I quite like Lafreniere as the return for Miller. I think he has the highest upside and would likely score the most points of any asset involved in the deal over the duration of their signed contracts.

That he is winger shouldn’t really matter. They shouldn’t force a trade for position in a year that they don’t really look ready to contend. They should focus on getting the best possible player they can get and then sort out the supporting cast afterwards.

I don't necessarily disagree...not knowing the potential alternatives on the table and knowing that the Rangers are pretty much a fixture in a Miller deal, I can't really think of any other players I'd rather have off their roster (realistically) than Lafreniere...I've just never been a huge fan of his. I like him better than the defensemen they potentially have available and he could be a good winger for EP, but I was admittedly hoping for a NJ package when Nemec/Mercer was floated.

He ain’t a centre and has never been a centre when it’s relevant to professional hockey. He does make a lot of sense as a target given all the rumoured interest and connections.

However, it’s not like Lafrenière is without risk. He’s having another middling season and signed for a very long time. You have to be extremely sure that it’s the environment holding him back.

If there were other pieces, mostly futures, I would if those would be flipped for a 2nd line centre. Even one on a short term contract would be worthwhile.

Or they try to go after a 2C in UFA like Bennett at around 6ish MM (Stephenson contract comparable production wise at least). Could be OUT: Miller Boeser IN: Laf (trade) Bennett (UFA). Use futures from Boeser deal to try and find a LD2 solution.

Always risky going into free agent market and not getting your guy but it's a path that could be looked at.

One moment I'm like "trade this bum" and the other moment I'm like "what if this is all a distraction from the deeper issues with this team?"

Teams can win with players who are rivals of each other. That internal competitiveness might even be beneficial.

At the end of the day, each player needs to get his shit together. Miller needs to dial down the drama, and Pettersson needs stop letting outside noise shut down his game. They both need to learn how to keep their focus in their own ways. Trade either one of them and those issues will remain with the player who stays.

They’ve done it before. Get Laf for Miller then flip Boeser for a C or a 1st that you can flip….

At the same time, given they love Miller and obviously want to compete, the fact it has gotten to this point means it’s probably more than just Miller and Pettersson not liking each other - otherwise you’d think they’d just wait until the offseason. But who knows what it is.

My guess is that its more than just EP...strong personalities that can push into inappropriate behaviors can drain on people...my guess is that its the players who have been around Miller for several years are just tiring of the exhausting nature of someone so intense, abrasive and emotive.

He doesn't have anywhere near the offensive talent as Boeser though. Boeser had almost 2x the number of PP points in his first season (when he led the team in scoring as a rookie) than Lafreneire has had in his career to date. Yes. And other than when he's been stapled to Panarin and Trocheck he's looked pretty average. IMO.

If Lafreniere hadn't been 1OA, nobody would be clamoring for him like they do.

I wonder if Dallas would consider something around Hintz. His play has fallen off a bit since he signed his big deal, and he’s running a high shooting percentage this year masking a bigger drop off in points.

Canucks would be taking the worse player back but one that fills a need and is a few years younger. Cap basically matches too.

I like that. Love the speed and rush game that Hintz offers. He's made of glass and will drive you nuts by being a gametime decision in 20% of the games though.

He's great on faceoffs its just that Dallas always has two FO guys on every line so that it's all strong sided draws so his volume is down.

Not just an environment change. He’s only 23 years old so he also had the potential to develop further. That’s why I like the target. Whether he actually develops further is anyone’s guess, but he could develop significantly and be a 80-100 point winger.

Who knows...player development is pretty chaotic. late bloomers usually fall between the cracks and grow their way out despite limited opportunity. Obviously not the case here as Lafreniere was given all the chances a 1OA always get. Sometimes late bloomers just don't have the size/strength to compete with men...also not the case with Lafreniere. With almost 400 NHL games played to date, i wouldn't be betting on some massive level up with this player.
