News Article: Habs have a reality tv show?

What I would love to see is for NESN to offer entirely mike'd up games on NESN Plus a couple of times per year. Make it pay per view for $15 or $20, and let us have full access to what is said on the ice. That would be worth the money, IMO.

Thornton has been mic'd up a few times
It would be an interest concept to mic players of both teams during big games
Like only pic a few select games to mic players
Starting in the future like next season have both teams mic'd when the Bruins play Sabres, Canucks, Rangers, Hurricanes, Canadiens, Leafs........

Would be interesting to see what players say to each other on the ice(marchand)
How fights start. The staged ones and unstaged ones.

I am very interested in hockey trash talk. Growing up playing basketball there is a lot of trash talk I wonder if Hockey trash talk is the same.

There won't be that many episodes so its nothing crazy. It's different. I'd imagine more teams will try out this strategy in the future. I believe many teams have the draft talk business. I know Toronto and Columbus did it. Then there's teams who did 24/7 and other teams like Edmonton who did oil change.

It's really the future but it needs to be controlled and not a distraction. From what I hear the habs one isn't intrusive.

I go back and forth on this.

As a huge fan of the team, I think it would be really cool to see the inner workings and learn more about how they all function as a group. I know some people choose to look at the team just as hockey players, but I like the personal element of it. It's nice to learn a little bit about the people you spend so much time watching/discussing.

On the other hand, I'm sure it's a huge distraction, and I'm not sure I want the team dealing with that. Some guys would likely relish in the opportunity, while others would hate it. Pressure/division in a room that may disrupt chemistry.

Hey Kate! As usual, I agree with you. My inner voyeur enjoys watching these types of shows, but I'm concerned that it adds another pressure onto the players' crowded plates. Playing in Montreal is tough enough without having your daily five minutes of peace interrupted by a friggin' camera lens. We're forcing a whole new set of necessary skills onto these guys: "Price is leading the league in Money Shots, but his Clever Quips percentage is down a bit..."

I think Oil Change is great. I watched some of it for the first time yesterday.

As long as it is not a distraction for the players, I'd be all for the Bruins doing this.

I hope to be able to watch the habs version.

Maybe its my old school ways, but I always hated when players become like rock stars. I just don't see what it adds to the team on the ice. I guess for the fans, its nice, but It does nothing for the team itself

My HS football team was featured in something similar for local broadcasts... it definitely turned into a huge distraction.

Yeah, I remem-bah when Sully got busted for sneakin' bee-ahs the night before the big Thanksgivin' game wit our main rivals. Coach got wikid pissed at him and he called him a good for nuthin' los-ah and trew him off the team...

I like how RDS has done it so far, it's not that invasive. When they show important speeches in the room by Bergevin or Therrien, they use a hidden camera. Even when they announced to Galchenyuk he would play the opening game, they used a hidden camera.

"Ok you hosers, listen up. These guys are good. Make sure you finish and follow through on your dives, eh. We don't tolerate lack of effort on this team. So, no looking back at the ref, eh! Dead giveaway. Remember what we practiced, kick your feet like a habs fan reading Shanahan's decision on Chara, or just lay there like a slug. Don't move til you hear they got at least 2!

Now boys, Subban is back. *3 players reluctantly bang their sticks* We need as many PP's as possible. So turn into the boards face first any time you're eligible to be hit then go down like Mike Komisarek fighting Lucic. No passing up on opportunities on this team. Remember to touch Halpern's picture on the way out of the room."

a) I wouldn't want them distracted by anything.

b) I don't have a voyeuristic bone in my body, not for what's been produced so far on TV anyway. I caught a bit of "Oil Change" but it seemed more documentary than reality.

c) I don't want to be dissapointed by what people are really like. When I found out Ference rides his bike everywhere it was interesting, but mildly disappointing. I know they're not characters in a TV show, although they entertain us in a very similar fashion. However I don't want to think of any of them as people I wouldn't like IRL.

For generations Foster Hewitt described a game on radio that wasn't really happening. In that his flare for radio play by play, let people's imagination flow about the game. Hockey survived being televised because it is such a great game, and it will obviously survive this too, but in some ways it's all just eating away at a mystique that also has value to the viewers. Or at least to this one anyway.

If the NHL wants to sell this game; mic up more players and show some the gamesmanship on the ice. The game within a game most fans never see or hear. It all wouldn't be pretty. But it would all be pretty entertaining.

It would also give some who never played an appreciation of what an intimate game it can be compared to other sports.

Getting close to the game itself on the ice is an excellent idea. Perhaps an alternate audio feed might suffice as a start.

But the players personal workings and life style off the ice, even when hockey related sort of breaks down a mystique. I know the reality of who they are lies somewhere in between our concepts of them, and who they actually are, but I think it's something best left alone. For me anyway. For instance Chara has a strict dietary regimen, almost monastic. I know he's not eating raw bear meat, but somewhere in between is what I prefer to imagine.

Am I mis-reading this, or are you saying that you don't like people that ride bikes instead of driving or walking or taking public transportation? How is that disappointing?
