Pacioretty and Petry wanted out because they didn’t want to be stuck on bottom feeders. Anderson looks to be doing the same. Can’t remember Domi’s situation but I think it had to do something with contract extension negotiations not going well? Gallagjer was pouting and would’ve been gone if it wasn’t for his albatross contract. I think the common theme is some vets are harder to keep motivated when the going gets tough. Even Price looked fed up over stretches of time over the last 5 years before he was hurt. Hopefully this rebuild cleanses this franchise completely.
Pretty sure Domi threw a hissy fit when Suzuki replaced him as the 1C. Guy just flat out stopped caring and played the opposite of how he did the first year.

Gorton and Hughes were shown on TSN and pointing at something going on and didn't look pleased. I would like to have heard that conversation.

Bring us some toughness O' mighty HUGO!
Was it Gorton who brought Reaves to NYR or was it post Gorton?

Post Gorton.

Reaves was acquired at the end of July 2021 whereas the Rags had fired Gorton on May 5th, 2021.

What’s of greater interest is how up to that point, Gorton had built a team of soft players, all the more exposed when Tom Wilson annihilated Panarin. Hopefully, he learned something from it, for our sake.

Didn't Gorton say something about that Wilson/Panarin event? I remember hearing him talk about how Wilson taught him a lesson about why his teams need bigger, tougher players.

Read several pieces and couldn’t find that particular statement. Gorton only first agreed to talk about it some 3 months after he was let go by the Rangers.

He knew of the issue but had taken a progressive approach to it. One writer imputed It to this: « The modern, analytics-based argument that “tough guys don’t help you win” is nonsense. »

As you know, Wilson only received a $5,000 fine for his actions.

It’s only after Drury had taken the job over from Gorton, that the glaring lack of toughness was adressed:

« In response to Wilson pushing the Rangers’ players around, the organization gave up a third-round pick (arguably an overpayment) to acquire 6’2”, 255-pound right-wing Ryan Reaves from the Vegas Golden Knights; a seventh-round pick to lure 6’2″, 203-pound left-wing Barclay Goodrow from the Tampa Bay Lightning early when they could have gotten him for free in free agency; and 6’2″, 205-pound left-wing Sammy Blais from the St. Louis Blues (in addition to a second-round pick) that sent Buchnevich to the Gateway City in a lopsided deal that should have garnered more of a return for the Rangers; and 6’6″, 205-pound defenseman Jarred Tinordi in free agency. Goodrow signed an expensive six-year contract that carries a $3.64 million cap hit with the Rangers this offseason. »

What's funny is I was watching this game at work, saw the 1st Panthers goal was being reviewed as I started to get busy. I saw the replay without sound and thought it was going to be an easy no goal call so I tuned out thinking I'd be able to watch the start of the 3rd period in a 0-0 game. Turn the game back on after the intermission - WTF?!

I thought Matheson's hit on Staal was cheap AF too, not sure what he was thinking there. Staal was a good teammate here during our cup run and a concussion would probably be the end of his career.

The fights were all entertaining, especially the Pez one

I missed most of the 2nd period so if I ignore the score the Habs looked pretty good to me tonight!

They weren't teammates at that time and Staal was forechecking hard -- Matheson happened to get him a bit harder than either of them figured. I guess it is a penalty but I don't see malicious intent -- just think what FLA fans would say if Matheson didn't brace and counter-check and instead got rocked by a full speed Staal instead? They'd say he should've protected himself, not put himself in a vulnerable position, etc.

Who would shell out hundreds of dollars for a Dadonov jersey? Either the guy lost a bet or it’s a relative.

Suzuki did start on wing and was moved to center but that was after Domi's performance was meh and Suzuki was improving. Later on that season, Domi was tried at center again several times.

Domi's problem on the Habs is we had way too many soft small forwards and he drowned over time in that mix.

Domi is a winger who can play center. He's getting very high usage with the Blackhawks and I don't think this will fool many people. However, teams will consider adding him for the playoffs.

Matheson stopped wayyyy too short. If he had the puck it wouldn't have been so cheap, but he made no effort to play it. Also Staal slowed up at the end. And hurting Staal helps the Panthers

Your breakdown is exactly how it all went down. Wilson mugged Panarin and the angry letter to the NHL came out. Gorton was fired and in came Reaves.

So far, we’re in a bit better shape. Guys like Edmundson can scrap but WiFi and Pezz are more than willing to scrap.

Also, noted goon Matheson apparently can as well :sarcasm:

Just on that last note, he had to answer for that dirty hit but I just laughed how Tkachuk, being the little shit he is, picks a fight with a non-fighter. I knew it had to happen, but looking at that fight in a vacuum, it looks lame.

100%

Staal had zero intention of hitting Matheson. He was 100% puck focussed in the slo mo and Matheson did a pretty shithead move there. I’m sure there was no actual malice/intent to injure, but what he did was still dangerous and stupid.

Staal was completely unsuspecting there. Again, don’t think Matheson wanted to hurt him. Probably thought he was going to get run into the boards, but it was still dangerous on his part.

I get people are mad Anderson doesn't fight, but the guy can throw bombs.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's been told by previous and now current management to not going looking for a fight.

Had Gudas obligated, Anderson would have beat his ass.

People have to remember, you fight to establish yourself in the league and then you don't have to anymore.

Yeah we'd like to see it more.
Archaic jail mentality. I don’t like it. Fighting should be reserved for answering to someone taking liberties against your team.

Here we have it, @OldCraig71 came up with yet another gem in the GDT when he posted that Pezzetta reminded him of Weird Al Jancovic.

I agree it isn’t a great hit and I don’t know if Staal would have rock him, but I seen a lot of player MTL not protecting them self enough and we have seen a lot of dirty play in that game that were worst in term of risk and intent… better safe that sorry I have no issue with the hit since it clearly wasn’t done with intent to injure.
