Do Wild sign a two-way goalie to help out Wally until Gus comes back from hip surgery?! Do they trade for one?

This is why I don't think either W or Gus gets traded from the Wild to Detroit.
I didn't think so at first, but in a Larkin trade I think Gus has to be part of it, unless Detroit is willing to take on someone like Hartman or there's a ton of other dominoes happening afterwards for the Wild.

Slap Larkin's cap hit on the Wild and they still need to go out and get a top 6 winger as they currently only have two - the math ain't mathing with the cap. But if you remove Gus and sign someone like Marchment, they could just about do it.

They need to shed cap regardless and Gus happens to be one of their better trade pieces at the same time. I don't think that the injury necessarily means he couldn't be traded. It's not a big deal if someone else has the net for a month or two, especially if Gibson is still there for 1 more year. Starting the year with Gibson, then trading him during the season would make sense in this scenario. Or just trade Gibson now and get someone else, give a guy like Montembeault the opportunity.

I doubt Gibson would stay on a retooling team when he finally has the freedom to choose where to go next off-season. You've got Florida sitting there waiting with open arms.

They're gonna need a starting goalie until one of their goalie prospects are ready, and adding Gus allows them to weaponize their other goalies like Gibson and Cossa for assets they ideally should've got in a Larkin trade but couldn't because their hands were tied with the NTC.

to Minnesota Wild
Pyotr Kochetkov (1y @ $2.0m)

to Carolina Hurricanes
2027 MIN 6th round pick

Wallstedt Kochetkov until Gustavsson is healthy, then trade or waive Kochetkov (or run 3 goalies). If Wallstedt traded this summer, a goalie comes back in the deal or is signed in free agency. That new guy and Kochetkov to start the season.

Hurricanes sign a goalie in free agency (Freddy Andersen?) to pair with Bussi for next year.

Not sure why Minneosta would go after Montembeault, Korpisalo, Skinner or any other pricey option that would hurt their cap space for a temporary situation.

There could be interesting options on the waiver wire during training camp. Maybe a Kaapo Kähkönen reunion?

Anyway, they'll probably need a AHL veteran to split the job with either Wutzke, Mercer or Rousseau in Iowa, unless they plan to bring back Cal Peterson or Samuel Hlavaj.

Gus is out long term, so no it’s not
They’re not going to hold onto two goalies forever because of an injury to start the season.

I’d imagine they pick up a 3G candidate to hold them over for a couple of months and make a deal sooner than later.
