There was a case to be made last year that swapping Willander for Jiricek made sense because Jiricek better fit the Canucks’ timeline, but given their respective development I’m not sure that’s even the case at this stage.

Trying to come up with a comparable situation where a highly drafted prospect ends up in total limbo like this (not able to get opportunity in NHL, not playing full time in AHL), with clear disagreements between player/agent and team on where they should be, where the player gets moved to another opportunity and then they go on to reach their potential. Just seems like it's usually a big hit for the player's value as their development gets hampered so early into their post draft career.

Yes it is. Is this a joke. Big right handed defender that has put up really good stats in the AHL, for a small diminutive winger who the heck would make that trade. Are you trading Willander for Hoglander. They drafted him 6th overall in 2022.
Nope no joke, Jiricek isn’t on the same level as some of the promising prospects coming up, I’d rate Willander higher than him, his value is sinking, I wouldn’t give up on him if he were a Canuck but look how fast the Brannstroms, Lundqvist and Fabbros. values drop off so fast
Jiricek is nothing more than a high drafted who has top 4 projection, not looking like top pairing

One mismanaged year of development from both team and Player/Agent view can mess up a guys development. Should have been in the A longer last season once the team saw his warts in his game.

Jiricek and his agent should understand that Jarmo is gone. So him being a former first means little to Waddle. And if dealt that 6OA draft status won’t mean much to another club if he doesn’t produce. That draft status buys you time with your GM and team, but once that person is gone, no one is on the hook for you.

Meanwhile developing nicely in Cleveland defenceman Denton Mateychuk from the 22 draft

What an awful draft class at the top

During his draft year I remember seeing a pretty long-length interview with Mateychuk and the kid at age 17 came across better than most 10 year NHL vets. Smart guy. Not surprised he’s doing well and is making the most of his talent.

Does something around the Nucks 2025 1st get it done for Jiricek?

Doubtful as his services will be highly valued.

Maybe throw Hoglander into the mix for the deal.

The suggestions of trading him are just as silly as the suggestions they might trade either of those fwds.

Doubt they're trying to or going to trade either of the defensemen they just signed and haven't played twenty games with the franchise, they fit the mold the organization/coaches clearly want, are cheap, can both pk and have the tools to be effective relative to cost.

Hoglander seems like the most likely one on the way out if/when necessary.
Hoglander alone isn’t going to make up the money portion unless they’re only making like one trade before the deadline.

If they want to make multiple moves, there will have to be outgoing salary.

Vector outlined it already -> Hoglander + cheaper contract for a defense upgrade now allows you to keep accruing the capspace (5-5.5M around the TDL) necessary to make a deal without having to send a bigger contract out.

Kind of depends on the attitude of Jiricek. If he has the right attitude might be worth it but he has to accept playing in the A and working in his warts to the satisfaction of the Manny before he’d get a call up.

Right now, hard to say.

Feel like Hoglander + 2025 1st is too much for Jiricek's current value. Would definitely do Hoglander + something else though. Loved Jiricek during his draft year liked him more than Nemec.

I'm very much in the "address the defense problem first" camp, but I'd be curious if Utah would be open to a Hoglander+ for Crouse swap with some salary retention.

Crouse has fallen off hard this season and maybe could use a change of scenery. Obviously much bigger and better defensively than Hogs.

Joshua makes Crouse “redundant” tbh. Probably better to use that cap space for more of a needle mover.

While I like the idea, I don’t know if there’s a way to structure a deal to make his contract palatable for this season nor any reason for Utah to sell him when his value is at the lowest.

We saw last night that Hronek could drive a great second pair. Who could the Canucks find who would make a good bargain partner for Hughes—a guy with decent-but-not-great wheels, good defensive IQ, not a point producer and so not a high cap hit.

Put Hughes and Hronek together when the team needs to get a late goal. Otherwise, create two terrific pairs. Did Anaheim do something like that with Niedermayer and Pronger?

It would have to be a solid ++ added to Hoglander to get Crouse. I'd love to see Lawson Crouse here.

No to Zack MacEwen. That dude is going to get pulverized in a fight one of these days.

Something with Hoglander as the main piece from the Canucks might fetch someone like Greenway, if the Sabres were inclined to move on from him. I don't see how a Crouse deal comes together.

I agree that's why I said a ++. He's having a bad start but he's a 20 goal scorer here all day. He can play in all three zones, is a tenacious hitter, solid penalty killer and a capable fighter.

Hoglander isn't going anywhere. We just resigned him and his value is at an all time low.

Give it time. He'll suddenly rebound and will be a fan favorite again in no time just when the trade deadline hits and he's traded for a bag of pucks.

Can’t imagine Hoglander is with the Nucks for much longer.

He’s gone by the TDL at the latest. Sooner once Boeser and Miller are back.
after xmas probably.

Id honestly claim him. Would be nice on the 4th line/13F. Probably send one of Bains/Raty/Sasson back down.

I’m sure Demko wouldn’t mind having his BFF back.
i rather have him than bains tbh.

Absolutely, he'd be unreal riding shotgun with Miller and Boeser.
