MSL did use Heineman on the top line for one game. It didn't stick.
He didn't stick with it.
Heineman would need a 5 game trial to allow for their individual games to mesh.
From what I saw last night he's currently a better play maker than Newhook.
He's certainly far better along the boards tying up plays and winning puck battles.
Suzuki's line is at it's best when they have a good fore check and are able to force turnovers.
They are one of the only lines that does create confusion particularly with Hutson out there.

A bloke mentioned that Laine was returning and managed to watch it a wee bit ago. It was a goalkeepers duel, impressive from them both. How week is the NHL now that teams in last still are not that far out of a playoff spot, you could see that coming but crikey!

Habs got lucky looking at Boxscore. Giving up 31 shots to non playoff team. Monty must have stood on his head for this win
Both goalkeepers performed splendidly.

Never watched game but sounds like our best game of season.
Not sure about that , we made mistakes and Monty just killed it to save us ( ha ha ) . BUT. We played a pretty good game, quite a few guys had solid efforts. It was definitely a fun game to watch and pretty exciting due in no small part our anticipation of Laine playing.

I know we got a banged up needing a change of scenery Laine, but he has been a star player and is in his prime. How often have we grabbed a guy like that ? If he can score 30 plus a season he will keep getting the love and would be smart to want to extend here.

might want to give him 30 games, he's been known to disappoint before.

I think it’s obvious from the interviews and the social media he doesn’t have the cookie cutter hockey player personality. He’s some kind of flamboyant introvert. We can absolutely win with him, he can help us tremendously, but he’s definitely not « plug and play ».

You dont put two guys in the wrong chair to with the hope one of them improve.
Problem is that currently there isn't a right guy for the second center chair. And Evans playing better than Dach so I would put the less wrong guy in that chair. At least fewer defensive gaffs. Sigh. Hughes had 3 years to fill that chair and we aren't any closer than before.

That's been the problem in general with Laine out. Getting him had everyone in their "chairs" so to speak. You could argue Newhook and Slaf switch but the top 6 guys are in the top 6 and the bottom are in the bottom. I thought this game was really well played by the guys up front as a result.

Laine was never going to be Sidney Crosby or McDavid, where he puts the team on his back and carries us to the playoffs. Getting him solidified out top 6 and kept guys like Andy, Gallagher, Armia, Evans, on and on and on, out, and playing in their right spots, something that we haven't had in the last 2-3 years.

When got hurt, everything got torpedoed and here we are.

Based on what we have the right guy for that chair is Dach. Is he playing like it? No. But we have no choice but to let him work through it. Hopefully Laine sparks something in him. I think he’s our guy until we acquire someone else.

Or…. As someone mentioned, maybe Laine can fit there and we can put Dach on the wing.

Evans on the 2nd didn't really work. May as well keep him in a place that make the team win and manage Dach's line minute through the game depending on how it perform. I mean line 1, 2, 3 and 4 are only 1, 2, 3 and 4 because of ice time. So play Evans with complementary players.

On KH, pre-season 2023 Dach was seen as a future 1C... That got derailed by the injury, not by KH inaction.

I agree, you dont have another option right now to play in the middle of Laine and Slaf. Evan should be kept with players that complement his style and increase that line ice time if the Dach line struggle.

Hughes should have acted as soon as Dach got derailed. Now we have this.

The problem is that neither Dach nor Laine have the skating style/quickness to be effective centers in the NHL. Both are much better wingers. Better to find that elusive center elsewhere than trying to fit the proverbial square peg into a round hole.

Dach was a really good center. I was really looking forward to seeing him. It sucks that he got hurt.

I don’t know if he can find his game again. I think he probably will but right now it’s really dark for him. He has no confidence at all and every mistake he makes seems to be in the back of the net. I’ve never seen a player so cursed.

And when was that? when he got injured? nobody could foresee that Dach would be that bad until he played this season. Given that there are no C available right now, can't blame KH either for not acting right now. So you are left with one option, ride Dach all season (or until a better option comes along) and see if he either turn it around or you need to get a C next summer.

I'm more worried about Slaf, at least Dach is cheap. That 8million/yr is going to look pretty silly if our golden boy doesn't start being the power forward they are paying him to be.

i'm starting to think that Slaf will need to be put back on the 1st line soon. That game where he got a goal and a pass, both play where developped with either Suzuki or CC....

Also, neither Laine and Dach are very quick right now, i'm wondering if Newhook on their RW woulndm't help them

Well, in a league where the value of centers is at a premium, you have to wonder why Chicago was willing to trade such a good center. Perhaps their assessment was different than yours.

If he can stay healthy, I see Dach as a potentially good power winger/forward. Nothing shabby about that. But seeing him as a #2 center is, at least to this writer, a bridge too far for this young player.

We know why.

They mismanaged his wrist injury badly. It was a mutual parting of the ways.

And he showed after he left that he was a really solid player. Yes, it was a small sample but the talent is there.

And unfortunately you may be right. He certainly doesn’t look like a second liner right now.
