Guest thread : how were these boards before Leafs official website boards folded?

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
I used to post on the old Leaf boards occasionally but eventually just stopped as there was never much going it seemed. I found this place during the 2004 World Cup.
Way back from ‘99 and for a few years afterwards I was on the the old Usenet leafs board , anyone remember that?

Yup, I was pretty active on there. I still check in on the Montreal one from time to time. They seem to be the only ones left still keeping it alive.

There was a lot less trolling here a decade ago. And far less characters, other than Mr. Scarface!

I was a member of "thepenaltybox" or something like that way back when. I actually stopped watching hockey for quite a while during the dead puck era because it was so boring. I came back though. Party because it got better and partly because I lowered my expectations.
Same here. PenaltyBox, watched hockey but not as much as I used to in the 70s, 80s, 90's, and early 2000s, came back when scoring came back again.

I posted in several teams' boards in the NHL forums. Some of them had very few posters.

The thing I remember most about the Leafs' one was how negative it got near the end, mainly massive criticism of Leafs' management.

The Leafs board closed before at least some of the others, and my first thought was that Leaf management had something to do with it. I haven't ruled that out.

How long ago?

I've been on HFBoards since ~2008 according to my profile, and may have had an earlier profile as well. As far as I recall, HFBoards has always had a lot of members and a very active forum. I don't recall noticing an "influx" of new users when the NHL teams forums may have closed.
The Pens board closed a couple of years ago. You could post on multiple teams message boards with 1 username.

Never used the Leafs board. Maybe posted on Reddit once or twice. The only sizable fanbase here that I find is fairly absent due to a competing board is Calgary. I've used the board since maybe 2005 to get info, but didn't sign up until 2009.

Why do I get the feeling the answer the OP is looking for is that this place got a lot dumber after those boards folded.

Anyway, nice of him to make a random thread and then disappear. Guess they got their answer.

I was here on dial up before the big 2002 makeover!
I can’t imagine how much I billed clients over the years wasting my time on here. Sadly, COVID killed my consulting business and it doesn’t look like it’s coming back any time soon. I certainly post much less now that I’m not sitting in front of my laptop all day.

Such a perfect time waster...

You and @Volcanologist were ones that came to mind for early posters with ACC and Mess.

I started being active here during the great lockout for updates, but had an account prior mostly to hang out in the equipment area. Not sure when it was created, but I don't think it was 2002

I like LeafsConnected in addition to this one. This one is fine in it's own way.

I came here around '06 from ESPN and the Leafs official boards. ESPN was like the wild west; the Leafs official board was run in a way that would have made the East German Stasi extremely proud. I haven't really posted here in years so I figured I'd check the place out and see what the vibe is like here now.
