gallagher who's long in the tooth despite having a productive year but I'm not sure he can continue that into next year. Anderson has found his niche and Evans will be fine, no one really showed up last night and didn't help that Montambeault tends to fall asleep here and there during games. Montreal really needs to find a bonafide 2C to support Suzuki and dump the free agents like Savard Armia and Dvorak and make room for some younger blood.

Beck, Kapanen are prob both NHL ready as well and both C so one might have to go on a trade to get a 2C.

Could try getting Trevor Zegras who's a natural C playing W - I'd be willing to give Mailloux, and Kapanen or Beck for him.

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Laine - Zegras - Demidov
F. Xhekaj
- Dach - Heinemen
Anderson - Evans - Gallagher (if he's not bought out)

In no particular order on D

Ghule
Hutson
Strubble
Xhekaj
Carrier
Reinbacher
Engstrom

Trade or don't re-sign please

Montambeault (he reminds me of sleepy smurf the way he falls asleep during games)
Savard
Dvorak
Matheson (never liked his defensive game, last year's stats were a fluke) TRADE AWAY FAST
Newhook (I like him but there's simply no more room for a guy who can skate but can't score and really isn't a setup guy)
Armia
Pezetta
Roy - Can also be used in a trade

I'm not in a panic mode but we saw the trend prior to 4 nations.

They go on a heater late December and January, and fall apart in the extended stretch of games prior to 4 nations break on the brink of being out of the playoff picture completely.

A repeat of that cycle is entirely possible.

Yes, young team is inconsistent, learning to win in a playoff race. This shouldn't be news to anyone. Last night was a stinker no doubt about it, no legs, no energy, it happens, sucks, but it does. Best we can hope is that they continue to learn and grow from it.

Regardless, they're still in a great position, have exceeded realistic expectation, and are on the cusp of becoming relevant again in the very near future.

It's been an insanely wild up and down season, albeit a successful one on the whole.

Hard to be mad at that, though many will try.
