Let's say that the writing is on the wall. It's a foregone conclusion that we won't be able to resign Willy and build a competitive, cap complient team.

Try to put recency bias behind you as Willy is on a heater. Easy question: Trade Willy or Mitch.

Marner is a weak, slow player. He feasts during the regular season when intensity wanes from game to game. He doesn’t have the speed or strength to battle through when time and space closes.

With Matthews struggling right now, you would think maybe his $11mil teammate would be able to fill that void, but it’s Knies that has stepped up.

It’s time to send this twerp packing

Should have been:

Nylander at 2023 draft with extension to a team like Caps for 8thOA + another quality piece

Matthews deal the moment he wanted his garbage 4 year 13.25M deal (get 2 1sts+ prospects back)

Shanny cleaned out from here and a retool/rebuild for the next 2-3 years being in place

Since we decided to try to contend, I dont see either Nylander or Marner good enough at 10M-13M ti help this team win come playoffs, so we will be playing out two years with 1st round exits

There's only 1 real answer. You keep both.

And this board is basically 100% recency bias.

I voted based on the premise of the thread and using the poll options but this is my outlook as well. We keep both, we deal with the cap for one year, then Tavares’ deal is up.

If Matthews wants a garbage deal why is anyone paying 2 firsts+ for him? seems weird.

A lot of trade proposals people will post are just fantasy.

I also expect player evaluation to be terrible in this thread.

Marner = NMC so it could only be Nylander.

While true, we can clearly see when Matthews is not scoring, Marner is not collecting assists, you don't see him stepping up.

If we trade Nylander now, we'll get 1st back we flip for rental at trade deadline.

Marner is already overpaid, split him and Matthews, resign Nylander.

Good news is you can let either test UFA. Only Leafs could give RFA Marner $11M.

How much can he realistically get from a mad GM as UFA?

11.5 ? 12 ? He can stay in his hometown, keep his endorsement deals in place, get a frontloaded contract etc.

32 teams in the league, but I have a hard time seeing any non-leaf team paying McDavid money for Mitch

They are not worth the $11-$12M they will both demand on their new contracts. They both have to be traded. Enough is enough. This team is going nowhere. They desperately need a goalie and competent D.

Yeah let’s trade 2 of our best 3 players for futures and return to being f***ing garbage.

The takes here are ridiculous lately

Other teams would believe that he would bounce back and be a top 5 player, which he hasnt done so far this year (borderline top 20 again this year)

Matthews the more he plays like this, the lower his value around the league

We are a 1st round exit team, we are the worst contender in the league

The time to rebuild/retool was here and we blew it to go and try to contend with the same 4 guys who always choke hard in the playoffs irrespective of goaltending/defense (bob, price, rask, korp/merzlikins, vas)

The leafs are a paper tiger this year, with weak defense and the same 4 guys alla year older

Because according to you the team is on a roll, and will go on an even bigger roll and take over 1st place some time in January, right?
Or because after two losses the idea of trading the best players on a perennial top team in the league seems....odd? People only start these threads after a couple of losses. Don't see them much after the 4 game winning streaks.

Why would other teams think this?

And if they do, I trust them over a random fan like you...

I don't understand the logic of "he is overpaid, but trust me other teams won't notice, so we can get amazing assets for him"

What is your solution then? We overpaid the crap out of him vs his comparables, he declines in play for a 2nd straight year, and we pretend that he is good and did us good by taking his deal?

Your telling me there was no market for Auston Matthews in July 2023? Do you know how absurd that sounds

Probably almost as absurd as saying he will be overpaid, but someone else should do it and give up premium assets to do it.

I first broached the idea of trading Marner after our humiliating 1st round loss to MTL. When I'm evaluating this team and it's players, I don't focus on 4 game streaks during the regular season, it's the 1-7 playoff round record that speaks volumes and that strongly suggests that it's time to stop betting on this core.

Edit - weren't you the one telling me the other day how rosy things were? I seem to remember the phrase "9 points in 5 games" and BTW, I was telling you then the team was playing poorly.

Maybe because 5 regulation wins in 19 games puts that 4 game win streak into perspective? That perennial top team being a perennial playoff disaster also adds fuel to the fire

How is he not overpaid?

21 pts in 19 games. He isnt top 10 in pt/ppg this year again.

He is still on 11.634M so he is overpaid on that deal right now vs 13.25M which begins next year.

If his production improves then he is worth his deal. If he is a 85-95 pt player only in the highest scoring league since the early 90s then he is not fairly paid

Matthews has not been a top 10 player in the league for close to 100 games now (74 i think last year and 19 this year). He has to step up if he wants to pretend he is one of the best players in the league and take 13M
