Grub's Canucks & NHL News, Rumours, and & Fantasy GM | Roll with the Changes

Also it’s all relative, he might believe his market value is 15M and taking 14 is a cut.

Or maybe his agent was holding out.

With Landeskog coming back, the Avalanche had to figure out how to get under the cap. So someone had to go.

I wouldn't because I think that deal instantly makes Buffalo a much, much better team and that 1st rounder probably ends up around the 10th overall pick, and we're not getting anywhere close to a Pettersson replacement with the 10th pick.

Cozens has legitimately 0 value after how last season and this have gone; he only has 1 good season in his career, Byram is nice but his upside is probably a #2 at this point - I'm not dealing my center that's a year removed from putting up 90 points while being elite defensively for that garbage package.
Buffalo is the 3rd worst team in the league right now, EP is running at a 50-60 point clip all for the bargain price of $11.6m...a top 10 pick and two decent young players? Feed me that all day long.

You aren't getting Tage Thompson, I'd throw that out the window. One of Byram/Power ... doubt they'd part with Tuch (and he's pretty old) so that leaves Cozens, and then hopefully a draft pick. Not sure what else works from Buffalo.

I would hope Columbus gets in on this.

Nah.. I wouldn't rely on Power for any matchups ... he is soft.. and doesn't use his size at all. If you get him his worth is going to be transitioning the puck up the ice , breaking down defenses with his skating , his passing and his shot is improving pretty significantly.
He's 22 years old, Hedman was overpowered his first few years in the league...you hope they figure it out and with the proper coaching I'm sure he will too.

I've been high on Peyton Krebs since his draft year but I'm sure Buffalo would throw him in for free.

His offense has stalled at the NHL level but I think he would be a good 3rd liner.

The big unanswered question is whether he sicced Miller on Pettersson. If true, that alone is a fireable offense.
Ya, that would have been a terrible decision if true. But I don’t think the rumour is overly credible. It doesn’t really make sense given that Miller was benched when he was trying to “coach” Petey on the penalty kill the game before the LOA, and then obviously things blew up further from there. So I think the opposite is actually true, and that the coaching staff has told Miller to shut up and play, to an extent.

I’d much rather have Byram than Power. Power is trending towards a Dougie Hamilton type which isn’t really what this team needs.

Power is also incredibly soft and seeing big guys who are soft is extremely infuriating to watch.

Any defenceman meant to be a significant piece in a package for Pettersson needs to be at least a solid 3D and able to survive a Stanley cup playoff run.

I don’t think Bryam checks both of those boxes.

He was an integral part of the Avs cup winning team. And he was legitimately the best defender during those finals. Don’t think that last line has any merit.

Byram’s concussion history is definitely a concern, but he’s been healthy for over 1.5 years now and he’s been in a couple of fights since his return. The concussion he sustained from Horvat was a result of an accumulation of concussions in which he never really recovered from until he really took the time to recover and he’s been fine since.

Hedman and Power have are fundamentally different players. The only common trait is their size and offense. He’s more of a Dougie Hamilton, which isn’t a knock to be honest, but not something our team needs.

Projecting tall defenceman at a young age is really difficult. Sometimes they burst on the scene and regress (Tyler Myers), sometimes they take a little while to figure it out (Chris Pronger, Zdeno Chara), and sometimes they were never actually any good (Rasmus Ristolainen).

I also feel that the vast majority of people have no idea how to evaluate defencemen.

I’d probably roll the dice on Owen Power. The upside is immense and he would provide some insulation in-case Hughes wants to leave when his contract is up.

Byram has literally done that?

You’re right about his run with the Avs.

My concern is the concussion history and the impact of the Canucks schedule and the abuse defenders like Hughes, Hronek will take.

It’s the same concern I have about Petterssons knee and the unknown long term impact it will have.

There's definitely truth to that. And even if you can, it will be impossible to project how each player develops.

At the end its on them.

I wouldn't count out Power being a good defender in the future - especially with that size and reach.

I do think its highly unlikely he will have any sort of physicality like a Hedman. Hedman even as a rookie IIRC dropped the gloves with Andrew Ladd. He has some mean streak in him I don't see in Power. And that seldom changes.

He’s also got six more years after this year at 8.3 which should be good value with a rising cap.

Who did the rumour that come from again? I thought it was Friedman which would give it some credibility. There was no mention of Tocchet though if I recall correctly, just that "someone" had done so. I honestly would not be shocked if it was Alvinn.

This was obviously autocomplete but I kind love it.

Yeah, it was Friedman. The gist was the organization were encouraging the leadership group to get Pettersson going and give him a bit of a push.

Stupid phone!

Tyler Myers won the Calder as a rookie in Buffalo. A big 'no' to Owen Power, who projects about the same, even on his good days.

Just can't see Pettersson going to Buffalo, unless they're prepared to dramatically overpay and take on his entire $11.7m salary. At the end of the day, the Sabres are one of the NHL's 'small market teams'.

I suppose Rantenan is proof that anyone can be traded. But the big difference is that Rantanen is an impending UFA. You'd have to be imbibing magic mushrooms to think that the long-term, expensive contracts for Pettersson and Miller won't be huge problems when it comes to trading them.
