No interest in any Penguins aside from Pettersson and Acciari as the 4th-line right-shot PK C the team is obsessed with landing.

Canucks would have to add, but can definitely see the Penguins being far more interested in Hoglander than other selling teams.

I don't think the Canucks would have to add unless they are getting the Penguins, or a 3rd party, to retain. Despite Hoglander's inconsistency, young cost-controlled NHLers are worth a lot. GMs value them far more than a lot of fans do. Hell, Dubas thought Michael Bunting was positive value in the Guentzel trade.

Plus if Dubas is actually focused on getting young NHLers back then he’s limiting the pool of buyers - needs to find young players good enough to be worth Pettersson but not so good that their team doesn’t want to give them up going into a playoff run. Not sure there are many of those.

Exactly. Canucks have Hoglander and, depending on the person, Raty & Bains. Stars, as another example, have Back & Bourque. Jets have Kupari & Gustafsson but would almost assuredly not part with Perfetti.

I think he needs to trade him soon so there's a mix of teams bidding. those that are trying to save their season AND those looking to beef up their backend for a playoff run. It seems like if we're going after Pettersson, Soucy (assuming he'd waive his NTC) should be part of the package going the other way.

That's really not a safe assumption.

I think a deal between Pettersson and Hoglander would be great; hopefully Canucks would have an idea of what Pettersson's contract number is and is comfortable trading for that.

Yeah. Not sure he’d leave for a sinking ship. If they can acquire Pettersson, my inclination would be to dump Desharnais for what it costs and roll with Pettersson-Myers and Soucy-Brannstrom. Soucy had a rough start but seems to be turning the corner and would benefit from playing with a better puck mover.

I'd be surprised if the Canucks took away from their depth rather than purely add to it. Like you show here, Pettersson would allow them to divide up the icetime evenly, like last season.

the pens missing is good news for canucks fans who think pettersson is the answer to the blue line problems but bad news in that i don't see why they'd move him early. it's not a zadorov situation where he's gotta be moved because he's a problem in the room
Probably don’t want Sid to go super nova and then take them out of the unplanned tank. You weaken the team so much that no matter how well Sid does, it’s not enough to derail the unplanned tank.

Trade Forbort, not Desharnais

Desharnais experiment needs more time

He’s better than Forborr and Juulsen for sure
I doubt they trade Forbort given that organizations usually show a bit of respect to vets they sign, but the Juulsen experiment probably needs to end at this point. There was a blip of positive play last year for 2 months, but everything before and after that suggests he isn't reliable enough at the NHL level.

Agree on Desharnais but if we don't see improvement by the deadline, yeah, he's someone they should probably cut their losses on.

Petterson is on the low end of what the Canucks need to make that jump into contender status. Ideally, you get someone who's closer to what Noah Hanafin is for Vegas, but I'm not sure that caliber of player is going to be available this year (and might be more expensive than last year).

The Canucks have also been extremely good at identifying & developing high quality bottom 6 players in free agency over the last couple years. Given that strength, dealing Hoglander for an upgrade on defense has to be on the table.

oh no doubt, it would be a difficult conversation with a far from certain outcome. Just seemed like it would make extending Pettersson easier if that was a goal. It's probably wishful thinking, but I do think any acquisition target is going to be a guy they see being a long(ish) term fit.

Who's playing their off side in this situation? I don't recall if it was Soucy or Cole who played on the right side when they were paired together last season.

More likely scenario involving a Soucy trade would be in the off-season. Goes from a full-NTC to a 12-NTC. I don't see them depleting their defensive depth for a rental.

Cole played on his off-side when paired with Zadorov. Brannstrom can play on the right side and he played one game there this season when Forbort came back. However, he made a notable mistake when he seemingly forgot what side he was on.

Provorov will almost certainly be available, and would be a great addition; though not likely a guy who would want to be here beyond this year.

i think pettersson would help this defense in the short term but he's turning 29 and he's already slowed down a lot. i wouldn't want to commit to him long term. given that i dunno he's worth spending significant assets on unless he's like the last piece of the puzzle

if they're gonna get a dman i'd rather they try to get someone like romanov, borgen or jiricek that can be part of this team for at least the next 3-4 seasons beyond this one even if it comes at a higher cost
