The response all the GMs have got, according to
every insider, is “not now”. It’s a good sign that teams are already putting feelers out. Would like to see a robust market again.
Wonder what Hughes is even asking for, other than a miracle maybe. His team sucks. Matheson is probably the only player worth something. I doubt they would get rid of any of the younger players.

Your Mother's House.
Vancouver has a tendency to slightly underrate its defencemen and overrate its goaltending.

Defencemen leaving Vancouver have faired better on their new teams while the opposite was true for Goalies. OEL better in Florida, Gudbranson better in Pittsburgh, Frosling better in Florida, Schenn better on Preds, Cole better in Utah, Stecher better in Detroit, Hutton better in LA, but Luongo was worse on the Panthers (old), Schneider worse on the Devils, Lack worse on the Devils, Markstrom worse on the Flames.
Schneider was better on the Devils... he deserved a Vezina or two there. Luongo wasn't worse just on a worse team and older... he was amazing in his first FLA run.

It's a weird season so far with teams that might be sellers doing better than expected. I guess the good news is that the Canucks need a L shot D this year which are somewhat easier to come by than R shot.

I'd keep an eye on Sanheim again. I wonder if making a run at Pelech or Pulock would make sense should the Islanders slide in the standings. Might be hard to make salary work for these guys though - Canucks don't have a lot of options to send salary back at this point.

These are all pretty questionable. Stecher and Hutton were overplayed in Vancouver and were due big raises in arbitration based on ice time alone. They've been nothing more than bottom pairing defencemen since.

Schenn and Cole were good here. Gudbranson isn't good anywhere. Forsling was a miss but every other team in the league made the same oversight. OEL is a 4/5 defenceman who was overpaid here.

heck
Who are some 3Cs that might be available, everyone talks about d-men, but I think they'll add a centre.
Obviously way too early to say, but maybe guys like

Laughton
Jake Evans
Bjugstad
Eller
Sissons? (buy low)
Morgan Geekie? (buy low)

Maybe they decide to go the route of a top 6 guy again (Nelson/Granlund), but I think things would have to be looking very good around February for them to go all out for an expensive upcoming UFA again.

Doing my best Vector impression...

- doesn't believe Pettersson is 100%.
- thinks the canucks want Pettersson to get (Elliotte used the words) tougher, meaner, have thicker skin.
- didn't want that message coming from coaches or mgmt, so it's running through Miller and Hughes. Might be what led to the altercation.
- he mentioned how he thought Pettersson listens to what's said about him too much in the media and fans, but said he was told by someone in the know that it goes further then that. There's people in Pettersson's life who are actively sending him links, telling him what they read etc.
- relates a story where he was approached by a different unnamed player in the same situation. Told that player to shut those voices out because the message is always worse then what's actually been said. Gave the player his number and said if I ever say anything you take issue with, call me, we'll sort it. The player has never called. But did say the player approached him later and told him he took Elliotte's advice to shut out the voices and it was the best thing he's ever done.
- spoke about when Pettersson broke into the league as a young kid naive to a lot of those external pressures and how he dominated and played his game. Needs to get back to that player.

Man, Pulock is a really interesting name if the Islanders continue to struggle.
The only issue I see with going after a guy like Pulock is that unless you’re moving Willander the other way, which I’d be hesitant to do, you’re basically blocking his path to a top 4 spot for the foreseeable future. I suppose you could then move Willander in a separate move or just bring him along very slowly.

Personally, I feel the Canucks bigger need going forward is a legitimate top 4 LD that can anchor the 2nd pairing and 1st PK unit. I also feel a LD will be significantly cheaper than a comparable RD allowing us to keep Willander and have a solid top 4 of Hughes/Hronek, New Guy/Willander. A guy like Marcus Pettersson would make a lot of sense.

That was a pretty shocking podcast segment on Pettersson. My takeaways of what they discussed:

1. The organization is not happy with Pettersson's state and are now taking unconventional measures to address it. It's not great that they feel like management, or the coach are no longer appropriate avenues to address whatever is going on.

2. This is the first time we've ever really heard of him having some negative influences from those around him. Putting that out in the public is going to be a positive development—especially when it’s those people around him that are consuming the negativity and feeding it to him?

3. I know he just signed the extension—but this feels an awful lot like a player and team that recognizes there needs to be a trade or fresh start for everyone involved. Clock is ticking before that NMC kicks in...

Already several teams that are clearly rebuilding off to slow starts that will likely continue to slide.

SJS, PHI, MTL, CHI to start with likely a handful more in that category within a few weeks.

Wouldn't be shocked if we started seeing some movement before December, but if there isn't, I imagine it will be very shortly after the new year.

So let me understand….

Pettersson isn’t playing well because of what others are saying about him and he’s having a hard time managing this, which then affects his on ice performance?

Elliotte’s thoughts on Pettersson are basically exactly what MS and others were saying in the since locked Pettersson thread.
It’s abundantly clear that this player struggles with confidence / self-worth. He may have a knock or two as well, but anyone arguing that injuries are the primary issue doesn’t understand how mentally challenging it is to try to be in the top 0.001% in the world at something while being a public figure. Dude is playing like he hates it and he’s scared to make a mistake while millions watch him on tv.
