Habs will be a contender within 2 years. Matheson will be part of the early contending team. He may well be around after that in a minor roll if he hasn't faded.Matheson will turn 31 in february. He wont be part of this team for years. If he is the rebuild will be a failure. Matheson has maybe 2-3 good years left as a top 4 at most. After that he'll go the way of the Petry i.e. a cap dump if smeone is stupid enough to extend him past that expiration date.
In 2020 when all our fans were ready to keep and extend all our vets for 8 years despite us being 24th in the league I warned them that not every body is Jagr. And i was right. Petry and Gallagher unsurprisingly became cap dump soon after signing their extension. It was very predictablea and not a surprise to anybody who follow the NHL closely.
I'm calling it now if we extend our vets for multiple years it will be a mistake. We are not there yet.
Lol... Matheson and Savard doesn't scream contention to you?! Habs have 3-6 that can be ok. Somewhat. But they don't have 1-2 at all. And I don't think Reinbacher is that either.I don't think the current D Corps is a contending one. There are some pieces in place that will be part of that core. Every GM in the league would want Xhekaj on their bottom pairing. Hutson of course is Hutson and his upside is elite. Not a top pairing guy but a top 4. Guhle is a top 4. Reinbacher is also a piece that could become integral to the future D Corps. Mailloux and Engstrom are excellent prospects for the future.
Carrier, Matheson and Savard are not part of the future D group that will contend. Maybe Carrier ends up on the 3rd pairing with Xhekaj. Currently the Habs don't have a future #1 Dman unless Reinbacher exceeds expectations
I thought he was fairly invisible and loved him on the Jets but he is a power play specialist. A luxury most teams cannot afford to have. I wish the best for him in Montreal. He is an exciting player who just needs to keep his head on straight to help a team.I don't know about other games, but from what I saw, Laine played pretty well today. Although you can see he's not in shape, as a Columbus fan I can compare. But he is a winger, not a center. Dach was beeping the puck, made transition, not him.
Hard to tell what Reinbacher's upside is.Lol... Matheson and Savard doesn't scream contention to you?! Habs have 3-6 that can be ok. Somewhat. But they don't have 1-2 at all. And I don't think Reinbacher is that either.
Missed the game (luckily, it turns out!). How did Montembeault look?
I don't follow that last sentence. I saw Laine make a lot if plays last night to create scoring chances. Though I also saw him turn the puck over a few times. As usual I saw Newhook turn the puck over a lot.
I was wrong. Strubs called upI have a feeling they will call up Mailloux
If you look at the Columbus stats I put in his thread, you'll see that's not true.I thought he was fairly invisible and loved him on the Jets but he is a power play specialist. Yeah and? That doesn't really answer my question of which LHD is getting thrown off the team so Engstrom can have a spot. There are 5 of them: Guhle, Matheson, Hutson, Xhekaj and Struble...Did you read the post I was replying to?
I agree about Davh, but not every time Laine gets the puck is it a turnover. Laine did some nice stick handling in tight spaces, including on the boards, to set up his linemates. He was average. Didn't make a big save. Didn't let in a stinker.
He didn't do anything last night because we didn't have a PP. He needs time but anytime Laine takes someone on or has the puck on the wall, you can bet your bottom dollar that the puck is going to the other team. He's just not there yet.
Dach is rounding back into form. Newhook is playing better but has no finish. Laine is giving nothing 5 on 5. That's why the 2nd line isn't effective most nights. It's okay, they'll get there.. but people still want to take early season Dach and apply it to his play now to excuse Laine, and it's just not true.

I feel Newhook works hard and gets to pucks with his speed, but more often than not when the puck goes to him, it immediately goes to the other team.
Laine last night was still among passes and zone entries like this one:
I'd personally like to see us get another top six forward to play with Laine and Dach, and move Newhook down to the bottom of 6. Next game watch how often Newhook turns it over by not properly receiving a pass or by getting bumped off the puck along the wall.
That's a Hab fan for you. Negative AF. Win 2 and it's Stanley Cup, lose 2 and it's lets rebuild the rebuild.First off, sorry to be posting here with my avatar
Second, I'm a bit surprised by how negatively yall saw the game, I only saw the third and understand the second period was a stinker, but thought you guys had a really good final frame against a very good opponent. Hemmed them them in like I haven't seen many teams do to Winnipeg this year and forced like 5 icings inside a few minutes. Creating good looks off it was an issue but there were some good chances off WPG turnovers which is gonna happen when you keep a team in their zone. That bang-bang tripping penalty or whatever it was helped the Jets find their feet again, but otherwise I thought the Habs were on a good track.
I know it's a bit of a random post to make on a opposing team's board but I was surprised to see so many sky is falling reactions in here so I thought I'd throw another perspective out there. À bientôt
You do not think he is a pp specialist? If you look at the Columbus stats I put in his thread, you'll see that's not true.
When I say he played pretty well, I mean his current state after the injury. If he was fine, had game experience, the evaluation would be different.
so dumb...not sure what the heck MSL was thinkingPulling the goalie with the 4th line and Xhekaj out is quite the decision, but I mean the second line was complete trash and the first line played the whole game. Still don't think we played that bad, just made the same mistake on each of their goals.
This is NOT a plusCome visit it is not that bad here plus we have a french quarter so to speak.
Yes but the stats show he isn't just a PP specialist He scored as many goals 5 on 5 as on the PP. This year he wasn't 100% so he was far better on the PP.You do not think he is a pp specialist?
I do not know where you posted the stats but in Winnipeg that is where he excelled. He had 30 goals in 2019-20 and 15 on the pp
The previous year 44 goals with 20 on the pp.
This year he has 10 of his 12 goals are pp goals.
We started declining as soon as we closed that thread. We warned them too it would cause bad mojo. Don't fix what ain't broke we were playing amazing because that thread was still alive

I get it . I was thinking of him with the Jets.
I said about CBJ. And Columbus had bad PP.
He is still a pp specialist to me because in the past he is Scoring almost as many 5 v5 as on the pp along with his ' lazy' play.Yes but the stats show he isn't just a PP specialist He scored as many goals 5 on 5 as on the PP. This year he wasn't 100% so he was far better on the PP.
Yet so farSo close

Super weird man idk why that thread ruffled so many feathers. Took forever to even get a tank thread despite how awful we were at the start. Can't have nice things I guess.I don’t understand the logic in closing the thread? Reduce negativity? That responsibility falls on the beholder. If you don’t want to hear what’s in the thread, don’t go in it or ignore it.
It’s effectively censoring people’s ability to freely discuss the team if you aren’t wearing rose coloured glasses or have the pom poms out.
