The Forsling trade is arguably Benning's worst because of what he turned into, the fact that he's exactly what we need now, and the fact that we legitimately received f*** all in return.

Because of that trade, Benning needed a top 4 defenceman and brought in OEL, which lead to the buyout and the loss of additional key assets. And now, we're looking at spending more to get an expensive top 4 defenceman, in a seller's market.

Yes, he was not the player he was today when was traded, nor did anyone expect him to be this damn good. Yes, he was waived by Chicago and every team in the league passed on him. But all they had to do was not make stupid trades for mid 20s depth pieces and gamble with their prospect pool. You make enough of those deals, sooner or later you're going to get burned.

we could have claimed him

Forsling was on waivers

This increases the Canucks cap space to 1.2m and over 2m on days they send Bains down. Curious if hey send Bains down tomorrow or Monday since Abbotsford Canucks are also in California.

Seems like poor asset management. Couldn't just send down Bains instead? I guess they don't want him anymore and just really want a contract slot

If Studnicka got a 6th, Aman couldn't get one from like Col/NYI or someone?

If a C gets injured, their only viable option with NHL games is Raty now. Also means 1 of Bains or Sprong (or Hoglander?) becomes the healthy scratch now.
(I'm assuming Aman doesn't clear)

There goes the best looking player in the league.
A woman was moved to take a sign to an Abbotsford game a year ago proclaiming that Bains was "hot" so I guess that management decided that they could risk losing Aman and not be worried that the team's looks were going to fall below acceptable NHL standards.

Bains has essentially replaced him as the 13th forward for Tocchet.

Would be a nice add for Abby but won't miss him on the Canucks.

(Not that I disliked him in his role as a 13th forward)

That’s not even what made the trade bad for me. This was the 99.9999 percentile of bad results when trading away Forsling. His value probably around 2nd or 3rd at the time. The trade was bad because Clendening should have had absolute no value. He was having a down year in the AHL and was running out of waiver ineligibility. Prospects running out of or are eligiable should just not have value. Look what we traded for Kravstov. But that management team overpaid for these types of players multiple times with Vey, Baertshi, Clandening, etc. Even not using hindsight, Forsling was a 5th round pick but was trending upward. I’d put his value at around a 2nd or 3rd at the time.
Timing is a funny thing and COS trades are risky. FWIW Clendenning was in the middle of his 3rd pro season after signing his ELD at 19. he had another 1.5 years of waiver exemption. Obviously it was a bad target, as an undersized defender, his skating never improved and he just didn't have the processing power or size to compensate. But at the time it wasn't a totally re+arded gamble. Clendenning absolutely lit up the AHL as a rookie in his D+2 season and then again the following season. we traded for him after he failed to crack the hawks 2015 roster and had a shitty start to his AHL season when he lost his job as ppQB1 to TJ Brennan. Forsling wasn't setting the SHL on fire when we traded him (D Petey had similar # in his d+1 season at the same level). I bet the Hawks liked him at the WJC in 14/15 (where he was great), knew Clendenning's skating wasn't improving at a rate that gave him a fighting chance at the next level and were willing to roll the dice that Forsling was a better long term bet. It then took Forsling a longgggg time to develop into what he is now, after he was a waiver claim in his D+6 season and literally nobody saw it coming. It would be like Eric Brannstrom developing into a high level 1st pairing anchor....from here.

Alternatively. It's very good cap management. This creates the most amount of cap space while also allowing them to accrue even more on off-days.

The team is on pace for 99 points despite an 11 million dollar black hole, one of their top 4 dmen playing like Jack Johnson (Soucy), one of their goalies having a sub 80 save percentage, and a vezina caliber goalie out of the lineup.

People need to take a breath before claiming contender/non-contender status. The 2011 team beat 1 playoff team in their first 20 games, and were 5-3-2 and 10-7-3 after their first 10 and 20 games, respectively. Prior to last year, I think you need to go back to the 2003/2004 season to find a good, contending Canucks team that started the year well.

I get there's a lot of angst in these parts, as the majority of this forum weren't registered here the last time the team had legitimate expectations. Give it some time for the boys to turn it around and get their act together - when you have new faces you raise the ceiling for what you can be, but it takes a bit of time for the pieces to gel.
