Missed this from yesterday. Recap of Rick Dhaliwal's interview with Canucks Central.

Pettersson
  • Very interesting that Allvin went so hard on Pettersson in the interview
  • Clearly not happy with him; don’t say those things publicly
  • Thinks this was an indirect way to get other teams to call with offers just in case they eventually decide to trade him
  • Around the league, Allvin’s comments on Pettersson made people take notice
  • If he was in Pettersson camp, would not be very happy with the interview
  • Thinks Canucks management and coaches expect Pettersson to be a little bit like Crosby when it comes to practice and preparation; doesn’t think that’s going to happen because Pettersson is wired differently
  • Make no mistake, Jim Rutherford runs this team; Allvin sounded a lot like Rutherford; management wanted to send a message to the players
  • Doesn’t think the Canucks would win a Pettersson trade
Outside Noise
  • Canucks need to quiet it and Allvin intensified it
  • Talks about when Rutherford went on Canucks Central and blasted Boudreau a few years ago; was also done to get the message out
Miller
  • When he was on a leave of absence, teams called the Canucks about acquiring him
  • Canucks made the agent very aware that they were getting calls but it was made clear to the Canucks that Miller was not going to ask for a trade
  • Doesn’t see Miller asking out but that won’t stop teams from calling about him; knows he hasn’t asked out
  • Teams call about other teams good players all the time
  • Miller controls the process due to his NMC
  • No hearing that the Canucks are proactive
Boeser
  • Obviously have been talking
  • Not hearing an extension is close or imminent; there is work to do
  • Term could be the issue
  • Canucks probably have an internal deadline and if they don’t have an extension done by then, they will trade him; don’t want him to leave for nothing as a UFA
  • Don’t want to get burned like with Zadorov; knew they couldn’t re-sign Lindholm early but eventually got to what Zadorov wanted but was too late
  • Only have three significant UFA players
Defensive Corps
  • Management needs to take responsibility for the poor defence
  • No one in Abbotsford is anywhere close
Pettersson’s Injury
  • Has an upper-body injury and nothing else
  • Could be back soon
Hughes’ Injury
  • Would not be surprised if Hughes comes back way sooner than the week-to-week timelines being given out
  • Had a source that said Hughes could be day-to-day
  • Return is not too far away
Willander & Lekkerimaki
  • Allvin will visit Ottawa on Thursday
  • Will be surprised if Willander doesn’t sign with the Canucks after his NCAA season is over
Making Trades
  • Canucks probably haven’t made a trade because they have two stud prospects and Canucks are not comfortable trading either right now
  • Have no assets to make a trade
  • Teams know the Canucks “are in a pickle”
  • Management team believed in this core and thought they would do the same things they did last season and are surprised at the lack of consistency and lack of production from star players

Injuries
  • Hughes’ injury isn’t believe to be extensive
  • Pettersson is more game-to-game
  • Ray points out that with Hughes & Hronek out, the Canucks are missing 45 minutes of defencemen
Canucks Shopping for a Top-4 Defenceman
  • Openly shopping for a top-4 defenceman
  • The feedback Dreger has got from GMs that he’s talked to is that there’s not a match for a defenceman the Canucks want because the players and pieces the Canucks are offering aren’t good enough to make the deal
  • Ray thinks there’s a higher level of urgency to add a defenceman
  • Has a feel that something has to get pushed and get done
  • Teams with defencemen are willing to wait to get a better deal out of someone else

SOB is puffy. But interesting take from someone who played with both guys. Always liked Brad Richardson and wanted the team to keep him around.

Huge fan of Brad Richardson.

Also, every time O'Brien tells a story about his partying, not listening or understanding coaches, and habits you understand why his career completely fizzled and he looks the way he does.

I'd move on from Garland if we are barely in/fighting for a playoff spot.
Should have some value, would free cap for next year as well, can't really have a third line with that much cap when our d is piss poor

He leads all forwards in total and 5v5 ice time. He's decidedly not a 3rd liner player despite who his linemates are occasionally.

Not a fan of the motivation-by-negging approach. Was stupid with Boudreau as well. Management has some welcome positive qualities but seems a little obtuse when it comes to maximizing human performance.

I'm not yet on the retool bandwagon but if I was:

A. I'd trade Miller, Boeser, and Demko for younger top 6 centre and top 4 D-man
B. Hope Lekkerimaki can replace Boeser's production within 2 years
C. Sign Lankinen to an extension while drafting/developing his younger replacement
D. Use excess cap space (from A + salary of replaced roster spot ($1.5M)) to acquire a $4M third line right handed centre. This may be through free agency or trade.
E. Keep depth players that have clearly shown they can thrive within tocchet's system (Sherwood, Blueger, Garland, Joshua)

It’s going to be interesting moving forward. Trading either Petey or Miller is going to really set back this team, and frankly, I can’t see them genuinely competing after making a trade of that type. And I think they know this.

So they are going to wait it out and hope things can be resolved between the two. But things may not. And they can only hold on for so long with the team in this current state.

Fascinating.

Do we have to keep Tocchet? 😂 I think a coach that could coach an entire team would be better. Trading Pettersson, you better get an absolute haul. No futures either. Hughes two years away from free agency. He's not going to get through more years of losing.

Management loves Tocchet and Tocchet is Miller's favourite and Petey is not. It's not going to resolve between the two when the coach takes sides.

Hughes would be fine with a retool but likely not a rebuild.

Bringing in top 6 centre, a top 4 D man, a high end 3C while losing Boeser, Miller, and Demko is a retool aimed at fixing the roster balance, eliminating any perceived friction in the room, and winning now.

Myers leads all canucks rhd in time on ice, it doesn't make him a top pairing dman or even a 3/4.

Hes going to cap out with a career high of around 60/65ish points this year. Thats a peak career tweener year. You can sell high on it, get cap space, prospects, picks or even a dman.

The overall benefits on something like this outweighs what he should be on the team, a 3rd liner.

The team, Miller, Pettersson and Tocchet hand all
Had success together, so not sure why it’s not possible again.
It's not as if the team was bad earlier in the year either. Not sure what really has changed all that much. Somebody said something that someone else didn't like and it was last straw? Who knows.
