Post-Game Talk: Habs defeat the little cubs.

The Habs didn't have a great game, but they looked like the much better team, which is bound to happen when facing a team that has 3 legit NHLers on defense, none of which should be playing above #4 on the depth chart.

A lot of positives tonight.

The game the gave Montembeault off seems to have really helped him. He's been dialed in the last two games.

First line has been carrying the team big time, like they should. I thought Slaf had a particularly good all around game and Suzuki has looked like a superstar for a while now. I'll add that I think Suzuki being the player he is has made both Slaf and Caufield a lot more responsible without the puck. We saw the opposite effect in Ottawa where Tkachuk would not care about his defensive game and neither did the rest of his teammates. Slaf, in particular, is good defensively for a winger his age.

Hutson could have had 2-3 points again.

Guhle is absolutely fantastic. I have no idea how anyone can watch him play and think about shipping him out. He's a first pair defenseman that can do everything, including shutting down the fastest players in the league. He's a true warrior and one of the best leaders on the club. Even though the numbers aren't there, he generates a lot more offense than one could surmise by looking at his point production.

The Dvorak line is fantastic. I thought Dvorak's defensive game was overrated, but he's legitimately been the second best player on the team after Suzuki without the puck. He feeds his wingers well and Gallagher/Anderson have really found their role on the team. Anderson is not popular, but I guarantee his teammates, the coaching staff and management love having him. He's a bull and he's rounded out his game this year. He's actually been very, very good without the puck which is a bit of a shocker considering he was pretty poor in past years. Gallagher has always been a responsible player, but his scoring touch has come back somewhat. They've been the true second line this year. I wouldn't be surprised if management is considering keeping Dvorak, but chances are he's gone. The way he's played this year, he won't be easy to replace.

Looking forward to adding Kapanen on the team. I think he'll help balance the lines. I'm just hoping that Dach, Reinbacher and Laine come back healthy next year. With Demidov, the team should grow even more.
Ideally we lock in a playoff spot soon to give Monty even a couple games off.

We cannot sign Dvorak, the guy was mailing it in his entire time here until the second half of this season. Newhook as the 3C with a new 2C next year seems like the plan.

Something's gotta give with this second and fourth line. Just zero chemistry on that second line where none of the players complement each other's flaws. It's really bad. Evans has lost the offensive touch (yes I know he had a 2 point night) and Armia's injury is making him basically unplayable. I think Kapanen will replace Pezz soon so maybe that fixes things but I can't stress how badly that second line needs to get changed, it's been a season long issue. The only hope is Demidov but they won't buy him out.

That really should be the last game with Savard. Yes leadership, yes veteran presence, yadda yadda, Xhekaj can skate and needs to play instead. Struble's struggling next to him too which highlights how Savard's the problem.

Other than that, 1st and 3rd line were excellent, Hutson/Guhle were great and I think that was Carrier's best game in a while, and despite his classic brainfarts Matheson was better today too.

Good win!

is it just me??? or does Laine suck right now?
He looks like the place that plays go to, to die?
The man desperately needs a playmaker!

Anyway, Cheers & go Habs
Laine is why Roy sits. You are forced to play 2 very fast skaters with him to compensate for the myriad of turnovers he makes. And I still kinda like Laine even though, right now, he's a pp specialist.

And yet he was the only captain from the Atlantic Division who was deemed not worthy enough to represent his country at the 4 Nations contraption. Bet you they won’t be able to ignore him again.

Thank God they did, that 4 nations break was huge for this team, and Nick, he's been other worldly since.

Habs are now 7-0-1 at home in their last 8 games

Gallagher and Dvorak with 10 points in their last 10 games....without PP time.
We shouldn't forget the work that line is doing, they are stepping up big as the 2nd line
They deserve some praises, we wouldn't be here without them.

On fire:
Suzuki with his 7th points in his last 3 games
Slafkovsky with his 4th points in the last 3 games

The work is not over.
7 games left
Let's go!!!
100% the veteran line has been A+for 10 + games

they deserve a lot of credit, and I shat on them, especially dvorak, a ton. good for them.

From what I've heard, Schaefer, Hagens, Misa, Desnoyers are all great players. Maybe not generational, but still great players. They're probably going to aim for McKenna next year also, then a quick retool to plug up holes and they're back in business. They already have #1 wing, top pairing D and #1 goalie.

I don't think they go full San Jose, but similar to the Habs. I'd say a 3 or 4 year rebuild+retool and they'll be competitive again. Maybe not dominant like the past (depending on draft lottery luck), but they'll fight for playoffs.
None of them are expected to be NHL ready for next season & would mark the 1st time since 2004 lockout no player from 1st round of recent draft starts in NHL

If the 2nd and 4th line wake up, we are primed for a nice cinderella run
To all the posters that watched Laine on a fairly regular basis on the other 2 teams:

Is it me, or has he lost speed and quickness? His skating is a little slower than I remember it, but his reflexes have deteriorated to the point that he looks like a 60-year-old out there.
