I'll tell you why I think you're wrong. The media.

All the sycophants, and pay particular attention to the Trib guys, are taking little shots at Johnston. Like Despres and Bennett and to an extent, Neal, when this happens it's usually because there are rumblings that something is coming.

It's not that I'd love to be wrong, and you to be right. This organization just doesn't ever do the obvious thing that's staring them in the face. They love to prove to everybody that they are right, and everybody else is wrong.

Take the whole red carpet shenanigans tonight. Crosby comes out of the car with Kunitz and Scuderi. I guarantee you that's because of the heat those 2 are getting.

I mean seriously, when was the last time this team had a real NHL coach? Besides Therrien.

That's a good point.

I still don't have any faith or confidence in this team to do what's needed and hurt some feelings, but you're right about the media.

Nothing's ever wrong until the media starts to turn, and when the media starts to turn, something's likely already in the works. Like you said, it happened with Despres, Bennett, Neal, and Shero/Bylsma.

Shero and Bylsma especially, were being staunchly defended right up until the few months before they were canned. That's when the media pulled an abrupt 180 with regard to them. It'd be one thing if it was just that season, but this was several years after they should've been fired, but were still being defended through the media regardless of their productivity.

Right now it's actually really simple: Crosby putting up little to no points and literally not moving from zero in the standings should be a recipe for a firing. If they lost 2 of the next 3 games and Crosby still looks like he'd rather be fishing, I don't see how he can't be gone. If nothing else, how the hell can you continue on with this coach when the entire league is outpacing you badly in points?

Fleury wasn't great either tonight. He shouldn't get a pass. He literally had to make one good save, and that was the one off Weise.

You can see Maata is lacking in confidence right now. He looked indecisive and timid tonight.

the solution imo wouldn't be to play him less minutes on the 4th line, but to play him on a line where he'll be focused less. Even if he still only plays 8 minutes a night, let him get some shifts with the other centers. See what he does with a little bit of space. Get him a little confidence.
Hmm, play a skilled young winger with veteran skilled talent? That seems so simple and correct.....the Pens won't even give it a shot.

Hehehe I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. That was the first thing that went through my mind the second I saw it. Kunitz you can understand, but Scuderi?

2 shortside goals against tonight. That just can't happen from a National Hockey League caliber goalie.

I don't think Sid or Geno have "quit" on MJ. They may be playing in a very specific way as to highlight things they disagree with.

Confidence and foot speed. He's looked awful all camp/pre-season, as well as through the first few games.

If we're going to have any semblance of success, you've gotta put Maatta and Letang together. To Hell with the rest of the blueline. I'd rather have one strong pairing and two abysmal pairings than two terrible pairings and one abysmal pairing.

Here's to hoping that Maatta's just in a funk, because man, would it be a disaster for this team if he turned out to be more like the player we're seeing now, and less like the player we saw before his injuries/illness.

Hey man, when Jason Mackey starts taking little potshots at the coaches, you know something's brewing.

I almost guarantee you it's somebody's job that works for the team to go to sites like ours, among other social media sites, and take a temperature of the public perception of the team. Then they are tasked with finding ways to deflect the negative talk, and promote the positive.

I'll start worrying when they have a legitimate NHL coach behind the bench and Sid and Geno are still doing whatever it is they are doing.

When that coach actually gets here... now that's another story.

Exactly

Then the more important question is will it be too late by the time they do something and will they hire someone with backbone and from the outside who will look on this team with fresh eyeballs, absent and immune to preconceived notions of things.

I suspect the answers are 'maybe' and 'improbable'.

I honestly think Malkin and Crosby are trying to get that coach fired, and if they are doing that, that is ****ed up, no matter how bad MJ is. Show some ****ing heart.

The "whats wrong in Pittsburgh?" narrative is certainly in the preliminary stages in the hockey media. Just a flooded engine thats barely turning over right now. The more losses with Sid going pointless will bring that to a purring motor.

Heard it on SN's pregame where MacLean countered it with "C'mon this is Sid were talking about" and just now on the Canuck's game. They had a stat with regular season wins for a goalie for Miller and MAF was on the list. Play by play guy said "and Fleury's win number didn't go up tonight. some rumblings there in Pittsburgh".

ETA: SN's highlights right now "Johnston's gotta be on the hot seat"
