Guest thread : how were these boards before Leafs official website boards folded?

We were here before 2002 but the board was recycled/rebuilt in 2002.

And of course Cornflake's
Ah yes the good ole days, don't see alot of the old schoolers around, whatever happened to Darth?

I came from the Sportsnet forums when they closed. That place was an experience.

When you got an infraction/suspension, you had to make an apology thread upon your return and they basically turned into a full on attack of the person posting the apology. Anyone remember KIR?

I was a member of "thepenaltybox" or something like that way back when. I actually stopped watching hockey for quite a while during the dead puck era because it was so boring. I came back though. Party because it got better and partly because I lowered my expectations.

Not that I miss them but where have the advanced stats gone? Turns out it really was a fad like spinners, conkers and pyramid power. Or does my ignore list coincide with the posters who still incessantly quote eye-of-the-beholder advanced stats. My favourite: heat zone maps where someone would post one and say "look at this heat zone map, no wonder the Leafs lost" like there was anything to read into it.

pyramid power is real. Keefe should look into it :scared:

Penalty Box still exists to this day but it's a ghost town. The site's owners allowed their obnoxious nephew(s) drive most people away.

it started as a newsgroup way back(called the QZ or quote zone) and then became an actual chatboard around 1999 or so, it was eventually absorbed into the NHL Network which screwed the whole thing up royally, they changed the formatting several times and no matter what it was full of glitches and heavy handed moderation, much too heavy handed for most of the people who were around for awhile. A new board sprang up started by members which was pretty good for awhile, but there was very little moderation and eventually that board became a very cliquey kind of place bogged down by groupthink, the moderation was driven by who approved of who and so on and a certain kind of cultishness negativity palled over the whole thing. I posted there right up until about 18 months ago, it seemed it was no longer about hockey.

broads?

The NHL boards were crap, they must have folded due to nonparticpation. I could remember seeing some GDT's of other teams. less than 100 posts on average. 2 or 3 guys posting on some bad nights, for some teams.

I used to post on the old Leaf boards occasionally but eventually just stopped as there was never much going it seemed. I found this place during the 2004 World Cup.
Way back from ‘99 and for a few years afterwards I was on the the old Usenet leafs board , anyone remember that?

Not sure about other boards but this place was much better before the invention of Twitter and the heavy reliance some have with advanced stats.

Has anyone been here longer than @Mess and I?

I've been here since 2002 (Grade 10), though I lost the old moniker.

Started on penaltybox/tmlfans, I was in the sim league affiliated with it (hhhockey). Moved here when I started to get obsessed with the draft, almost 2 decades later here we are!

I thought so. The 1224 in my name was my original seat at The ACC in 1999 and I only sat there for those 17 games. We moved the next season and then to our current seats after the Lockout.

Woah, that's neat. I never would have connected your username meaning.

I joined here in 2009 when I was I think 13 or 14 so no forum experience before that... I often have to remind myself of my age when I started here considering some of the opinions...

This was always THE prospect board and the main boards were always the best anywhere. Team subs weren’t as popular as they are now, but still top shelf amongst fan boards.

Other Boards of note or infamy from pre 2002:
TMLfans
Rivals
Canoe Sports boards. (Cess pool but an example of what a board would be like without moderation.

(I miss the arcade that was on here.. mini pool obsession)

There was one for most teams...

How long ago?

I've been on HFBoards since ~2008 according to my profile, and may have had an earlier profile as well. As far as I recall, HFBoards has always had a lot of members and a very active forum. I don't recall noticing an "influx" of new users when the NHL teams forums may have closed.
